The Gag Rule<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It was called the \u201cgag rule\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0From 1835 until 1844, the United States House of Representatives banned debate on the pivotal issue of the time \u2013 slavery.\u00a0The Nation spiraled down for nine years towards the depths of secession and Civil War. And the legislature refused to allow discussion of the topic.\u00a0\u00a0Former President John Quincy Adams, then a representative from his native Massachusetts, again and again tried to get the \u201cgag rule\u201d lifted.\u00a0\u00a0But it took until 1844 to gain enough votes to allow just a debate on slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rationale: there was nothing but acrimony to be gained by debate.\u00a0\u00a0There were not enough votes to change anything, to somehow make the issue \u201cbetter\u201d for either side. So better to not even bring it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School Shooting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday four Michigan high schools students died and another seven injured at Oxford High School, about thirty miles north of Detroit.\u00a0\u00a0They were killed by a \u201ctypical\u201d school shooter; a fifteen year old white boy with a semi-automatic pistol.\u00a0\u00a0He went through two \u201cclips\u201d and was loading a third when the police arrived and quickly apprehended him in the hall.\u00a0 They captured him uninjured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While information is limited, we know it was his father\u2019s gun, purchased four days before on \u201cBlack Friday\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t know the reasons for the shootings, or what connections the victims had with the assailant.\u00a0What we do know is this. Nothing more will be done to prevent the next school shooter .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I wrote my first essay on school shootings in \u201cOur America\u201d on February 15th, 2018, almost four years ago.  It was called \u201cAgain<\/a>\u201d, and it was written the day after seventeen high school students and teachers were killed in Parkland, Florida.  The title was prophetic, the shootings at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School weren\u2019t the first of 2018, and it wouldn\u2019t be the last either.  It just happens, again, and again, and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s so common that it hardly breaks into the news cycle.\u00a0\u00a0Yesterday\u2019s catastrophe was the\u00a0\u00a0twentieth of this school year (NYT<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0The word \u201ccatastrophe\u201d speaks of some infrequent and overwhelming event, not something so commonplace as \u201cjust\u201d another school shooting.\u00a0\u00a0But for the parents of those four murdered children, and the wounded, and the students of Oxford High School, their world will never be the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inaction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But what have we done to prevent this?  What actions have we taken to protect the students of Oxford, or Parkland, or Pataskala where I am substitute teaching today?  As a former school administrator I can tell you there are three answers to that question. First, we have done a lot. Second,  we have not come close to \u201csolving\u201d the problem.  And third, our students are still at risk, perhaps just as much as they were before Parkland, and even before Columbine, almost twenty-two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t fault school administrators, or police departments with School Resource Officers, or even the parents of the \u201cshooters\u201d who don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on.\u00a0\u00a0Schools have spent millions of dollars and thousands of hours of time trying to protect our kids.\u00a0\u00a0Police (or in the case of this school, the Sheriff\u2019s Department) are willing and able to lay their lives down to protect our kids, I have no doubt.\u00a0\u00a0So are the teachers in the building, as I was when I was the Dean of Students.\u00a0\u00a0But none of that has made much of a difference \u2013 twenty school shootings since last August.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acceptance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is an old public relations trick.\u00a0\u00a0When asked if you\u2019ve solved a problem that you can\u2019t fix, you talk about man-hours, dollars, construction changes, contingency plans.\u00a0\u00a0You talk about how much you\u2019ve \u201cworked\u201d the problem.\u00a0\u00a0But in the end, none of what we\u2019ve done in the past twenty-two years, or the past four, have made much of a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some will argue that you can\u2019t know what you stopped; how many schools avoided the \u201cschool shooter\u201d experience through all of those \u201cman-hours, dollars, construction changes and contingency plans\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And they would be right.\u00a0\u00a0But in the end, we have obviously failed.\u00a0\u00a0Failed those four kids who died Tuesday, failed those seven, some still battling for their lives, and failed the kids who huddle in the corners of classrooms in every school in the nation practicing \u201cschool shooter\u201d drills.\u00a0\u00a0We have not even come close to solving the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lead from Behind<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

America is a nation awash in guns.\u00a0\u00a0On this, the fifth day of hunting season, here in Pataskala rifles are everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0But it\u2019s not just hunting rifles.\u00a0\u00a0Our nation is filled with handguns, rapid change ammunition clips, semi-automatic \u201cmilitary style\u201d rifles, and all sorts of ways to more effectively kill not just deer, but people.\u00a0\u00a0In our polarized nation, there is no chance that we might find a real solution to school shootings.\u00a0\u00a0Oh, politicians on all sides will \u201csay a prayer\u201d and \u201chold the students in our hearts\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But nothing can be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be speeches on the floor of the House of Representatives about the need for gun law reforms.\u00a0\u00a0There isn\u2019t a \u201cgag order\u201d preventing it.\u00a0\u00a0But we are bound by “politics” from acting.\u00a0\u00a0That inability is a direct reflection of America\u2019s division over the issue.\u00a0\u00a0Just a little more than half of Americans are in favor of more restrictive gun legislation, but 40% live in a household with a gun (Pew<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0In our time where \u201cleadership\u201d is politically dangerous and politicians read the polls before they determine any \u201cstand\u201d, it shouldn\u2019t be a surprise that we can\u2019t find a solution.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Americans accept this level of gun violence in our schools. \u00a0\u00a0We are so determined to have “our guns” that, unlike anywhere else in the world, we allow our children to die. Our inability to even address the problem creates \u201ccollateral damage\u201d \u2013 the four dead of Oxford, the seventeen dead of Parkland, and the fear every student feels in school in the United States.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s our choice \u2013 and the good citizens of the United States have made it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
