The 274 in Noble County would hold a \u201cveto power\u201d over the entire state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One Person, One Vote<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Now that Issue One has failed (it gained 67% of the vote in Noble County, but only 25% in Franklin County), some Republicans are trying to create another \u201cwedge issue\u201d to divide Ohioans. Social Media echoes with the claim: those \u201cBlue cities\u201d have forced their will onto the rest of \u201cgood\u201d Ohioans, again. 66 \u201cgood\u201d Ohio counties voted in favor of Issue One, \u201conly\u201d 22 voted against it \u2013 but it still failed (by 57%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 1960\u2019s, the US Supreme Court in a series of cases (Baker v Carr, Wesberry v Sanders, Reynolds v Sims<\/em>) said that States must have voting districts of equal population.\u00a0\u00a0Ohio and California are widely different in size, but under the US Constitution, they each still have two Senators.\u00a0\u00a0But Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) and Noble County (Caldwell) MUST have representation based on population.\u00a0\u00a0Out of these cases came the legal axiom that each voter should have the same weight as any other voter: \u201cone person, one vote\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Urban and rural are widely divided here in Ohio. It\u2019s not just along racial lines, it\u2019s also religious, economic, and cultural. But it\u2019s not as stark as you might think. Listen to the music in the parking lot of the local high schools. It\u2019s hip hop and pop, from urban Columbus to suburban Pataskala to rural Archbold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n But to \u201cgin up\u201d the vote, politicians use the divide as a wedge.\u00a0\u00a0They tell their rural base that cities (with all the racial overtones) forced their will on the state.\u00a0\u00a0The reality is if you take the three biggest urban counties out of the August count Issue One count (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati), it still fails.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a national issue, highlighted by the electoral college.\u00a0\u00a0When you look at the political voting \u201cmaps\u201d, the Red\/Blue look at the nation, we are a Red country with blue edges and a few splotches in the middle.\u00a0\u00a0But when we look at the population maps, we are really bluer than red.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nWedge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
