Two Sides<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are two sides to every issue \u2013 that might be the \u201ctheme\u201d of this third decade of the twenty-first century.\u00a0\u00a0And if you take one side, you aren\u2019t supposed to \u201clisten\u201d to the other.\u00a0\u00a0Take your stand, choose a side, make up your mind:\u00a0\u00a0then don\u2019t let an ounce of doubt ever make you question.\u00a0\u00a0And go find \u201caffirmation\u201d, information that wholly supports your view.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like it or not, the motto of\u00a0Fox News,\u00a0<\/em>\u201cfair and balanced\u201d, is what\u2019s supposed to happen.\u00a0\u00a0Not that\u00a0Fox News\u00a0<\/em>has ever been \u201cfair and balanced\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Like a line out of Orwell\u2019s\u00a01984,\u00a0<\/em>where the Ministry of Truth does nothing but spout propaganda,\u00a0Fox News\u00a0<\/em>tries to take the high ground with their motto, then tells their tales of a biased world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fair<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fair means to tell both sides of the story.  That\u2019s the original \u201ctwo sides\u201d to every issue.  There are \u201cGen X and Z\u201d directed news shows, that make a big deal about letting their viewers make up their own minds.  They present the two sides, and then leave conclusions to someone else.  And that sounds eminently reasonable.  But it presumes something that often isn\u2019t true:  that the audience has the expertise to understand and analyze the \u201ctwo sides\u201d.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That plays into the conceit of the Google<\/em> (or Duck, Duck, Go<\/em> wouldn\u2019t want to be tracked) generation.\u00a0\u00a0They can become \u201cexperts\u201d in any field, with a few clicks on the mouse and fifteen minutes on YouTube<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0And that \u201cfaux\u201d expertise makes them vulnerable.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s a flaw, whether it\u2019s in Cheddar News<\/em> or\u00a0Fox News\u00a0<\/em>itself.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balanced<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 Then there\u2019s the falsehood in the second part of the motto: balanced.   Fox <\/em>always \u201cbalances\u201d it\u2019s new analysis with \u201cliberal\u201d voices.  Juan Williams was the original.  A well-known NPR<\/em> commentator, Juan was ultimately fired from NPR<\/em> for his association with Fox.<\/em>  He was the \u201cone\u201d on the panel, maybe the \u201cone\u201d liberal, maybe the \u201cone\u201d black man, that created balance.  But Juan\u2019s balance was often, maybe always, drowned out by the chorus of \u201cright-wing\u201d voices on the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before you start writing your rebuttal, I\u2019m well aware that some of the\u00a0NBC\u00a0<\/em>news shows do the same thing.\u00a0\u00a0Meet the Press\u00a0<\/em>often has two liberals, two \u201cneutral newscasters\u201d, and one conservative on their panels.\u00a0\u00a0And those conservatives serve the same purpose as Williams does on\u00a0Fox,\u00a0<\/em>to be the counter-point to the more liberal views of the others.\u00a0\u00a0Rich Lowry, editor of the conservative\u00a0National Review\u00a0<\/em>often plays that role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we can agree that both sides create a \u201cfaux balance\u201d in some of their news shows.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preponderance of Evidence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But there is a more subversive form of balance, one that plays into the \u201cinternet expertise\u201d so prevalent today.  For example, let\u2019s talk about a subject most folks agree on:  climate change.  A fair newscast would present \u201cboth sides\u201d, the scientists who carefully explain why human action is causing rapid climate change, and the scientist who says it\u2019s all \u201cjust nature\u201d and we\u2019ve been here before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a balanced newscast would present the ninety-nine scientists who know that climate change is exacerbated by man, and then the one who disagrees.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the real \u201cbalance\u201d in the scientific community \u2013 the vast preponderance of climate scientists who can demonstrate humanity\u2019s role in climate warming, versus the few \u201coutliers\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The outliers may be amplified by the massive industries, particularly oil, who finance their media campaigns.\u00a0\u00a0But in the end, there are very few climate scientists who believe that climate change is natural without a major human component.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internet Expertise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Of course the debate doesn\u2019t happen that way.  And since the climate scientist and the climate denier are \u201chead-to-head\u201d, they apparently start on an equal footing.   And that\u2019s the problem.  Because when you look at the vast majority of science, they aren\u2019t.  But since we can all be \u201cclimate experts\u201d with a click and a view, we can pick and choose our \u201caffirmative\u201d data, or follow our trusted commentator\u2019s opinion (even after he says that he doesn\u2019t have \u201ca side\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While climate change may ultimately be the greater threat to humanity, and should be the center of scientific debate, that\u2019s not what our current scientific crisis is about.\u00a0\u00a0We all know the scientific \u201csides\u201d we are taking.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not about the atmosphere, it\u2019s about the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set Up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve been set up.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are told we can become experts ourselves, just by watching a YouTube video, or reading a synopsis of someone\u2019s theory.  And as we invest our time and brain-width trying to understand virology (you could replace that with \u201crocket science\u201d) the years of study  required gets condensed to a one hour podcast. And we believe.  I get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m a pole vault coach.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve spent over forty years teaching and learning about the event.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve \u201capprenticed\u201d with some of the best coaches in the nation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And I\u2019ve had thousands of vaulters to teach, coach, and learn from.\u00a0\u00a0The technique of pole vault I teach is proven to be effective, and not just by me (want to check that out \u2013\u00a0Ohio Pole Vault Safety<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But you can click on the internet, and find so-called experts teaching pole vault like they know what they\u2019re doing.\u00a0\u00a0And what they\u2019re doing could ultimately get someone killed.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s dangerous, and even more so because they say:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cJust follow our internet instructions and you\u2019ll be great!!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0You won\u2019t be, you\u2019re more likely to be broke (financially and physically).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I won\u2019t in any way advance their cause, so I won\u2019t publish the website.  But if it can happen in something as esoteric as pole vaulting, what about something as politically volatile as the Covid vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my way, I\u2019m trying to make pole vaulting safer.  The real \u201cexperts\u201d in the field are with me.  And none of us learned how to coach from a website or YouTube video.  Maybe we should all be listening to the vast majority of experts about vaccines (and climate change) as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
