{"id":7026,"date":"2024-03-24T08:13:47","date_gmt":"2024-03-24T12:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=7026"},"modified":"2024-03-24T08:13:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-24T12:13:49","slug":"a-nation-more-divided","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/03\/24\/a-nation-more-divided\/","title":{"rendered":"A Nation More Divided"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">February, 2017<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It was seven years ago, February of 2017.   Donald Trump had only been President for a month.  And \u00a0I was just beginning my \u201cjourney\u201d into  writing political (and other) essays; trying to explain what I saw as the betrayal of the \u201cAmerican Promise\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0That was one thousand, six hundred and seventy essays ago, about one every other day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0I still don\u2019t think I\u2019ve adequately described the schism that has only grown worse from Trump into the Biden Administration.\u00a0 That&#8217;s  despite the fact  our current President, a politician of the \u201cmiddle\u201d:  is still able to work \u201cacross the aisle\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The problem now, the aisle is more like Trump\u2019s \u201cWall\u201d, and crossing is no longer an act of grace.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s more like an act of betrayal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In one of those early essays, I tried to describe the support for Trump in terms of an old television show,\u00a0<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2017\/02\/28\/trump-world-and-the-beaver\/\">Trump World and the Beaver<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>I explained America\u2019s schism as the future coming too fast, and the desire of some to \u201cgo back\u201d.\u00a0 For those of us who thought the &#8220;future&#8221; looked good; the pain of Hillary\u2019s loss, and the outrage at Trump\u2019s victory, was still fresh.\u00a0\u00a0We were just beginning to find how to \u201cresist\u201d what Trump could do.\u00a0\u00a0I completed that essay with the following paragraph:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>As one of her final acts of the Presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton and her staff wore purple to symbolize a uniting of America.&nbsp;&nbsp;As the \u201cresistance\u201d movement moves forward, we should not be secure in a 2.8 million vote majority.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We need to find ways to assuage the concerns of those who feel left behind by the rapid pace of change.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Colors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Well, that didn\u2019t happen.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s been little \u201cassuaging\u201d in the past seven years, just a deepening of the divide.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s easy now to fall into the argument that, \u201cI\u2019m right, you\u2019re wrong, and that\u2019s it\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But that doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve never convinced someone to change simply by saying \u201cyou\u2019re wrong\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It just sets their position in stone, cemented in by the \u201cfacts\u201d they believe, and inability of either side to see the other \u201cview\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s like arguing about color; if you see purple, and I see blue, no amount of persuasion will change your mind, or mine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And we are now in a black and white world, with little room for shades of gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our National schism is like the Protestants and the Catholics in Northern Ireland. As my mother would say of the Irish flag, \u201cOrange for the Protestants, Green for the Catholics, and White for the peace that shall never come between\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And if that analogy seem extreme, so is our current divide.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origin Story<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019ve said this a lot:&nbsp;&nbsp;we have a Nation with two different sets of facts, even two different histories.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here\u2019s some examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There is a national \u201corigin-story\u201d that the United States was founded by Christian men using Christian doctrine.&nbsp;&nbsp;You hear it often.&nbsp;&nbsp;But the Founding Fathers were much more nuanced than that.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jefferson, the white man (and enslaver) who wrote \u201c\u2026All Men are created equal\u2026endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights\u2026\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;didn\u2019t see the \u201cCreator\u201d in any sort of Christian sense.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was Deist, who saw the Creator as setting the world in motion, then stepping back and letting it move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And the authors of the Constitution were well aware that the colonies were founded in part as a refuge for religious freedom.\u00a0\u00a0The Pilgrims, the Puritans, the Quakers in Pennsylvania, the Catholics in Maryland; all came to escape religious persecution.\u00a0\u00a0It was so important that the First clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution stated:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cCongress shall make no law respecting an establishment religion or the prohibiting the free exercise thereof\u2026\u201d\u00a0\u00a0There was no \u201cexception\u201d for the Christian church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foundation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Even Francis Bellamy, the author of the Pledge of Allegiance and a minster\u2019s son, did NOT include a Creator in his pledge in 1892.&nbsp;&nbsp;It wasn\u2019t until 1954 that \u201cUnder God\u201d was inserted \u2013 to contrast the United States to the \u201cgodless\u201d Communists. But stating those \u201cfacts\u201d of our Founding, is now controversial.&nbsp;&nbsp;Like the origin story of some superhero, the \u201cfacts\u201d get altered to fit a current narrative of Christian Nationalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The revelations of the \u201c1619 Project\u201d weren\u2019t new.\u00a0\u00a0But the <em>New York Times <\/em>essays put the reality of a Nation, founded in part, on enslaved labor, out front.\u00a0\u00a0Those facts flew in the face of the \u201corigin story\u201d the Americans learned from textbooks that, up until the 1970\u2019s, mentioned only Harriet Tubman, Booker T Washington and George Washington Carver as \u201csignificant\u201d people of color.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0But instead of recognizing our \u201creal\u201d history, many states, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/download?key=18953&amp;format=pdf\">including Ohio<\/a>, moved to \u201cstrike\u201d the 1619 project.\u00a0\u00a0It raised far too many questions, altered too many perspectives.\u00a0\u00a0It was too \u201cdangerous\u201d to talk about in public schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Only the Choir<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the most recent example, and the most polarizing event, was the American response to the Covid 19 pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0What should have been a simple, unanimous scientific response, devolved into a wildly divisive political issue.\u00a0\u00a0Somehow, masks and vaccinations became \u201cDemocrat\u201d, and anti-vaxx, anti-mask became &#8220;MAGA-Republican&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0How did we allow a national emergency, something that should have bound us together in common interest, to become the most divisive issue of our time?\u00a0\u00a0And how many needlessly died because of our divided response?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When I started writing these essays, I believed that somehow I could, in a small way, reach across the barrier.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now, I know that\u2019s not possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;All I can do is \u201cpreach\u201d to the choir.&nbsp;&nbsp;There\u2019s not many others in the \u201ccongregation\u201d, left open to the message, or conversion.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are a Nation going forward, divided, with a large minority who will, (to paraphrase&nbsp;<em>Hamilton, The Musical<\/em>), never be satisfied.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February, 2017 It was seven years ago, February of 2017.
