Common Courtesy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We all know one thing for sure.  We aren\u2019t going to live forever.  No one has to go into great detail about that, it\u2019s just a fact of life.  We know it from \u201canecdotal evidence\u201d.   When you get to my \u201cgreat age\u201d of sixty-six, you have a whole list of folks you knew (and loved) who no longer are with us.  And we also understand the correlation between old-age and death.  The older you get, the closer you are to dying.  It\u2019s what it is; dwell on it and get depressed, or accept it and, as the Tim McGraw song goes, \u201cLive like you were dying<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 But, at least here in America, it\u2019s not considered polite to talk about other folk\u2019s impending death.  Even in politics, where, like a knife fight, there are no rules (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid<\/a>); you still don\u2019t talk about someone dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lack of Oxygen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unless, of course, you\u2019re Nikki Haley, former Governor of South Carolina and United Nations Ambassador, running for the Republican nomination for President in 2024.  The problem Haley has, is that all \u201cof the oxygen\u201d is gone in the Republican race.  First there\u2019s Trump:  on civil trial for rape, indicted for business fraud (both in New York); awaiting indictment in Georgia for election interference; and facing Federal charges for stealing classified documents and fomenting an Insurrection.  Talk about a lack of oxygen, all of that turmoil sucks the media coverage completely dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there\u2019s the quixotic DeSantis campaign.  The Governor of Florida can\u2019t travel to Fort Lauderdale to view the flooding, but he can fly to Israel on an \u201ceconomic excursion\u201d.  And speaking of economics, DeSantis is attacking the biggest economic force in Florida, Disney Corporation.  So we get the \u201cside-show\u201d of DeSantis versus Mickey Mouse, which makes the Governor look more and more like Mickey\u2019s friend \u2013 Goofy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is so little \u201coxygen\u201d left, that Haley can barely light a match, much less light her campaign \u201con fire\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0What\u2019s the phrase, \u201c\u2026desperate times require desperate measures\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0And there is nothing more desperate than a Presidential campaign ignored.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not just media, it\u2019s the money that media coverage generates.\u00a0\u00a0Haley can\u2019t raise cash, and that\u2019s a death sentence for a political campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do the Math<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a Fox News interview, Haley said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think that we can all be very clear and say with a matter of fact that if you vote for Joe Biden, you really are counting on a President Harris, because the idea that he would make it until 86 years old is not something that I think is likely.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we Nikki?\u00a0\u00a0Is it really so clear that if you reach 80, it isn\u2019t likely you\u2019ll reach 86?\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s look at the facts.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0Social Security Administration<\/a>\u00a0is in the business of estimating life expectancies.\u00a0\u00a0They have a whole country, and almost ninety years of data, to get a clear estimate of the life expectancy of eighty year-olds.\u00a0\u00a0And here it is:\u00a0\u00a0while the life expectancy of a newborn male in 2023 is a little over 74 years, the life expectancy of an 80 year-old male in 2023 is\u20267.74 years.\u00a0\u00a0The life expectancy of an 81 year old male is 7.25 years.\u00a0\u00a0Simple addition shows that Joe Biden, on average, can expect to live until he\u2019s at least 87 \u2013 after a second term of his Presidency is over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goofy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So, Governor-Ambassador Haley; as a matter of fact we can estimate that Joe Biden will outlive his Presidency.  That\u2019s clear.  But what\u2019s also clear is the desperation your ill-fated campaign for the Presidency must feel.  This is not a slip, a mistake.  You made a clear strategy choice, trying to \u201cCall a spade a spade\u201d. The problem is, that the \u201cspade\u201d you called was actually a \u201cheart\u201d.  It was a dumb move, and it made you and your campaign look impolite, socially inept, and willing to \u201clight your hair on fire\u201d to get attention.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there really is so little oxygen left on the Republican side of the campaign, that your hair didn\u2019t light.\u00a0\u00a0So, like Governor DeSantis, you just look a little,\u201cGoofy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way, the same actuarial table says that a 66 year old man faces a life expectancy of a little over sixteen years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Thinking back, I realize how quickly sixteen years goes by.\u00a0\u00a0Not just the first sixteen, birth to driver\u2019s license, but the middle sixteens, like thirty to forty-six or fifty until now.\u00a0\u00a0I better get going \u2013 and \u201cstart living like I\u2019m dying\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
