{"id":6334,"date":"2023-05-10T08:56:03","date_gmt":"2023-05-10T12:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=6334"},"modified":"2023-07-13T11:25:02","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T15:25:02","slug":"deaf-ears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2023\/05\/10\/deaf-ears\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaf Ears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Verdict In<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday,&nbsp;&nbsp;a civil jury of nine citizens (six men, three women) unanimously found that Donald Trump, the defeated and twice impeached former President of the United States, sexually attacked E Jean Carroll. That jury awarded almost $5 million in damages to Ms. Carroll for a 1996 assault in a department store dressing room in New York City.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t worry though &#8211; the leading Republican candidate for the 2024 nomination already has an answer.\u00a0\u00a0He doesn\u2019t even know who Carroll was or is. And, of course, it\u2019s all just a part of the \u201cWitch Hunt\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Besides, as the trial reminded us, Trump thinks; \u201cif you\u2019re a star you can do anything\u2026you can grab them by\u2026(you know the rest)\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Really &#8211; no one is surprised that Trump is a sexual predator.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even his supporters swallowed that fact whole, way back in 2016.&nbsp;&nbsp;In our era of polarization, saying the \u201ctruth out loud\u201d doesn\u2019t change much.&nbsp;&nbsp;Either you see the \u201cEmperor\u201d naked &#8211; or you don\u2019t.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And the MAGA world will dress him in victim\u2019s robes.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to them, the New York verdict is just another in the long line of unfair attacks, another spear in the side of their martyr.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Only Stronger<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s more to come.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s criminally indicted for corrupt business practices in the same Manhattan Court House. And then there\u2019s the Atlanta election interference cases, and the looming flurry of Federal cases. Two different groups are already convicted of conspiracy to commit insurrection on January 6<sup>th<\/sup>. It\u2019s not a \u201cbridge too far\u201d to see Trump as the top of that conspiracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in the end, the MAGA world will continue to support Donald Trump.\u00a0\u00a0The charges, the trials, and the ultimate convictions will, to abuse a Star Wars quote, \u201cOnly make Him stronger\u201d in the eyes of his followers.\u00a0\u00a0If this sounds more like a cult than a political movement, well there we are.\u00a0\u00a0Our Nation is so divided, that even the Courts no longer have validity.\u00a0\u00a0And that\u2019s not just on the MAGA side of the ledger.\u00a0\u00a0Ask \u201cmy friends\u201d how they feel about the Supreme Court, and particularly the Thomas-Gorsuch-Kavanaugh triumvirate of potential corruption.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s both sides now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2024<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What does all of this say about the 2024 election?&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s very possible that the Republican Party will ride the \u201cTrump Train\u201d to its ultimate doom.&nbsp;&nbsp;Almost no one currently in power in the Party, will stand against him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sure Mitt Romney, John Kasich, Liz Cheney, Larry Hogan and a few others are standing \u201cfor good\u201d, waiting for their Party to come to its senses.&nbsp;&nbsp;But that\u2019s not likely to happen, and so far, they remain in painful isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing against this existential threat to our Democracy, is eighty-one year old Joe Biden.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s achieved a lot as President, but failed at the most important goal.  That goal is the one he established as the measurement of his Presidency.\u00a0\u00a0He has been unable to return our Nation to \u201cnormalcy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0While the \u201cold men\u201d of the current administration, Biden and Merrick Garland, try to make things like \u201cthey should be\u201d, like they were two decades ago; it isn\u2019t working.\u00a0\u00a0And many fear that their commitment to \u201cnormalcy\u201d is dooming us to more MAGA cult craziness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for those of us on the Democratic side who see less MAGA-ism; fewer Trump flags on the porches or Trump craziness on the internet:\u00a0\u00a0MAGA isn\u2019t gone.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s simply moved out of your \u201cinformation space\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Just because it no longer is in your face, isn\u2019t proof that it\u2019s \u201cover\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Friends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s been made very clear to me in the past couple of weeks.\u00a0\u00a0Here\u2019s a story of two friends.\u00a0\u00a0One friend was at the height of his career, a coach in a powerful track program.\u00a0\u00a0Inexplicably, he quit and went to work at a much lower level.\u00a0\u00a0I ran into him and he told me the story.\u00a0\u00a0There were several reasons, but the real answer was, he couldn\u2019t stand the \u201cpolitics\u201d of his fellow coaches.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019d rather leave than be exposed to their rhetoric.\u00a0\u00a0It doesn\u2019t even matter which \u201cside\u201d he was on, he symbolizes what\u2019s happening in America.\u00a0\u00a0The political rhetoric is so toxic, that it poisons the atmosphere of things that have nothing to do with Trump or Biden, like coaching track in high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another friend works in a world where Trump is rationalized.&nbsp;&nbsp;His coworkers accept the \u201cimperfect vessel\u201d theory of Trumpism.&nbsp;&nbsp;Biden is the \u201cexistential threat\u201d to them; not because of his age, but because of the policies he advocates.&nbsp;&nbsp;They view Biden\u2019s plans as so dangerous, they are willing to accept a known liar, cheater, sexual predator, and incompetent as President.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s not that they are \u201cfooled\u201d by Trump, they just consider him a \u201creasonable alternative\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And my friend is concerned that those \u201crationalists\u201d will win the day in 2024, electing a man who cares little for Democracy, or the Constitution, or American traditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom Line<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s at stake in 2024 seems clear:&nbsp;&nbsp;the very survival of the American experiment.&nbsp;&nbsp;We \u201cstressed tested\u201d it from 2016 to 2020, and ultimately, millions of Americans paid the price with their lives for Donald Trump\u2019s incompetence.&nbsp;&nbsp;That Covid became a political litmus test instead of a national health crisis marks the true definition of America\u2019s political insanity.&nbsp;&nbsp;And that\u2019s not even \u201cover\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;More than 1000 Americans are still dying a week (<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklydeaths_select_00\">CDC<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;But our politics are so much more important, we don\u2019t even talk about that now.&nbsp;&nbsp;The testing kits are stored on the bathroom shelves, the masks dusty on the top of the grandfather clock.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Supreme Court Justices are corrupt, Congressmen are on trial, kids are being shot in schools and at the Mall, and a failed President still supports those who attacked the Capitol and the Constitution.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words \u201cexistential threat\u201d are extreme,&nbsp;&nbsp;and reality.&nbsp;&nbsp;What happens in the next year, in the battle between two \u201cimperfect vessels\u201d of Biden and Trump, will determine the course of America.&nbsp;&nbsp;We thought it was over in 2020, when all the cars pulled into the Drive-In and Biden gave his victory speech to flashing lights and beeping horns.&nbsp;&nbsp;But MAGA-ism is still \u201cstrong among us\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;We have to do it all over again.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To quote Ben Bradlee from the movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FEdL1_zOyz4\">All the President\u2019s Men<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Rest up, fifteen minutes, then get you asses back in gear.\u00a0\u00a0Nothing\u2019s riding on this except the First Amendment to the Constitution, freedom of the press and perhaps the future of the country<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the future of the country that should worry us all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Verdict In Yesterday,&nbsp;&nbsp;a civil jury of nine citizens (six men, three women) unanimously found that Donald Trump, the defeated and twice impeached former President of the United States, sexually attacked E Jean Carroll.
