{"id":6140,"date":"2023-02-16T09:52:48","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T14:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=6140"},"modified":"2023-07-13T11:24:46","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T15:24:46","slug":"on-the-hook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2023\/02\/16\/on-the-hook\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Hook"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unpronounceable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The good citizens of East Palestine, Ohio, aren\u2019t stupid.&nbsp;&nbsp;(That\u2019s \u201cPal-es-teen\u201d, not \u201cPal-es-tyne\u201d; welcome to Ohio, also the home of Versailles \u2013&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cVer-sails\u201d, Russia \u2013 \u201cRu-see-ah\u201d, Lima- \u201cLie-ma\u201d and the unpronounceable Gnadenhutten).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Norfolk and Southern train of 150 cars, travelling from Madison, Illinois, crashed in their small town after an axle broke on a single car.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The resulting destruction was \u201cepic\u201d; train cars spilled like toys around the crash site, with fierce fires breaking out around several.&nbsp;&nbsp;That was the bad news.&nbsp;&nbsp;The worst news was that at least twenty of those tankers were carrying extremely hazardous chemicals with names as unpronounceable as Ohio\u2019s towns:&nbsp;&nbsp;Vinyl chloride, Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate, isobutylene, and butyl acrylate (<a href=\"https:\/\/response.epa.gov\/sites\/15933\/files\/Norfolk%20Southern%20East%20Palestine%20Train%20Derailment%20General%20Notice%20Letter%202.10.2023.pdf\">EPA<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bad Choices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The hazmat\/fire crews faced a dilemma.&nbsp;&nbsp;The tanker cars were surrounded by flames.&nbsp;&nbsp;The chemicals in the tanks were heating up, with pressure already escaping from relief valves.&nbsp;&nbsp;If they left the chemicals in the tanks, they risked uncontrolled explosions, blowing the raw chemicals into the atmosphere and onto the surrounding community.&nbsp;&nbsp;So they chose to drain out the chemicals into open ditches, then intentionally set the deadly materials on fire.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The column of black smoke was huge, ugly, and vulnerable to the wind.&nbsp;&nbsp;Much of the surrounding area was evacuated.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even partially combusted the chemicals still presented hazards to humans, animals, and ground water. And then there was the unburned chemicals that leeched into the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alphabet Soup<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, two weeks later, all of the authorities:&nbsp;&nbsp;the Federal EPA, the Ohio EPA, Governor Mike DeWine, the Columbiana County Health Department (and, of course, the Norfolk and Southern Railroad); are telling the citizens of East Palestine that the danger is passed, and they can return to their homes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Except, folks are getting sore throats and coughs.&nbsp;&nbsp;And there\u2019s a big fish kill on the bordering Ohio River.&nbsp;&nbsp;And some folks who had to leave their chickens returned to find them dead. Pets are getting sick.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Governor DeWine says it\u2019s OK to come home and breath the air.&nbsp;&nbsp;His suggestion \u2013 maybe stick to bottled-water for a while, until the final testing of the deep wells that provide the local water service.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But he assured them he\u2019d bring HIS family home. (But if East Palestine residents want to stay in hotels away from town, Norfolk and Southern will foot-the-bill). And what of the cities downstream, who draw their water from the Ohio River, like Wheeling, Marietta, and ultimately Cincinnati?&nbsp;&nbsp;Well, they\u2019ll just have to keep monitoring.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All of the authorities seem reasonably sure it\u2019s OK.&nbsp;&nbsp;Just ignore the upside down fish floating downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nothing to See<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The East Palestine Local School District is back open for business.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Ohio EPA tested the air inside over 400 homes and found the chemical residue levels \u201cacceptable\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;And while there\u2019s going to be long-term air, soil and water monitoring in the area; as Obi Wan Kenobi famously said, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing to see here, move along, move along\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Folks who live in Eastern Ohio \u201cain\u2019t fancy\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s a tough, working crowd; from the old steel mill, coal mining and river barging days.&nbsp;&nbsp;They want to go home and return to their \u201cnormal\u201d lives, but they also know that it\u2019s in everybody else\u2019s interest:&nbsp;&nbsp;the Governor, the EPA, and most importantly, the Norfolk and Southern; for this crisis to be over.&nbsp;&nbsp;And they are worried that in the hurry to get out of town, those \u201cofficials\u201d are leaving more than&nbsp;&nbsp;just a mess.&nbsp;&nbsp;The good citizens of East Palestine will have to live in it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t blame them.&nbsp;&nbsp;Until all of those business and government folks are willing to stand in East Palestine and take a \u201cdeep breath\u201d, then a \u201cdeep swig\u201d of local water, and maybe live in town for a while \u2013 they shouldn\u2019t get off the hook.&nbsp;&nbsp;The residents of East Palestine are left taking the risks, and perhaps paying the ultimate price.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unpronounceable The good citizens of East Palestine, Ohio, aren\u2019t stupid.&nbsp;&nbsp;(That\u2019s \u201cPal-es-teen\u201d, not \u201cPal-es-tyne\u201d; welcome to Ohio, also the home of Versailles \u2013&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cVer-sails\u201d, Russia \u2013 \u201cRu-see-ah\u201d, Lima- \u201cLie-ma\u201d and the unpronounceable Gnadenhutten).&nbsp;&nbsp; A Norfolk and Southern train of 150 cars, travelling from Madison, Illinois, crashed in their small town after an axle broke on a single &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2023\/02\/16\/on-the-hook\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;On the Hook&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6140","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
