{"id":5346,"date":"2022-02-18T07:49:11","date_gmt":"2022-02-18T12:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=5346"},"modified":"2022-02-18T07:49:15","modified_gmt":"2022-02-18T12:49:15","slug":"talking-with-a-friend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2022\/02\/18\/talking-with-a-friend\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking with a Friend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"generations\">Generations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I had a conversation with a younger friend of mine the other day.&nbsp;&nbsp;He asked very serious questions:&nbsp;&nbsp;why should the United States get involved in a conflict, far away in Eastern Europe?&nbsp;&nbsp;Why aren\u2019t Russian concerns about being \u201cencircled\u201d by hostile alliances just as valid as our worries about the Caribbean or Central America?&nbsp;&nbsp;Shouldn\u2019t our European \u201cfriends\u201d spend their treasure and blood to deal with Russia, instead of the US standing in as the \u201cworld\u2019s policeman?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frankly, I am always ready to answer those questions.\u00a0\u00a0I am a \u201cBoomer\u201d, the child of World War II veterans.\u00a0\u00a0That label is an honor, not an insult. My generation was the \u201cprize\u201d that our parents earned with their sacrifice.\u00a0\u00a0I was raised in memories of their world that tried to bargain with Fascism rather than stand up to its expansion.\u00a0\u00a0My parents steeped me in the loss and sacrifice of their generation, of the friends who disappeared in the air or on the battlefields.\u00a0\u00a0They understood that there was no turning away from that fight \u2013 it would still come and find you, ready or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"realization\">Realization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But it was his next question that caught me unprepared.\u00a0\u00a0He phrased it a little differently, but it basically went:\u00a0\u00a0how can I trust a government who spent twenty years in Afghanistan to no avail, then simply turned and walked away?\u00a0\u00a0The accusation in his tone wasn\u2019t for the leaving, but for staying with no good result.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0And today, I watched the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, lay out the case against Russia in the United Nations Security Council.\u00a0\u00a0His words were persuasive, just as tellingly solid as the last time our highest foreign minister warned of impending war in that same body.\u00a0\u00a0That was an even more respected Secretary of State:\u00a0\u00a0General Colin Powell, laying out the case against Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"experience\">Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And then I realized why my thirty-something friend was so adamant against war. In his lifetime, Americans went into Afghanistan after 9-11 with good cause, to punish the Taliban and destroy Al Qaeda.&nbsp;&nbsp;But when we achieved both, we didn\u2019t declare victory and leave. We instead stayed for two decades and tried, using George W Bush\u2019s phrase, to \u201cnation build\u201d. My friend\u2019s compatriots were the last to stand on the ridges of Helmand Province, fighting to no avail.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are suffering today the devastating mental effects of that war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;And in the midst of that, we determined to invade Iraq as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;With all respect for General Powell, who was force-fed bad information at Presidential order: he lied about why we should invade the country.&nbsp;&nbsp;And while getting rid of Saddam Hussein might have been a laudable goal, we opened up a world of conflict that his iron fist controlled.&nbsp;&nbsp;The suffering in the region spread, from Iraq to Syria, and continues even today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My friend has no experiential reason to \u201ctrust\u201d that the United States is making a valid decision about Russia\u2019s actions in Ukraine today.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cWhere is OUR interest, so far away, in a nation where we couldn\u2019t fight, even if we wanted to?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;He speaks with the authority of recent history, and a podcast fueled omniscience.&nbsp;&nbsp;I get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"doomed-to-repeat\">Doomed to Repeat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But I look at a wider history than just the US military failures of the 21st Century.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the 1930\u2019s, there were two world powers; both authoritarian regimes, and both wanted to expand their hegemony in separate spheres.&nbsp;&nbsp;They found alliance in their enemies.&nbsp;&nbsp;One was recovering from an utter collapse at the end of World War I.&nbsp;&nbsp;The other was seeking domination of Asia.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States, embroiled in its own calamities, ignored both.&nbsp;&nbsp;The European nations tried to negotiate with Germany, giving away chunks until there was no choice but to fight.&nbsp;&nbsp;The United States then stood as the only power facing Japan.&nbsp;&nbsp;We ended up fighting both, with the Greatest Generation bearing the brunt of the sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s crisis in Ukraine is not attempting to \u201cdemocratize\u201d tribal nations without foundation.\u00a0\u00a0Ukraine is not Iraq or Afghanistan, it is a nation-state wishing to be autonomous from Russian control.\u00a0\u00a0And if it falls, is it Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, next?\u00a0\u00a0 Then what?\u00a0What about China expanding into Taiwan, the Sea of China, the \u201cPacific Sphere of Influence\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History would have been different if we had backed Europe, standing up to Hitler at the Anschluss, or at Munich.\u00a0\u00a0What if the world had stood against Japan in Korea, or Manchuria?\u00a0\u00a0But even back then they said, \u201cWhere is OUR interest, so far away, in a nation where we couldn\u2019t fight, even if we wanted to?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0OUR interest whether it\u2019s Hitler and Tojo then, or Putin and Xi today:  it is better to stand for democracy and against authoritarianism early.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If not, then you surely will have to stand against it later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Generations I had a conversation with a younger friend of mine the other day.&nbsp;&nbsp;He asked very serious questions:&nbsp;&nbsp;why should the United States get involved in a conflict, far away in Eastern Europe?&nbsp;&nbsp;Why aren\u2019t Russian concerns about being \u201cencircled\u201d by hostile alliances just as valid as our worries about the Caribbean or Central America?&nbsp;&nbsp;Shouldn\u2019t our European &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2022\/02\/18\/talking-with-a-friend\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Talking with a Friend&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5346","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Talking with a Friend : Our America - Essays on Politics and American Life<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"The world stands at the precipice of conflict in Ukraine.
