{"id":6926,"date":"2024-02-03T10:36:33","date_gmt":"2024-02-03T15:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=6926"},"modified":"2024-02-03T10:36:35","modified_gmt":"2024-02-03T15:36:35","slug":"carrier-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2024\/02\/03\/carrier-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Carrier Groups"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">October 7th<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The President of the United States sent two US Navy Carrier Groups into the Middle East after the October 7<sup>th<\/sup> Hamas attack; the\u00a0<em>Dwight D. Eisenhower<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>the Gerald R. Ford<\/em>. Those groups aren\u2019t just the aircraft carriers themselves, the most advanced military \u201chardware\u201d in the world.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s the carrier, then two guided missile cruisers, two anti-aircraft ships, and two anti-submarine ships.\u00a0\u00a0Often there\u2019s an attack submarine trailing the group as well.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s sixteen US Naval vessels in the Middle East total, split between the Mediterranean, and the Persian Gulf.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A carrier group represents the greatest extension of US power short of landing troops on the ground in the region.\u00a0\u00a0And they were put in the area for a single purpose:\u00a0\u00a0to put Iran on notice that the United States would not tolerate their direct involvement against Israeli operations in Gaza fighting Hamas.\u00a0\u00a0Practically, the message was:\u00a0\u00a0Israel will deal with Hamas, and if Iran tries to intervene, they\u2019ll face the full might of the US Navy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Militias<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Iran not only supports Hamas, the terrorist group in Gaza that began this round of Middle East violence with their October 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0attack on Israeli civilians.\u00a0\u00a0Iran also supports \u201cirregular\u201d forces in many Middle East nations, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, the Houthis in Yemen, and multiple groups in Iraq.\u00a0\u00a0All of these \u201cmilitias\u201d are directly supported by the Iranian Republican Guard Qods Force, the \u201ctip of the spear\u201d of Iranian military intervention in other Middle Eastern countries.\u00a0The Qods Force commander,\u00a0Qasem Soleimani, died in a US  drone strike in Iraq  during the Trump Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Those groups give the Iranian government itself \u201cplausible deniability\u201d for their actions.&nbsp;&nbsp;While they may only exist with the support of the Qods Force, Iran claims not to have direct control over them.&nbsp;&nbsp;This way, Iran can deny responsibility for the October 7<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;attacks, even though it\u2019s unrealistic to think Hamas could plan such a dramatic move without Iranian support and consent.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But more importantly, Iran has, at best, turned a \u201cblind eye\u201d towards many of those militia groups attacking US personnel in the region.\u00a0\u00a0For the past several weeks, US forces have engaged in a \u201ctit-for-tat\u201d response, particularly with Houthi attacks on merchant shipping and US forces in the Red Sea leading to the Suez Canal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">US Bases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And there are a number of US bases, with US troops physically there, throughout the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0Some US troops are protecting the oil fields in eastern Syria, some are watching the remains of ISIS in Iraq, and some are \u201cadvising\u201d Jordanian and Iraqi government forces.\u00a0\u00a0 There are US bases in Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.\u00a0\u00a0 30,000 troops are stationed in the region.  And that doesn&#8217;t include the fifteen thousand in the Carrier Groups (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/what-are-us-troops-doing-middle-east-where-are-they-2024-01-30\/#:~:text=While%20the%20number%20is%20far,the%20region%2C%20including%20on%20warships.\">Reuters<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">President Biden made it clear that a direct attack on US Forces would trigger a direct response.\u00a0Last weekend, three American soldiers in their barracks in Jordan died in a drone attack.\u00a0\u00a0Friday the United States launched a massive assault on seven locations in Syria and Iraq, hitting eighty-five separate targets.\u00a0\u00a0US Naval forces participated, and B-1 Bombers stationed in the continental United States as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Notably, there were no direct attacks on Iranian soil.&nbsp;&nbsp;American leaders stated that this was a \u201ccampaign\u201d, not a \u201cone-off\u201d strike.&nbsp;&nbsp;They also noted that they were avoiding direct attacks on Iran, to prevent a further expansion of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simple Message<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s a simple message:\u00a0\u00a0we put the carriers in the region as a warning, and the Iranian \u201cproxies\u201d ignored it.\u00a0\u00a0Yesterday\u2019s attacks were a direct result of their targeting US personnel, the first of many.\u00a0\u00a0The goal is no longer just deterrence; it\u2019s to degrade the ability of\u00a0\u00a0those militia groups to continue their attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s a fine line.\u00a0\u00a0If Iran, using its \u201cproxies\u201d; responds in kind, it\u2019s a further step towards confrontation.\u00a0\u00a0On the other hand, the United States cannot allow direct attacks on US Forces.  Nor can we withdraw and allow Iranian domination of the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And as that goes on,  Israel and the United States are dividing.  Israel seems to be razing Gaza.\u00a0And President Biden  is still committed to a \u201ctwo-state\u201d solution to the Palestinian issue.  Prime Minister Netanyahu opposes that idea.\u00a0\u00a0So, as we are drawn farther into Middle East conflict, our own alliance with Israel is under stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And don\u2019t be surprised when this issue \u201cbleeds\u201d into the American political campaign.\u00a0\u00a0Republicans in the Congress want direct attacks on Iran.\u00a0\u00a0The campaign issue may be:\u00a0\u00a0Republicans want full war in the Middle East, Democrats are trying to \u201chold the line\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It will be interesting to see where the American people stand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 7th The President of the United States sent two US Navy Carrier Groups into the Middle East after the October 7th Hamas attack; the\u00a0Dwight D.
