Ancient Rome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Praetorian Guards were the private protectors of the Roman Emperors.\u00a0\u00a0And they were more than just guardians of the Imperial lives.\u00a0\u00a0They were the Emperors\u2019 private intelligence service, keeping track of his enemies for over three centuries.\u00a0\u00a0The Praetorian Guard also became a power unto themselves. They grew from protecting Emperors to determining who would actually wear the throne.\u00a0\u00a0Finally, the Emperor Constantine disbanded the Praetorians, sending the remaining members to the far corners of the Roman Empire.\u00a0\u00a0The inner wall of\u00a0\u00a0their headquarters, the Castle Praetoria, was destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term \u201cPraetorian Guard\u201d became synonymous with any force surrounding a leader to maintain his (or her) power.  It\u2019s more than just physical protection, the term \u201cPraetorian\u201d symbolizes the political power to determine who that leader would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secret Service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The United States Secret Service was founded at the end of the Civil War to protect the US Government\u2019s most important asset:\u00a0\u00a0American currency.\u00a0\u00a0At that time, almost one-third of the paper money was counterfeit. The Treasury Department needed its own \u201cpolicing force\u201d to gain control of the money supply.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The late 1800\u2019s saw a series of American Presidents assassinated: Lincoln in 1865, Garfield in 1881, and McKinley in 1901.\u00a0\u00a0While the Army and local police had informal protection duties, ultimately no one was directly responsible for protecting the President\u2019s life.\u00a0\u00a0After McKinley\u2019s death, the Secret Service, still part of Treasury, was given the job.\u00a0\u00a0(The Department of Justice didn\u2019t have a \u201cpolicing\u201d agency until 1908, and the FBI wasn\u2019t created until the 1920\u2019s.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Fail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since that time, the Service has had two missions:  to protect the US currency, and to protect America\u2019s President and other leaders.  The balance of importance between those two missions tilted over the years, with the Protective Detail gaining importance.  Recently, the agency was moved from the Treasury Department to the Department of Homeland Security.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Presidential Protection detail is a \u201cno fail\u201d operation.\u00a0\u00a0There are thousands of threats on the President every year, from cranks to organized conspiracies.\u00a0\u00a0Success is determined by stopping every single one of those threats.\u00a0\u00a0Failure is when just one gets through.\u00a0\u00a0The Secret Service not only physically protects. It also acts as a law enforcement agency, investigating potential threats and gathering evidence to turn over to US Attorneys for prosecution.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have been a continuing series of assassination attempts on the President:\u00a0\u00a0 Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Ford, and Reagan were all directly attacked.\u00a0\u00a0Kennedy and Reagan were both hit by gunfire, with Kennedy killed.\u00a0\u00a0In our current polarized environment, the threat to the President must be as intense as ever.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secret Service does not \u201cenforce the law\u201d on its \u201cprotectees\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Steve Ford (President Ford\u2019s son) smoked marijuana in the White House. And we all know what Bill Clinton was doing in the hallways of the West Wing.\u00a0\u00a0The Service needs to have the trust of their\u00a0charges, so they step back from their law enforcement role to protect.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, the Secret Service agents on the Presidential protective detail would literally “take a bullet\u201d for their protectee.\u00a0\u00a0Agent Rufus Youngblood used his own body to shield Vice President Lyndon Johnson in the open limousine directly behind Kennedy\u2019s as the shots rang out in Dallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Missing Evidence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As a law enforcement agency, the Secret Service is well aware of the importance of evidence.  So it\u2019s incredulous to think that the agency would allow the destruction of their agents\u2019 text messages sent during the greatest threat to the US Government since the Civil War.  But that\u2019s exactly what they are saying:  that in a pre-scheduled technology \u201cupgrade\u201d, they erased many of the Presidential Protective detail messages from January 5th<\/sup> and 6th<\/sup>, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone in the Secret Service is a law enforcement agent, a cop.\u00a0\u00a0Everyone knew the gravity of what happened on January 6th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0We know that the agents protecting Vice President Pence were just seconds ahead of the mob chanting \u201cHang Mike Pence\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We also know that when they planned to whisk him away from the danger in the Capitol, Pence refused to go.\u00a0\u00a0He told the head of the protective detail, \u201cI know you, but I don\u2019t know the driver of the limo\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Was Pence just doing his duty to the Constitution, or did he suspect something more sinister?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protect and Serve<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the Agency\u2019s Director determined that revealing those texts would put their protective mission at risk.\u00a0\u00a0If Presidential Detail agents are used as \u201cevidence\u201d against a \u201cprotectee\u201d, then the Service won’t be trusted the next time.\u00a0\u00a0Bill Clinton\u2019s detail were ordered to testify about Monica Lewinsky (WAPO<\/a>), a case that went all the way to the Supreme Court.\u00a0\u00a0By deleting the texts, there one less piece of evidence to talk about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we also know that Donald Trump, President of the United States, wanted to be with \u201chis people\u201d as they marched on the Capitol.\u00a0\u00a0The testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson revealed conversations about an altercation in the Presidential SUV, as the Commander-in-Chief was told that the Protective Detail would not take him to the march.\u00a0\u00a0A Metro Police officer assigned to the motorcade substantiated the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what were these Service agents saying to each other, on the \u201cprivacy\u201d of government issued phones? That won’t be known.\u00a0\u00a0And like Mike Pence, it leads the nation to ask:\u00a0\u00a0were they protecting their charge, or enabling a threat to the Nation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secret Service protects the President.  It is not, and cannot be, a Praetorian Guard.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
