{"id":5936,"date":"2022-09-22T09:50:41","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T13:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=5936"},"modified":"2023-07-13T11:24:23","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T15:24:23","slug":"no-news-is-bad-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2022\/09\/22\/no-news-is-bad-news\/","title":{"rendered":"No News is Bad News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gadfly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald Trump said it best, back in the 1980\u2019s, before anyone expected the New York braggadocio to be a serious candidate for any office.&nbsp;&nbsp;He said, that it was better to be in the press for anything, good or bad, than not to be mentioned at all.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reiterated that message in 2015, when he was a \u201cgadfly\u201d candidate for President that no one took seriously.\u00a0\u00a0The Republican Party had \u201cserious\u201d candidates,\u00a0\u00a0Governors Bush, Christie and Kasich, among others.\u00a0\u00a0The failed casino owner and television star of \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d wouldn\u2019t have a chance in a \u201cnormal\u201d year.\u00a0\u00a0But Donald Trump took the lessons of the 1980\u2019s to heart.\u00a0\u00a0He was constantly on the air, calling into liberal MSNBC\u2019s flagship program \u201cMorning Joe\u201d show day after day.\u00a0\u00a0And he said the most outrageous things, like; \u201c\u2026he\u2019s a war hero because he got captured. I like people who don\u2019t get captured,\u201d about Senator John McCain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cancelling Out<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>2016 was like that 9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;grade math class, where we learned to \u201ccancel out\u201d. It was this number cancels that number, and cross them off. Simple math:&nbsp;&nbsp;Christie cancels out Bush, Kasich cancels out Walker, Paul cancels out Cruz.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the end all that was left was Donald Trump, who managed to win a plurality of the primary votes, but no majorities until the \u201cequation\u201d was solved.&nbsp;&nbsp;And then he was the candidate for President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I try not to write about Donald Trump.&nbsp;&nbsp;I figure I\u2019m just (in a very small way) giving him what he wants, needs, craves, \u201cjones for\u201d:&nbsp;&nbsp;attention.&nbsp;&nbsp;But it\u2019s hard not to write about the plight Donald Trump finds himself in today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day in Court<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He got all the attention yesterday, across three different venues.&nbsp;&nbsp;In his old home town, New York City, the State Attorney General Letitia James laid out civil charges against Trump, his family, his company, and its employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;She accused them of what Trump has always bragged of:&nbsp;&nbsp;cheating the system.&nbsp;&nbsp;In over two hundred pages James brought charges against Trump and his business that carry a \u201ccivil\u201d death penalty.&nbsp;&nbsp;If New York wins the lawsuit, then Trump and his family are banned from running their companies, banned from getting loans to extend their pyramid scheme real estate deals, banned from participating in the market.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When Trump\u2019s loans come due, there will be no \u201cnew bank\u201d to carry him, at least, not a bank that does business in New York.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the conservative 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0Court of Appeals of the United States slapped down Trump\u2019s arguments for \u201cPresidential Privilege\u201d in the FBI search case.\u00a0\u00a0Trump was able to find a friendly District Court Judge who literally made the arguments that his attorneys failed to do.\u00a0\u00a0Her rulings flipped normal court process on its top; but the Appeals court righted the ship.\u00a0\u00a0They said the obvious:\u00a0\u00a0classified documents are classified \u2013 and don\u2019t belong in boxes scattered around a Florida country club.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Appeals Court ruled that the FBI could continue their investigation into what America\u2019s most classified materials were doing at Mar-A-Lago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special Master<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And the \u201cSpecial Master\u201d that Trump and his attorneys both agreed to, met with attorneys for both sides on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also put the Court back on course, requiring Trump\u2019s attorneys to explain why Trump should have classified materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;When they refused to argue the point, he gave credit to the government \u2013 they had the whole classification process on their side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bad days in Court for Donald Trump.\u00a0\u00a0But it was a good day in the \u201cmedia\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Trump got an hour sit down with buddy Sean Hannity on\u00a0<em>Fox<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0He played the \u201cvictim\u201d of FBI abuse:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t even find my Last Will and Testament\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Hannity asked if he was named in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Trump became the &#8220;lead&#8221; headline on almost every news show, every <a href=\"https:\/\/ensamble19.com.ar\/tapasusa.php\">newspaper<\/a> in the country.  He couldn&#8217;t ask for anything better, even in the 80&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Season<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The January 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Committee is back for a \u201cnew season\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s not a television series, but Chairman Thompson and Vice Chairman Cheney are orchestrating it like one.&nbsp;&nbsp;We left with the minute by minute of a President watching \u201cRome Burn\u201d on January 6th.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now they\u2019ll open with \u201cthe plot\u201d behind the riots.&nbsp;&nbsp;Just like the network crimes shows and their fall premieres, the Committee returns on September 28<sup>th<\/sup>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To further \u201cstir the plot\u201d, Supreme Court Justice spouse Ginny Thomas will talk to the committee. We\u2019ll have to wait and see if she makes \u201cprime time\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The election fraud investigation in Atlanta has \u201cgone silent\u201d until after the election.&nbsp;&nbsp;But make no mistake, Fani Willis, the Fulton County Prosecutor, is pursuing charges at the highest level.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her last words before going quiet:&nbsp;&nbsp;some of these charges will require jail terms.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick aside:&nbsp;&nbsp;so many of those willing to stand against Trumpism are powerful women like James in New York, Cheney in Washington, Willis in Atlanta.&nbsp;&nbsp;It makes the men who folded to Trump; \u201cpowers\u201d like Rubio, Graham, Cruz, McConnell, and Ryan; seem even more puny.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good News for Democrats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Trump may see all this publicity as \u201cgood\u201d for him \u2013 it\u2019s probably not so good for the Republican Party.\u00a0\u00a0They are trying to build their mid-term campaign around inflation, immigration and crime.\u00a0\u00a0Governor DeSantis is willing to spend millions of Florida taxpayer dollars for \u201cstunts\u201d to press the immigration issue home, and it worked for a couple of days.\u00a0\u00a0But with Trump\u2019s troubles, the focus is shifting back to one of the Democrats top concerns: democracy is at stake.\u00a0\u00a0That message is pretty simple \u2013 a vote for a Republican is a vote for Donald Trump, a vote for the Insurrection, and a vote against women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of Trump\u2019s legal troubles puts the Democratic message up front.&nbsp;&nbsp;And that\u2019s good news for democracy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gadfly Donald Trump said it best, back in the 1980\u2019s, before anyone expected the New York braggadocio to be a serious candidate for any office.&nbsp;&nbsp;He said, that it was better to be in the press for anything, good or bad, than not to be mentioned at all.&nbsp;&nbsp; He reiterated that message in 2015, when he &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2022\/09\/22\/no-news-is-bad-news\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;No News is Bad News&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5936","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>No News is Bad News : Our America - Essays on Politics and American Life<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Trump had a bad day in three courts this week.
