No I\u2019m not writing about OUR dogs \u2013 again.\u00a0\u00a0But they\u00a0\u00a0are always scattered around my office.\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019re watching replays of the Qanon Trump rally.\u00a0\u00a0They’re asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wave Running<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 mid-term elections are seven weeks away.  All of the polling indicates that, much like 2020 and 2018; this election will be narrowly decided by a critically divided nation.  What looked in June like a \u201cRed Wave\u201d election, giving Republicans control of the House and the Senate, now looks a Red-Blue wash, with power decided by one or two seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The election theory that I grew up with and used over the past fifty years seems no longer true.\u00a0\u00a0In the old days, just a decade ago, candidates ran to their base in the primaries, and then ran to the center for the general election.\u00a0\u00a0They ran to their base because the base that showed up to vote in the primary elections.\u00a0\u00a0Then they ran to center, because the base was not big enough to win a general election.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wipe Out <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The difference today is in the incredible polarization of American politics.  We are so divided, that it is difficult to \u201cmove\u201d to the center, without \u201cbetraying\u201d the absolute values of the base.  Take the Republican Senate candidate from New Hampshire, former Brigadier General Don Bolduc<\/a>.  He won the primary as a \u201ctrue-believer\u201d in election denial, claiming that Joe Biden was an illegitimate pretender rather than the elected President of the United States.  How could it be possible to \u201ccenter\u201d that view? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simple \u2013 come out a few days after the primary election, with a religious-like \u201crevelation\u201d. After further consideration he now believes that Biden was in fact legitimately elected.\u00a0\u00a0It is a most blatant version of \u201cflip-flopping\u201d, and unlikely to convince anyone in the center that the General has changed his view.\u00a0\u00a0While he may want to be more centered, his primary statements aren\u2019t going away.\u00a0\u00a0And he really can\u2019t afford to lose his base anyway \u2013 so there\u2019s a clear wink-wink going on.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s just hard to say which side is getting the wink, and which is getting the lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to Base<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But looking at other races nationwide, many candidates are doing the opposite of \u201cold school\u201d politics.  Instead of running to the middle, they are running to their base.  Take JD Vance in Ohio, for example.  Since the Republican primary, he\u2019s stated that he\u2019s for banning all abortions, period, and that women should stay in abusive relationships \u201cfor the children\u201d.  And Saturday night, as The Ohio State University football team soundly defeated the upstart team from Toledo, Vance appeared beside Donald Trump at a Youngstown, Ohio rally.  Trump called it out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJ.D. is kissing my ass.  Of course he want\u2019s my support.  He fell in love with me the same way that Kim Jong Un did\u2026\u201d (USA<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance swallows Trump\u2019s humiliating statements, as long as the disgraced President still campaigns for him.\u00a0\u00a0It doesn\u2019t even matter that Trump compared Vance to the North Korean Boy-Dictator.\u00a0\u00a0It only matters that Vance got Trump\u2019s stamp of approval.\u00a0\u00a0You can hardly say that\u2019s moving to the middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nationally Republicans are worried.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0Dodd\u00a0<\/em>decision changed what the 2022 voter turnout will look like.\u00a0\u00a0Women are leading men in new voter registration, and they are ready to punish candidates who want to ban all abortions.\u00a0\u00a0But since ending abortion is central to the \u201cheart\u201d of the Republican base belief, what\u2019s a candidate supposed to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old Subjects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Changing the subject is the best Republican leadership has to offer.\u00a0\u00a0And they are trying a \u201cnew trick\u201d for that \u201cold dog\u201d of an issue \u2013 immigration.\u00a0\u00a0Remember the golden elevator, and Trump\u2019s introduction to American politics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026They\u2019re bringing drugs. They\u2019re bringing crime. They\u2019re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s answer was to \u201cBuild a Wall\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0That resonated with the base, perhaps enough to win in 2016.\u00a0\u00a0But in 2018, when \u201cThe Wall\u201d wasn\u2019t enough, we learned about the mythical \u201cCARAVANS\u201d bringing thousands more to the border.\u00a0\u00a0But even that wasn\u2019t enough to stop the \u201cslow Blue Wave\u201d that gave Democrats control of the Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in 2022, the Governors of Florida and Texas are going back to immigration once again.\u00a0\u00a0They are tricking migrants already across the border, into becoming political pawns.\u00a0\u00a0And they are sending them to Democratic cities, often without warning authorities. There’s a taunt; \u201cSee, they\u2019re your problem now\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Last week Texas Governor Abbott bused migrants to the Vice Presidential mansion (the National Observatory) in Washington, DC.\u00a0\u00a0Florida Governor DeSantis followed a Tucker Carlson suggestion, and borrowed migrants from Texas to fly to Martha\u2019s Vineyard.\u00a0\u00a0Today, more Texas migrants are supposedly scheduled to land near Biden\u2019s house in Delaware (Newsweek<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0All at Florida taxpayer expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same Result<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s all about changing the subject \u2013 anything, even the Trump legal problems, are better for Republicans than talking about abortion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immigration is an old dog, and the \u201cnew migrant trick\u201d appeals only to their base.\u00a0\u00a0But like it or not, turnout is what the November 2022 election is going to be all about.\u00a0\u00a0Which Party gets out more of their base to the polls, and which Party\u2019s base stays home, will decide who controls Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter how hard Republicans try to ignore the abortion issue, it\u2019s not going away.\u00a0\u00a0And that gives Democrats a chance to even the odds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
