{"id":6024,"date":"2022-12-22T09:05:41","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T14:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=6024"},"modified":"2023-07-13T11:24:35","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T15:24:35","slug":"a-cork-in-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2022\/12\/22\/a-cork-in-it\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cork In It"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Golden Door<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are thousands of migrants, from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and other countries; waiting in Mexico directly outside the United States.\u00a0\u00a0They are waiting to cross to make their claim for asylum.\u00a0\u00a0They are not US citizens, but they do have \u201crights\u201d. One of those rights, confirmed both in US law and international treaties, is to enter to claim asylum.\u00a0\u00a0Whether US Immigration Courts accept those claims or not isn\u2019t really the issue.\u00a0\u00a0The issue is that they have the right to be:\u00a0\u00a0\u201c\u2026<em>(T)he homeless, tempest-tost to me.\u00a0\u00a0I lift my lamp beside the golden door<\/em>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/46550\/the-new-colossus\">New Colossus<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0They have the \u201dright\u201d to enter the \u201cgolden door\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Child Separation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>President Trump&#8217;s administration allowed migrants to cross outside of the \u201clegal\u201d crossing points and then arrested them.\u00a0\u00a0They implemented the infamous \u201cchild-separation\u201d program.  Children crossing with their parents were taken away, based on the \u201ctheory\u201d that anyone crossing the border illegally was committing a crime and therefore \u201cunfit\u201d to keep their children.\u00a0\u00a0Crossing the border is legally a misdemeanor offense, but it  was treated like a \u201cmajor\u201d felony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kids were taken away, and parents imprisoned.\u00a0\u00a0It took far too long, but  public outrage at the child separation program  became deafening. Trump was forced to end it.\u00a0\u00a0As many as 2000 children were separated when the program was stopped.\u00a0\u00a0Today, years later,  150 kids remain unable to reunite with their loved ones (<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/3678196-biden-administration-has-reunited-500-families-separated-under-trump\/\">The Hill<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the child-separation program ended, the Trump Administration looked for a different way to keep migrants across the border.&nbsp;&nbsp;They took on the Sisyphean task of sealing the border physically to force migrants to only come through legal entry points.&nbsp;&nbsp;They built walls and fences.&nbsp;&nbsp;But as the phrase goes, all it takes to get over a sixteen foot wall is a seventeen foot ladder.&nbsp;&nbsp;And the migrants kept coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Title 42<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But, since 2020 those migrants who wish to enter legally are blocked.\u00a0\u00a0What would be a violation of law and treaty, is allowed under\u00a0\u00a0\u201cTitle 42\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s not an immigration law, or something new passed by Congress.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a public health regulation, placed in effect during the pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0It closed the borders to prevent the spread of Covid.\u00a0\u00a0And while much of the United States, and particularly the anti-vaccine set, are far \u201cover\u201d Covid, many are still in favor of keeping the migrants out.\u00a0\u00a0Even though &#8220;out&#8221; tens of thousands wait across a narrow band of normally fordable water called the Rio Grande River, which makes up much of the US Southern border. (Current Covid death rates in the US, remain at almost 400 per day).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for those who crossed illegally, instead of being processed, they were simply put on buses and sent back across the border.  Title 42 allows the suspension of their due process rights .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Biden Administration isn\u2019t totally blameless.\u00a0\u00a0When Trump imposed \u201cTitle 42\u201d, thousands of migrants were stacked up in the border cities across from the US.\u00a0\u00a0And while they waited, many more thousands found their way to those same border towns.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The inevitable result is that the pressure on the border towns is enormous.\u00a0\u00a0Conditions are deteriorating, violence and crime is increasing, and the US has done little to prepare for the \u201csurge\u201d guaranteed when normal border crossings resume.\u00a0\u00a0The Administration did try to end Title 42 restrictions, but Republican Governors  battled in the Courts to keep the rule in place.\u00a0\u00a0Meanwhile the pressure on the border just grows greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Do We Stand For?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The rule was supposed to be lifted yesterday, but Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stay keeping Title 42 rule in place.\u00a0\u00a0On the South side of the border, migrants are growing increasingly restless, with rumors of the change in rules stirring everyone up.\u00a0\u00a0Should the Supreme Court allow the President to end the health restrictions, no one knows how many thousands will surge through both legal and illegal entry points.\u00a0\u00a0And while that surge is completely foreseeable, little has been done to prepare.  The cork will be out of the bottle, and no way to clean up the mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even today, migrants who do cross are sleeping on the streets of El Paso and other border towns, because there is nowhere for them to go.\u00a0\u00a0Private agencies are completely full, and existing public facilities are packed as well.\u00a0\u00a0Just now, FEMA and other Federal agencies are moving in to prepare for the onslaught.  Better late than never, but late non-the-less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And once they arrive, and housing is arranged to keep families together, there is still the question:  we are a nation conceived in immigration, built by immigrants, and searching for an increase in the labor force.
