Quora<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I belong to an online \u201cdiscussion board\u201d called\u00a0Quora<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a place where you can discuss any subject, from the Civil War to Track and Field training. Ask a question, and get a whole series of answers.\u00a0\u00a0Some of the \u201canswerers\u201d are really experts in their field (and some are full-blown idiots).\u00a0\u00a0If you\u2019re \u201cinto\u201d advanced aircraft, you might end up in a conversation with someone who flew the SR-71 Blackbird (my favorite). Or, if you\u2019re looking for defenders of the Southern Cause in the Civil War you can find them. They are still here, declaiming the \u201cWar of Northern Aggression\u201d, and defending Lee at Gettysburg- it was all Longstreet’s fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, there is topic after topic about politics.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For my \u201cprogressive\u201d friends, you can find companionship, or find that the QAnon crazies are still out there.\u00a0\u00a0If you want to find \u201calternative\u201d views to the US support of Ukraine, Quora has that too.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s an international board, and Russians make sure they get their point out.\u00a0\u00a0If you believe them, the Ukrainians are at fault for their civilian power grid destroyed.\u00a0\u00a0Oh, and yes Russia is \u201cwinning\u201d the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Into the Fray<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I actually answer some, usually sticking to educational questions about the structure of the American government.\u00a0\u00a0The Electoral College, the Filibuster, and the Federal versus State balance are constant areas of inquiry.\u00a0\u00a0Sometimes it\u2019s clear that someone from outside the US is asking. And sometimes it\u2019s clear that a US high school student is trying to find someone to do their homework.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t usually chime in on the most political stuff (surprise), just because there are plenty of others waiting to swoop into all sides of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I was reading a topic board called \u201cNo More Trump\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a \u201cTrump bashing\u201d group, but there\u2019s always someone jumping into to defend the disgraced, twice impeached ex-President.\u00a0\u00a0And it leads to a couple of questions.\u00a0\u00a0How,\u00a0after January 6th<\/sup>, the Committee report, the various Court decisions, and the Mara Lago security violations; are articulate, clearly intelligent people still defending him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angle-Side-Side<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t pay much attention in tenth grade Geometry class.  Our teacher, successful basketball coach Mr. Rex Parker<\/a>, trudged through the understandably tough task of teaching fifteen and sixteen year old\u2019s mathematical logic.  My mind held greater fascination to the fact he constantly licked his finger, ran it through the chalk tray at the bottom of the board, then licked the chalk dust off.  I guess he didn\u2019t have acid-reflux, his entire digestive tract must be covered in white dust.   At least, that\u2019s what I was thinking instead of learning theorems, postulates, and equations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I did manage to get one concept.  There are certain \u201cgivens\u201d to solving a problem that take you to an answer.  For example, given a four sided object with equal sides, if two angles are ninety-degree, then all the angles are ninety-degree.  It\u2019s a square. (here endeth my feeble attempt to teach geometry- hope I was right).  It\u2019s the concept of what\u2019s given that determines the answer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of that, to get to this point \u2013 whatever you accept as a \u201cgiven\u201d will determine what shape you will see.\u00a0There are incredibly intelligent, insightful people on \u201cboth sides\u201d of the great American political crisis.\u00a0\u00a0The difference isn\u2019t necessarily their logical thought progression, it\u2019s what they accept as the \u201cgivens\u201d in their political thought.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For example, if you accept as given that the main sources of news are intentionally not telling the truth, and that “woke” Americans are intentionally denying the white-Anglo-Saxon-Christian foundation of\u00a0\u00a0US government; then what conclusions do you reach \u2013 in a logical progression?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Givens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since the media is completely useless, you will need to find \u201calternative\u201d facts.\u00a0\u00a0To do that, you will have to look at those online sources that have the \u201ctruth\u201d, at least, the \u201ctruth\u201d that matches your \u201cgivens\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And once you are armed with those \u201ctruths\u201d, you can logically move ahead to whatever conclusions make \u201csense\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s no good arguing that those folks are unintelligent \u2013\u00a0\u00a0they are making a choice about their \u201cgivens\u201d that wall off logical argument against their conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because if you argue that \u201cthe news says\u201d, well that\u2019s a news that is \u201ca priori\u201d false.\u00a0\u00a0And if you argue that the United States is, in some part, founded on the financial success of enslavement, the original sin of America, then you are \u201cwoke\u201d; an \u201ca priori\u201d falsehood.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the frustration in arguing about all of this.\u00a0\u00a0America no longer has a single set of \u201cgivens\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And even the most intelligent, even the geniuses (yep, I\u2019m referring to Elon Musk) can make a decision to accept givens that set their logical conclusions on a whole different path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holiday Math<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sure, there\u2019s something very \u201cAmerican\u201d about thinking \u201coutside the box\u201d.  But what, just a few short years ago, was a holiday season where folks could exchange views on all sorts of subjects, now is a carefully choregraphed \u201cdiscussion\u201d of professional sports (GOALLLLLLLL!!!- wait, not soccer) and the accomplishments of tenth month old\u2019s.  And, of course, what\u2019s happening with the weather.  But, beware, talking about the blizzard and sub-zero windchills can easily slip into climate change, where the \u201cgivens\u201d are wildly scattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How \u2018bout them Bengals?\u00a0 Leave the Browns out \u2013 might end up arguing about the sexual behavior responsibilities of the NFL and multi-million dollar quarterbacks. Want a political discussion?\u00a0\u00a0Better find a corner to have a\u00a0\u00a0\u201chushed conversation , after carefully \u201cfeeling out\u201d the given \u201cgivens\u201d of the participants.\u00a0\u00a0America, even a Hannukah, Christmas and Kwanza America, can\u2019t discuss anymore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
