{"id":6752,"date":"2023-10-31T10:29:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T14:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=6752"},"modified":"2023-10-31T10:29:17","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T14:29:17","slug":"credible-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2023\/10\/31\/credible-sources\/","title":{"rendered":"Credible Sources"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><em>Gaza\u2019s Health Ministry said the death toll among Palestinians has passed 8,000 \u2014 mostly women and minors. It&#8217;s a toll without precedent in decades of Israeli-Palestinian violence, and it is expected to climb even more rapidly as Israel presses its ground offensive. Over 1,400 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during the initial Hamas onslaught (Time, October 29, 2023).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beginnings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There is a war going on in the Middle East.\u00a0\u00a0 A terrorist group launched a surprise attack on Israel on <strong>October 7<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Over a thousand Hamas \u201cfighters\u201d crossed over the Israel\/Gaza border; breaking down the barriers, coming through tunnels, even flying in on ultra-light gliders.\u00a0\u00a0They attacked some military outposts, but most of their effort was targeted to torturing, capturing, and killing civilians.\u00a0\u00a01400 Israelis were killed, some in their beds, some burned to death in their houses, some chased down in the fields and executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Any discussion of what\u2019s happening now in Gaza, needs to start on<strong> October 7<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Palestinians, with good reason, can claim that the Israeli treatment of their people is unacceptable.\u00a0\u00a0Many Israelis, fresh from a summer in the street protesting the Netanyahu government, with good reason, might blame him for their unpreparedness. There are lots of failures leading up to <strong>October 7<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Justice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But nothing justifies the attack on <strong>October 7<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0not the long suffering of the Palestinian people, and not the political mechanizations of Bebe Netanyahu.\u00a0\u00a0Israelis try to explain<strong> October 7<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0with a term Americans (over thirty) understand: <strong>9-11<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps that age limit explains why so many young Americans seem willing to overlook the Hamas atrocities.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>September 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0<\/strong>to them is history; not\u00a0the immediate, visceral loss, that older Americans feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To fall back on <strong>9-11<\/strong> for a moment, let me modify a \u201clecture\u201d from\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=21eaubatLGc\">The West Wing<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>an important television show of the era.\u00a0\u00a0It explained the nature of Al Qaeda.\u00a0\u00a0 US was not attacked by a religion.\u00a0\u00a0Al Qaeda was an extremist terrorist group.\u00a0\u00a0The \u201cequation\u201d read:\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Islamic Extremist is to Islam, what (fill in the blank) is to Christianity&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0The answer was \u2013 the Ku Klux Klan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To the Sea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Israel was attacked by Hamas, a terrorist group founded on the concept of genocide, killing Jews.\u00a0\u00a0Their \u201cbattle cry\u201d, \u201c\u2026Palestinian, from the river to the sea\u201d, is one from the very origin of Israel in 1948.\u00a0\u00a0The Arab goal was to drive the Jews into the sea.\u00a0\u00a0The nation-states surrounding Israel; Jordan, Egypt, Syria, with the support of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and most of the other Islamic states; tried to do just that.\u00a0\u00a0In 1948, 1956, 1967, and 1973; state-sponsored armies tried to drive the Jews from Israel.\u00a0\u00a0They failed each time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Hamas is not a nation, not state-sponsored.\u00a0\u00a0The terrorists don\u2019t have a state-sponsored army prepared to battle at the border or the open plain.\u00a0\u00a0Hamas is a terrorist group, that took on some \u201cstate trappings\u201d in attempting to govern Gaza.\u00a0\u00a0But Hamas never has forgotten its founding principle:\u00a0\u00a0drive the Jews into the sea.\u00a0\u00a0 Hamas is to Palestinian, as the Proud Boys or the Oath Keepers are to Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">False Equivalence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In covering Israel\u2019s response to the Hamas\u2019 attack, the world media has a problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;Reporters have relatively free-rein in Israel, able to move about and interview civilians, victims and the military.&nbsp;&nbsp;While the Israeli government has a strong and even ham-handed propaganda campaign in play, reporters are often able to get past the rhetoric and obfuscation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But reporters don\u2019t have the same free-rein in Gaza.\u00a0\u00a0The Gaza reports often come from the Gaza \u201cgovernment\u201d, but the \u201cgovernment\u201d there is the terrorist group, Hamas.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not \u201cequivalent\u201d coverage. As bad as things are in Gaza, most of the information coming out of Gaza is controlled by Hamas, slanted to their needs, true or not.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If an F-5 tornado ripped through Central Ohio, we would take the information from the Emergency Agencies and the local health departments at face value.\u00a0\u00a0Those agencies are valid, simply getting out the facts.\u00a0\u00a0The same is not true with the disaster agencies of Gaza; they are wings of Hamas, and subject to Hamas\u2019 goals.\u00a0\u00a0Any equivalency is false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hiding Behind Civilians<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When\u00a0<em>Time\u00a0<\/em>or other mainstream new services quote the Gaza Health Ministry, it\u2019s important to remember they are quoting Hamas.\u00a0\u00a0And one more point:\u00a0\u00a0Hamas uses the civilian Palestinian population as their armor, their shield to protect them from Israeli retribution.\u00a0\u00a0Why do Israeli bombings kill Palestinian civilians?\u00a0\u00a0Because Hamas is hidden among, below, and beside them.\u00a0That is Hamas\u2019 choice, and those civilians death are their weapon.\u00a0\u00a0The blood is on their hands as well, not just Israel\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the wars a half century ago, armies marched out to attack, and dug in to defend.\u00a0\u00a0Civilians could escape the battlefield, fleeing before the actual warfare began.\u00a0\u00a0Many Palestinians did exactly that.\u00a0\u00a0But there is nowhere to flee in Gaza, and Hamas is everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0What is Israel supposed to do? Accept <strong>October 7<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>? What was the United States supposed to do after<strong> 9-11<\/strong>?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gaza\u2019s Health Ministry said the death toll among Palestinians has passed 8,000 \u2014 mostly women and minors.
