{"id":6806,"date":"2023-11-30T08:51:46","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T13:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=6806"},"modified":"2023-11-30T08:51:49","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T13:51:49","slug":"business-as-usual","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2023\/11\/30\/business-as-usual\/","title":{"rendered":"Business as Usual"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Model Red<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I live in Ohio, the supposedly \u201cmodel Red\u201d state.\u00a0\u00a0We are Republican.   There&#8217;s a \u201csuper-majority\u201d in the state legislature GOP, and all of the elected state officials are Republican as well.\u00a0\u00a0There&#8217;s a majority of Republicans on the \u201cnon-partisan\u201d State Supreme Court (four to three). That includes the son of the current Republican Governor.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Democratic US Senator Sherrod Brown stands as the sole elected state-wide Democrat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Not surprisingly, in a state that voted 53% for Trump in 2020, the majority of the Congressional seats are held by Republicans.\u00a0\u00a0But in a state where 45% voted for Biden in 2020, only five (33%) of the fifteen Congressional seats are held by Democrats.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the results of extreme Gerrymandering by the Republican legislature, the Republican Governor and the Republican Secretary of State; as ratified by the Republican State Supreme Court.  It\u2019s all in spite of a state Constitutional Amendment, passed in 2018 with 75% approval, restraining the legislature from Gerrymandering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It  Takes Two<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In fact, the Republicans are so \u201cin charge\u201d in Ohio, that the House Republicans (with 66 seats) have split into two factions.\u00a0\u00a0One, the \u201cnormal\u201d Republicans (take over the State Board of Education types), aligned with minority Democrats (all 32 of them, less than 33%) for legislative control. Meanwhile the other \u201ccrazies\u201d faction (anti Trans, DEI, CRT, LGBTQ and other alphabet things) represent a majority of their Party.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There\u2019s an old phrase; \u201cit takes two to tango\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Well, it takes two to check and balance a legislature, and a state executive branch as well.\u00a0\u00a0But Ohio, the \u201cmodel Red\u201d state really is a flawed model of unchecked partisan governance.\u00a0\u00a0Here\u2019s two recent examples.\u00a0\u00a0This month, two exciting state-wide initiatives which passed with 57% majorities.\u00a0\u00a0Issue One, guarantees women the right to determine their own health care, including getting abortions.\u00a0\u00a0It reinstates the \u201crules\u201d of the Roe v Wade US Supreme Court decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Issues, Old Tactics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Immediately after the passage of Issue One, the \u201ccrazies\u201d wing of the Republican Party vowed to maintain Ohio\u2019s strict abortion laws. That included the six-week limit which virtually banned abortions.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cCooler\u201d Republican heads seems to have prevailed. But even they are talking about the need for \u201ccompromise\u201d with the brand-new Constitutional Amendment.\u00a0\u00a0For those who thought that \u201cblack letter law\u201d enshrined in the State Constitution would be the final word, the fight isn\u2019t over.\u00a0\u00a0And with a State Supreme Court that disemboweled the anti-gerrymandering re-districting amendment, nothing in the Constitution may be sacred.\u00a0\u00a0A battle was won on Issue One, but the \u201cwar\u201d for women\u2019s health rights will go on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And Issue Two was the proposed law to legalize recreational marijuana.\u00a0\u00a0Ohio already had a pretty lax \u201cmedical marijuana\u201d law:\u00a0\u00a0for $200 almost anyone could get an online medical marijuana card.\u00a0\u00a0But as of December 7<sup>th<\/sup>, everyone over twenty-one will be allowed to purchase \u201cweed\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The wily Republicans in the legislature probably will \u201caccept\u201d the legalization in the newly passed law.\u00a0\u00a0What they want to control is the immense tax monies to be divided.\u00a0\u00a0Ohioans will get to \u201csmoke-up\u201d.  But where the  tax money goes; regular state sales tax plus a 10% state \u201cfee\u201d; that\u2019s a different matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Show Me the Money<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And those are only two recent examples of Republican legal \u201carrogance\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The former Republican Speaker of the House, Larry Householder, took a $60 MILLION bribe from First Energy Corporation. He made sure the Legislature passed (and the Governor signed) a law guaranteeing billions of state dollars to cover First Energy\u2019s cost of aging Ohio nuclear plants.\u00a0\u00a0Householder is now serving a twenty-year Federal sentence. But multiple other Ohio leaders, implicated in the bribe distribution, have skated free, so far. (The Lieutenant Governor, John Husted, and Governor DeWine were subpoenaed in a civil case).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the \u201ccash cow\u201d of the Ohio Republican Party is education.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the past, even the chief of the National Association of Charter Schools called Ohio the \u201cWild West\u201d of charter schooling (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/metro\/2014\/07\/ohio_is_the_wild_wild_west_of.html\">Cleveland<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The state freely provided money earmarked for public education to private charter schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;The most egregious example was the online program ECOT (Education Center of Tomorrow), which generated huge payouts to its top executives, and misappropriate $117 million of Ohio education money.&nbsp;&nbsp;ECOT went under, and the money was never returned to the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">William Lager, the founder of ECOT, was a heavy contributor to Ohio Republicans with over $800,000 in donations&nbsp;&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/myemail.constantcontact.com\/ECOT-S-WILLIAM-LAGER-IS-AMONG-OHIO-S-BIGGEST-POLITICAL-DONORS.html?soid=1112401452386&amp;aid=JpLBGI_Ii6w\">OCEASF<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And he managed to personally distance himself from the financial collapse, maintaining his fourteen million dollar home in Florida.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help the Rich<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Charter schools are still \u201ca thing\u201d here in Ohio, but the new \u201ccash\u201d is in the nearly unlimited school voucher program.\u00a0\u00a0Republicans supposedly passed\u00a0\u00a0school vouchers as a way for economically disadvantaged kids to escape from \u201cfailing public schools\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The legislature made\u00a0state funded education money \u201cportable\u201d for students.\u00a0\u00a0Want to go to a private (or charter) school?\u00a0\u00a0Just sign up, and over $8000 in state money goes to pay for private education\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news5cleveland.com\/news\/local-news\/investigations\/every-ohio-family-can-now-get-a-private-school-voucher-some-say-it-helps-students-experts-call-it-harmful\">(Cleveland<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But the big \u201creveal\u201d this week, is that the majority of the voucher money isn\u2019t going to economically disadvantaged kids.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, the majority is going to supplement kids already in private schools.\u00a0\u00a0And with the \u201crelaxation\u201d of income restrictions, a large proportion of the almost $1 Billion appropriated for vouchers are going to families with greater than $100,000 annual incomes. (The state government appropriated $12.7 Billion for public K-12 education in 2022, so close to 8% is going to vouchers \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.policymattersohio.org\/files\/assets\/k-12.pdf\">Public Policy<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What was \u201cadvertised\u201d as helping \u201cdisadvantaged kids\u201d is really going to help voters more likely to vote the Republican way, at least as far as the legislature is concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And the majority of private schools are religious.\u00a0\u00a0Of course parents should have the right to send their child to a religious school. But should the State, with public tax money, pay for it?\u00a0\u00a0As long as the private \u201cowners\u201d of the schools donate to Republican candidates, our current \u201cRed Model\u201d thinks Ohio should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here in Ohio it\u2019s all about money \u2013 money into the hands of those who already have it, and money into the hands of Republican politicians.\u00a0\u00a0If this were California, or New York or any other \u201chigh profile\u201d state, it would be a national story.\u00a0\u00a0But here in Ohio, the \u201cmodel Red\u201d state, it\u2019s just business as usual.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Model Red I live in Ohio, the supposedly \u201cmodel Red\u201d state.\u00a0\u00a0We are Republican.
