{"id":5071,"date":"2021-11-30T08:03:44","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T13:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=5071"},"modified":"2021-11-30T08:03:47","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T13:03:47","slug":"the-right-to-infect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2021\/11\/30\/the-right-to-infect\/","title":{"rendered":"The Right to Infect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post-Truth&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We live in a post-truth era.&nbsp;&nbsp;What in any other time would be widely accepted as fact, today is a matter of \u201copinion\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;No matter what \u201cscience\u201d learns, no matter what level of expertise someone has in a particular subject, everyone\u2019s opinions about everything, all of a sudden, are valued.&nbsp;&nbsp;You have yours, I have mine, and somehow, they both have equal weight.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because we can go \u201con Google\u201d and find any justification for any theory we want.\u00a0\u00a0And since that information is presented in a \u201csmart\u201d way, say with lab coats in front of the US Capitol, then \u201cobviously\u201d it\u2019s the truth.\u00a0\u00a0All of the credentialing that created trust in the past, from academic degrees to years of expertise, no longer count.\u00a0\u00a0Joe Rogan has at least as much weight in the Covid debate as Anthony Fauci, if not more.\u00a0\u00a0Ask Green Bay Quarterback Aaron Rogers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Rogan (Newton South High School, U-Mass dropout) is an \u201cinfluencer&#8221; with eleven million followers, and that status somehow lends more credence than Fauci\u2019s forty years of scientific leadership and advanced degrees (BA from Holy Cross, MD from Cornell, Honorary Doctorates from 9 Universities).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cExperts\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is foolish.&nbsp;&nbsp;We still want an \u201cexpert\u201d to fix our car, or our broken leg.&nbsp;&nbsp;If I had a question about pole vaulting, I\u2019d go to Greg Hull (Arizona) or Jim Bemiller (Tennessee)&nbsp;&nbsp;or my pole vaulting \u201cguru\u201d, Mark Hannay (Slippery Rock).&nbsp;&nbsp;They are the best, the most experienced.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are the proven experts in the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;Of course folks outside the \u201cpole vault world\u201d don\u2019t know their names.&nbsp;&nbsp;And we didn\u2019t know the names of Tony Fauci (National Institute of Health) or Mike Osterholm (University of Minnesota) or Peter Hotez (Baylor) before Covid either. (Except Fauci, we knew him from AIDS and Ebola).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But our arguments about the pandemic aren\u2019t really scientific ones anymore.\u00a0\u00a0As we are post-truth and post-fact, we are post-science as well.\u00a0\u00a0The debate is now clothed in political terms of \u201cpersonal freedom\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cYou can\u2019t tell me what injection I have to take\u201d, is the argument now, based not in science, but in a narcissistic view of personal privilege versus civic responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">American Dis-Unity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>America has a long tradition of unifying in the face of great crisis.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0From World War I and World War II to 9-11, we have turned to national solutions to solve our national problems.\u00a0\u00a0But we also have a long tradition of dissent to those solutions.\u00a0\u00a0The Vietnam War started with national support.\u00a0\u00a0That didn\u2019t last.\u00a0\u00a0As the war dragged on, Americans discovered that the Government wasn\u2019t telling the truth about the conflict (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nrXlY6gzTTM\">The Post<\/a> &#8211; <\/em> Pentagon Papers).\u00a0\u00a0That revelation didn\u2019t seem to alter national policy or action.\u00a0\u00a0The War continued, through the final years of Johnson\u2019s Presidency and the six years of Nixon\u2019s ill-fated stay in the White House. The Vietnam War didn\u2019t end until 1975, after Ford\u2019s ascension to the Oval Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we have a tradition of unifying under crisis, the Vietnam Era taught a deep distrust of \u201cthe Government\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;That distrust is underlined in popular culture, from the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IAqLKlxY3Eo\">Rambo<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;movies to the heroic portrayals of activist protestors in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FVb6EdKDBfU\">The Trial of the Chicago Seven<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;That distrust is also emphasized in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VHmn9U3c0zA\">The Report<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/em>which examined the actions of the CIA after 9-11, and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AWlE-xX6fDM\">Shock and Awe<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>that looked at the false evidence that justified the invasion of Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add that to the current post-truth era, and maybe it isn\u2019t such a surprise that instead of unifying in the face of a pandemic virus, the United States is fractured.\u00a0\u00a0But that division has a real cost in lives.\u00a0\u00a0The United States still leads the world in Covid deaths, now nearing 800,000.\u00a0\u00a0India, with a population four times the size, has only recently reached half that toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oh, the Needle!!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is logical for a nation faced with a health crisis to search for a way to prevent the disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is logical for that nation to look to the most brilliant to find a preventative, a vaccine.&nbsp;&nbsp;And once it finds that preventative, it\u2019s more than logical for the nation to want it\u2019s citizens to take it.&nbsp;&nbsp;In fact, it is logical to protect the nation, just as logical as it was to draft soldiers for World War I and II, and to ration food and products.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now THAT imposed on \u201cpersonal freedom\u201d \u2013 especially when they put a rifle in your hands and sent you to war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But \u201cOh the needle \u2013 oh the needle in my arm!!!!!\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Clearly that infringement must be beyond \u201cthe pale\u201d for some.&nbsp;&nbsp;The science is irrefutable:&nbsp;&nbsp;the vaccine works, and it would save lives.&nbsp;&nbsp;But that all depends on facts that many don\u2019t believe anymore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Natural Immunity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And the final illogic of our post-truth world is \u201cnatural immunity\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those who had the misfortune of getting Covid, now claim that are \u201cimmune\u201d from the disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;Again, science conflicts with that claim.&nbsp;&nbsp;While prior infection does give some immunity, the level is dependent on how sick you were, and what variant of the disease you had.&nbsp;&nbsp;And worse, instead of \u201crisking\u201d the vaccine, some are more willing to risk the disease itself, in order to gain immunity from \u2013 the disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But those pandering to the anti-vaccine crowd are trying to place \u201cnatural immunity\u201d as equal protection to vaccination.&nbsp;&nbsp;The science, the facts, demonstrates that it isn\u2019t.&nbsp;&nbsp;But since all opinions are \u201cweighed equally\u201d, those that find political shelter in opposing vaccination are now clinging to \u201cnatural immunity\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;I wish they were right.&nbsp;&nbsp;I wish that the almost fifty million Americans already infected by Covid were set.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they\u2019re not.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Omicron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be nice for the worst of Covid to be behind us.\u00a0\u00a0Politically, it would be an advantage for President Biden to be able to say \u201c\u2026he cured the United States\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We have weathered the original infection, then re-infection with the Delta Variant.\u00a0\u00a0But viruses are all about mutation, and the global spread of the corona-virus\u00a0\u00a0encourages genetic changes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world-wide web of transportation means that what happens anywhere in the world, will be everywhere else in days.&nbsp;&nbsp;So the discovery of the Omicron Variant of Covid 19, a variation with multiple mutations, is chilling.&nbsp;&nbsp;We know we can\u2019t stop it from getting into the United States. It\u2019s probably here.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s already in Canada, with two cases identified in Ontario. What we don\u2019t know is how infective it is, and how effective the vaccines will be against it.&nbsp;&nbsp;Omicron may not change a thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;It might change everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be better if we could handle this together; united as a nation against the disease.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s not likely.\u00a0\u00a0The anti-fact machine is already churning out propaganda, claiming that somehow one side is \u201cmaking the variant up\u201d for political gain.\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t share the same facts, nor the same sources of information.
