Leaders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s tough being a \u201creasonable\u201d Republican politician today.\u00a0\u00a0They watched the insurrection of January 6th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0They see the current onslaught of Trump posts on \u201cTruth Social\u201d, and the MAGA rallies where he says one outrageous thing after another.\u00a0\u00a0And they shudder at the vision of the Steve\u2019s, Bannon and Miller, \u201cback in the saddle\u201d again, this time without the calming influences of more \u201cmainstream\u201d Republicans or even Generals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandre Auguste Ledru Rollin said it best in the French Revolution of 1848:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There go my people. I must find out where they are going so I can lead them.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republican leaders have a choice.  They can support their political party, and their leader and Presidential candidate, Donald Trump.  Or they can follow their conscience, knowing full well that choice means exile to the Siberia of Liz Cheney and Jeff Flake (remember him?) \u2013 in short, political suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never Say Never<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu is a prime example.  He spent 2023 looking for a Republican candidate to defeat Trump (after he realized he wasn\u2019t the ONE).   Sununu started with his \u201cbuddy\u201d, Chris Christie of New Jersey, an avowed opponent of Trump who made it clear he was a \u201cNever-Trumper\u201d.  But Christie failed to gain political traction pretty much anywhere, and became the \u201cskunk at the picnic\u201d in the Republican Presidential debates (that Trump disrespected so much that he refused to attend).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those debates should have told us something.\u00a0\u00a0Other than Christie, not one other candidate would dare to criticize the twice-impeached, four times indicted ex-President of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0And Christie called them out \u2013 if they refused to criticize the absent front-runner, how could any of them expect to beat him for the nomination.\u00a0\u00a0By the way, Christie was right; no one else called Trump out, and he won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That made Christie radioactive in the Republican Party, and Sununu abandoned him to seek a more winnable choice.  Nikki Haley was his next standard-bearer, and Sununu literally crisscrossed New Hampshire championing her candidacy.  As part of that campaign, Sununu said that Trump should be disqualified because of his actions on January 6th<\/sup>, and also his theft and mishandling of classified documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Trump\u2019s ironfisted control of the MAGA-Republican Party was unshakeable, and Haley\u2019s campaign petered out with an overwhelming loss in her own home state of South Carolina.\u00a0\u00a0This left Sununu with a choice:\u00a0\u00a0support Trump or political Siberia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In from the Cold<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sunday morning Governor Chris Sununu of the \u201cLive Free or Die\u201d state of New Hampshire appeared on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. <\/em>In that interview, <\/em>he spun around so fast, I swear he could see the back of his own head.   He\u2019s now all-in for Donald Trump.  The Governor said that it\u2019s more important to change \u201cculture\u201d, then to elect a President that Sununu still acknowledges shouldn\u2019t be allowed to have the job.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Really, it\u2019s hard to imagine flipping that fast.  But Sununu was honest about why he was doing it.  He erroneously claimed that 51% of Americans support Donald Trump for President.  While that\u2019s not true (Marquette<\/a>), what is true is that near 90% of Republicans will support Trump.  Sununu made the simple political calculation:  no matter what he personally believed (and acknowledges he still does); his party is going another way.  As an old friend of mine used to say:  \u201cYou\u2019re either on the bus, or off the bus\u201d.  Chris Sununu is now on the MAGA-Trump bus, even if he wasn\u2019t a MAGA-Trumper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a difficult interview.  Sununu refused to contradict any of his earlier statements about Trump\u2019s \u201cunfitness\u201d for office.  But he stuck by his \u201cguns\u201d.  Since his Party wanted Trump, he wanted Trump.  Since his Party thought Trump was better than Biden; despite January 6th<\/sup>, despite the classified documents, despite the election interference, despite the four indictments; then Sununu was a \u201cgood soldier\u201d.  He supported Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expediency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When Stephanopoulos \u201cwalked\u201d Sununu through all of the questions, he finally just shook his head.\u00a0\u00a0In this MAGA world, \u201c2+2+2+2\u201d does not equal eight.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It equals zero; zero responsibility for all of those disqualifying actions, actions that Sununu and others, see as a threat to democracy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Bolton, former Ambassador to the United Nations and one of Trump\u2019s National Security Advisors at least was a bit more logical.\u00a0\u00a0He knows Trump, he worked for Trump, he resigned from the Trump Administration.\u00a0\u00a0He is warning the United States that Trump is unfit for office.\u00a0\u00a0But, in the binary choice of the 2024 election, Bolton refuses to choose.\u00a0\u00a0He declares that Biden is \u201cunfit\u201d as well.\u00a0\u00a0So Bolton will \u201cwash his hands\u201d of the whole matter.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019ll likely write in Dick Cheney, again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All because \u201c\u2026there go my people.  I must find out where they are going so I can lead them\u201d.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sununu, Bolton, and the rest all know where the MAGA-Republican Party is going.\u00a0\u00a0And they\u2019re willing to go straight to \u201cHell in a handbasket\u201d with them.\u00a0\u00a0I guess, at least they\u2019ll know someone there when they arrive.
