Last night, Congress passed a “continuing resolution” to fund the government for the next forty-five days. It took the Democrats in both the House and the Senate to get it done. Absent from the resolution is increased funding to Ukraine. Democrats on both sides of the Congress believe they have a deal for that – but Speaker McCarthy seems unable to keep “handshake” deals, and besides, he might not be the Speaker for much longer. More to come…but last week the “charges” against Joe Biden were “obviously” more important to the House Republicans than keeping the government open.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s App<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t spend a whole lot of time watching the \u201cImpeachment Inquiry\u201d in the House of Representatives Thursday, but I did catch the summaries.\u00a0\u00a0There were expert \u201clawyers\u201d brought in by the Republicans, most prominent among them Georgetown Professor Jonathan Turley.\u00a0\u00a0He (and the others) made it clear that there is no evidence showing that President Biden committed a \u201chigh crime or misdemeanor\u201d and should be impeached.\u00a0\u00a0 Surely\u00a0impeachment must require at least some evidence:\u00a0\u00a0none is none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what are the Republican Congressmen so fired up about?\u00a0\u00a0There are a series of text (or What\u2019s App<\/em> \u2013 I thought those disappeared when sent) messages where Hunter Biden, the cocaine-fueled son of the President, seemed to offer influence by \u201cthe big guy\u201d or \u201cmy uncle\u2019s brother\u201d to potential buyers.\u00a0\u00a0Hunter seems to be trying to sell the influence of his father; first the Vice President, or later the former Vice President, or candidate for President.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hunter Biden clearly tried to cash in on his last name.\u00a0\u00a0He wanted to ride the coattails of his powerful father.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s not really a question about that.\u00a0\u00a0Hunter needed cash, and he had the connections to get it.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s unseemly, it\u2019s un-American, and it\u2019s possibly illegal.\u00a0\u00a0That means that Hunter, already indicted for falsification on a gun purchase permit and an admitted tax evader, might be in further legal trouble.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cashing In<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But all of that begs the question:\u00a0\u00a0is Joe Biden, former Senator from Delaware, former Vice President of the United States, and the current President of the United States; involved?\u00a0\u00a0The Republican Congressmen on the House Oversight Committee pointed to Hunter’s messages as some kind of \u201cproof\u201d that the President was participating through his son in selling influence.\u00a0\u00a0At worst, maybe the President himself took bribes.\u00a0\u00a0Why would Hunter obliquely mention his father in the messages if it wasn\u2019t so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, Hunter might do that so he could cash in.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s look at some other similar activities in recent history.\u00a0\u00a0In 2017, Michael Cohen, the former attorney for Donald Trump, was literally \u201cselling\u201d his access to the new President on the open market.\u00a0\u00a0Rudy Giuliani did much the same thing.\u00a0\u00a0And the Trump businesses were booming \u2013 particularly the Old Post Office Hotel in Washington, DC.\u00a0\u00a0Nations looking to gain some influence with the Trump family spent millions of dollars on rooms and amenities, on golf courses and dinners.\u00a0\u00a0They were trying to \u201cpurchase\u201d an \u201cin\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Jared Kushner gained millions in investments from Arab royalty, while serving as a senior advisor to President Trump.  As he negotiated the \u201cAbrahamic Accord\u201d at the end of the administration, he was also making sure his loans on New York City properties were covered, by some of the same governments he was dealing with for Middle-East peace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s all ugly.  But it\u2019s also, mostly, legal (Kushner may well have crossed some lines).  But Jared, or Don Junior, or Michael, or even Rudy trying to \u201cpeddle\u201d influence, doesn\u2019t constitute a crime by the twice impeached, four times indicted, former President of the United States.  If it\u2019s a crime, it\u2019s a crime for those others.  And every Republican on the Oversight Committee would \u201cfight to the death\u201d to keep Mr. Trump clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust an Addict?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hunter was\u00a0\u00a0addicted to cocaine.\u00a0\u00a0He was so screwed up, he gave his laptop, likely with self-incriminating information and certainly near-pornographic selfies(that Marjorie Taylor Greene gleefully showed the Nation); to a blind computer repairman who wore a tam-o-shanter (you can’t make that up).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hunter was hard up for cash \u2013 a cocaine habit will do that to you.\u00a0\u00a0He was also an experienced lawyer, with a Georgetown undergrad and a Yale Law School degree.\u00a0\u00a0And he had a famous and saleable last name.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it shouldn\u2019t be a surprise that he used that name to get cash.\u00a0\u00a0People on drugs steal things from their families all the time.\u00a0\u00a0One of the \u201cclues\u201d of a kid\u2019s drug use, is all of a sudden money and valuables come up missing.\u00a0\u00a0Is it the parents’ fault that their child steals money out of a wallet and buys drugs?\u00a0\u00a0Of course not.\u00a0\u00a0The toughest part for parents of kids with drug problems, is their absolute loss of trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hunter had something to steal, the appearance that he could get his powerful father to do something.\u00a0\u00a0He certainly wasn\u2019t going to send \u201cWhat\u2019s App<\/em>\u201d messages saying he\u00a0might<\/u><\/em>\u00a0be able to influence his father.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s not saleable.\u00a0\u00a0What was a \u201creal product\u201d for him to sell was the absolute assurance that his father was \u201con board\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$200 stolen from Dad\u2019s wallet is not evidence that Dad was paying for drugs.\u00a0\u00a0The messages that Hunter sent is not evidence that Joe Biden was selling influence.\u00a0\u00a0It is evidence that Hunter was trying to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
