{"id":4544,"date":"2021-07-28T07:46:55","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T11:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=4544"},"modified":"2021-07-28T07:47:08","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T11:47:08","slug":"letter-to-joe-manchin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2021\/07\/28\/letter-to-joe-manchin\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter to Joe Manchin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia<\/li><li>306 Hart\u00a0Senate Office\u00a0Building<\/li><li>Washington D.C. 20510<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;July 28, 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senator:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am not one of your constituents, but I hope you will still take the time to read a note from a fellow Democrat.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, thank you for your service to West Virginia and to the Nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There has to be an incredible amount of pressure to follow your state\u2019s current governor and switch to the Republican Party.&nbsp;&nbsp;You haven\u2019t and I am glad that you are willing to take \u201cthe heat\u201d of being the only statewide Democratic office holder in the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;Your colleague, my Senator Sherrod Brown, shares that same distinction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think I understand your position on the filibuster.&nbsp;&nbsp;Not only are you a \u201ctraditionalist\u201d in the Senate, unwilling to change that long-standing practice, but you are a political realist as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;There may be a day when the Democrats don\u2019t have control, maybe soon.&nbsp;&nbsp;By opening the door to ending the filibuster, the door is open for Republicans to do the same.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s gaining power now, but perhaps losing critical control later.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no guarantee that Republicans wouldn\u2019t do that anyway, but there are a lot of traditionalists in their caucus too.&nbsp;&nbsp;So I get that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I watched the House January 6th Committee hearing on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;I was struck with the testimony of the policemen, who, regardless of their own political views, did their job to protect the Capitol.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were defending the Capitol, the rule of law, and the Constitutional process of choosing the President.&nbsp;&nbsp;They risked their lives to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In part because of their efforts, the Insurrection failed in its goal of keeping Donald Trump in office.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those officers and the action of most of our legislators stopped the direct result of the \u201cBig Lie\u201d campaign waged throughout the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;But they didn\u2019t stop the \u201cBig Lie\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s still out there, this \u201cBig Lie\u201d cause of the Insurrection.&nbsp;&nbsp;And it\u2019s driving the Republican legislatures throughout the country to change the voting process.&nbsp;&nbsp;Like the REDMAP program a decade ago, this wave of election \u201creforms\u201d will fulfill the Republican goal:&nbsp;&nbsp;minimizing the votes of Democrats, particularly Democrats of color.&nbsp;&nbsp;What wasn\u2019t won in the halls of the Capitol building in January, they are winning in the halls of state capitols throughout the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that is not only a threat to the Democratic candidates.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s a threat to our Democracy writ large.
