{"id":4898,"date":"2021-10-20T10:31:58","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T14:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=4898"},"modified":"2021-10-20T10:32:03","modified_gmt":"2021-10-20T14:32:03","slug":"monticellian-sally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2021\/10\/20\/monticellian-sally\/","title":{"rendered":"Monticellian Sally"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Division<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As long as there\u2019s been elections, there\u2019s been divisions.&nbsp;&nbsp;The United States has a rich history of division, from well before the dramatic debates over the Declaration of Independence.&nbsp;&nbsp;But it was particularly virulent during the first seriously contested Presidential election in 1800.&nbsp;&nbsp;John Adams was President, and the Federalist candidate for re-election.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thomas Jefferson was Vice President, the candidate of the Democratic-Republican Party.&nbsp;&nbsp;The two parties were completely at odds over the future of the American Democracy, with both predicting dire consequences if the other won.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Democratic-Republicans won the Presidency by a tie-breaking vote of the House of Representatives, the US Constitution was tested.&nbsp;&nbsp;But President Adams accepted the results, and turned over the government to his rival, Jefferson.&nbsp;&nbsp;He left the new capital, Washington DC, the morning of the inauguration.&nbsp;&nbsp;That began a tradition of peaceful transition of power, a tradition that continued until January 6th of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The \u201cAffair\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But the political division between Federalists and Democratic-Republicans continued.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1802, a \u201cpoem\u201d was published in Federalist newspapers in Philadelphia and Boston.&nbsp;&nbsp;The newspapers claimed in jest that it was authored by Jefferson himself, the \u201cSage of Monticello\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;It ridiculed Jefferson\u2019s long standing \u201caffair\u201d with an enslaved woman he owned, Sally Hemings. Today we would call it rape.&nbsp;&nbsp;That \u201caffair\u201d began after Jefferson\u2019s wife died.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hemings was the half-sister of Jefferson\u2019s deceased wife (they shared the same father), and fourteen years old when their \u201caffair\u201d began (Jefferson was forty-four).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire nation was well aware of Jefferson\u2019s ongoing liaison with Hemings. It produced six children, who became the enslaved property of Jefferson.&nbsp;&nbsp;Monticello is the famous home Jefferson built with enslaved laborers on a mountaintop above Charlottesville, Virginia.&nbsp;&nbsp;The poem can be \u201csung\u201d to another political tune, written originally to ridicule the Colonial troops in 1755, but later taken as a song of \u201chonor\u201d by Americans \u2013&nbsp;<em>Yankee Doodle<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Poem&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Monticellian Sally<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Verse<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211; Of all the damsels on the green, On mountain, or in valley,\u00a0\u00a0A lass so luscious ne\u2019er was seen\u00a0\u00a0As Monticellian Sally.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Refrain<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Yankee doodle, who\u2019s the noodle?\u00a0What wife were half so handy?\u00a0To breed a flock, of slaves for stock, A blackamoor\u2019s the dandy.<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>Verse<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211; Search every town and city through, Search market, street and alley ; No dame at dusk shall meet your view, So yielding as my Sally.<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>Repeat Refrain<\/em><\/strong><em><br><strong>Verse<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; When press\u2019d by loads of state affairs, I seek to sport and dally, The sweetest solace of my cares Is in the lap of Sally.<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>Repeat Refrain\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Verse<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211; Let Yankey parsons preach their worst\u2013Let tory Witling\u2019s rally! You men of morals! and be curst, You\u2019d snap like sharks for Sally.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>Repeat Refrain\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Verse<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211; She\u2019s\u00a0black\u00a0you tell me\u2013grant she be\u2013Must colour always tally? Black is love\u2019s proper hue for me\u2013 And white\u2019s the hue for Sally.*<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Repeat Refrain<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><em><strong>Verse<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; What though she by the glands secretes ; Must I stand shill\u2013I shall\u2013I ? Tuck\u2019d up between a pair of sheets There\u2019s no perfume like Sally\u2021<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Repeat Refrain<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><em><strong>Verse<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; You call her slave\u2013and pray were slaves, Made only for the galley ?
