{"id":6962,"date":"2024-02-28T08:59:29","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T13:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=6962"},"modified":"2024-02-28T08:59:31","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T13:59:31","slug":"my-little-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/02\/28\/my-little-town\/","title":{"rendered":"My Little Town"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Thanks Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel \u2013 for a lifetime of amazing music like&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=__Ro3eGuznI\"><em>My Little Town<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tenure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I live in Pataskala, Ohio, but I am not a native \u201cPataskalan\u201d. I didn\u2019t go to public school here, and my ancestors didn\u2019t own a farm or a store nearby.\u00a0\u00a0Nope, I\u2019m a long-term interloper.\u00a0\u00a0I first arrived when I was twenty-one years old, a fuzzy haired student-teacher from nearby Denison University.\u00a0\u00a0The only thing I knew about Pataskala was that a charity food and clothing center, a place called LEADS, was located here.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s where Denison students donated their clothes and excess dorm room furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, I know that LEADS isn\u2019t even in Pataskala, it\u2019s in Summit Station, an even smaller town nearby.\u00a0\u00a0But, when Pataskala became a city in the 1990\u2019s, Summit was incorporated.\u00a0\u00a0So while LEADS wasn\u2019t in Pataskala then, it is now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I later learned that the high school where I student-taught, and then got my first and only teaching job, served Pataskala, but wasn\u2019t actually in Pataskala. It was in the nearby township of Etna.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Etna itself was a village on State Route 310 between State Route 40 and I-70. It was surrounded by cornfields and cow pastures.\u00a0\u00a0Now, it&#8217;s one \u201cdistribution center\u201d after another, lined up for miles along the National Road and spreading out north and south along the adjoining country lanes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build in America<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I came here in 1978, and except for a brief six-month sojourn to the University of Cincinnati Law School, I\u2019ve stayed.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s forty-six years; watching a farm community turn into a suburb, and now into a mix of industry, housing.  The few remaining farmers are left tilling the land that\u2019s been in their families for a century or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been a teacher, a coach, and the High School Dean of Students.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019ve volunteered with the Scouts, and worked to get school levies passed.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I now substitute at the high school, I\u2019m that old guy who can tell stories about \u201cour\u201d school from nearly a half-century before.&nbsp;&nbsp;But to \u201cnative\u201d Pataskala, I\u2019m still that new guy from Denison over in Granville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of that history is to prepare you for what\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0happening now.\u00a0\u00a0As industry arrives all over;  giant Amazon warehouses and the American Electric Power\u2019s storage and training facility; there\u2019s one business creating a local uproar.\u00a0\u00a0One of the giant buildings  is a company called \u201cI<a href=\"https:\/\/illuminateusa.com\/\">lluminate USA<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s one of the very few US manufacturers of solar panels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Intel\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0giant computer chip facility just a few miles to the North, Illuminate USA is entering a market dominated by foreign manufacturers.\u00a0\u00a0With computer chips, Taiwan makes 60% of the worlds semi-conductors, and 90% of the advanced ones.\u00a0\u00a0The Intel plant is part of the US Plan (Joe Biden\u2019s plan) to bring that critical industry back to the US.\u00a0\u00a078% of world  solar panels are made in China.\u00a0\u00a0So Illuminate USA is also part of the \u201cbuild in America\u201d plan.\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s not just about \u201cjingoism\u201d; the Covid pandemic showed how vulnerable America was to specific international product shortages.\u00a0\u00a0So better to make it here, than depend on getting it from there, wherever there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China, China, China<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US companies are highly invested in China.&nbsp;&nbsp;The computer I\u2019m on right now (Apple MacBook Pro), the phone in my pocket (I-Phone SE), the shirt on my back, all were produced in China or have Chinese parts.&nbsp;&nbsp;And companies like McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and of course, Coca Cola are heavily invested in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Illuminate USA is a United States company, but has connections to China.&nbsp;&nbsp;It makes sense:&nbsp;&nbsp;China makes most of the solar panels in the world, and has manufacturing expertise.&nbsp;&nbsp;Instead of \u201creinventing the wheel\u201d,&nbsp;&nbsp;Illuminate USA is building on Chinese technology to produce solar panels here in Pataskala, Ohio.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s what any reasonable company developing a new industrial process would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are forces in America who are opposed to any connections to China.\u00a0\u00a0They describe it in lurid, 1950\u2019s terms:\u00a0\u00a0Red China, Communist China, \u201cThe Red Menace\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And there\u2019s big money behind them; the conservative think tanks like the Claremont Institute and Center for Strategic International Studies, all sponsored by right-wing billionaires.\u00a0\u00a0And while their pseudo-academic \u201ccredentials\u201d look good, the reality is they are the same right-wing extremists that are polluting much of the American discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red Scare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are good at stirring things up. The &#8220;money&#8221; groups sponsor a local front of \u201cproud Pataskalans\u201d who are \u201cstanding against Communist aggression\u201d here in my little town.\u00a0\u00a0They call themselves \u201cNot In Pataskala\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind, \u201cmy little town\u201d is already \u201cRed\u201d, Republican \u201cRed\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0In 2020 Joe Biden got less than 35% of the vote. But the city leaders, the Mayor and Council members, are \u201cregular Red\u201d Republicans, not necessarily MAGA-REPUBLICANS.\u00a0\u00a0But the \u201cNot in Pataskala\u201d crowd, the \u201ccitizens group\u201d with the expensive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/notinpataskala.com\/\">webpage<\/a>, are going after those leaders, for \u201c&#8230;allowing Communism to creep into our town\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Notably, the Illuminate USA factory building is located on the \u201cRed\u00a0Chip Parkway\u201d, and will be right next door to the land purchased by that \u201cwoke-ist corporation of all\u201d, Microsoft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a long-standing battle in Pataskala.\u00a0\u00a0The transition of the past half-century has been from rural to industrial-suburban.\u00a0\u00a0There are traffic lights and fast food restaurants, bars and housing developments where corn and soybeans used to grow.\u00a0\u00a0The critical issue is summed up in one word:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cchange\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Many Pataskalans, even newcomers who weren&#8217;t here in the &#8220;good old days&#8221;, long for the \u201crural life\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s got nothing to do with \u201cRed Chinese Communism\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local Mayor does his best to sooth fears,\u00a0\u00a0showing up at every public event, and publishing sunset pictures from his front porch.\u00a0\u00a0And the \u201cNot in Pataskala\u201d crowd really ain\u2019t so crowded.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s all just another sign of our polarized society; vulnerable to \u201cRed Scare\u201d tactics that cherry-picks \u201cfacts\u201d to generate fear.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Frankly, most Pataskalans just watch \u201cthe show\u201d; some in support, some in disgust, and some just waiting for the \u201ccar wreck\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s our little town, Pataskala;\u00a0\u00a0a microcosm of America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel \u2013 for a lifetime of amazing music like&nbsp;My Little Town Tenure I live in Pataskala, Ohio, but I am not a native \u201cPataskalan\u201d.
