{"id":4189,"date":"2021-04-26T09:37:52","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T13:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=4189"},"modified":"2021-04-26T09:37:59","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T13:37:59","slug":"our-turn-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2021\/04\/26\/our-turn-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Turn Now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>\u201cOhio has been moving away from Democrats in such a significant way<\/em>\u201d \u2013 Kasey Hunt,&nbsp;<em>MSNBC<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brutally Red<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hey Ohio, it\u2019s your turn now.\u00a0\u00a0Ohio is a brutally \u201cRed\u201d state in many ways.\u00a0\u00a0There are sections of the state, particularly in the West towards the Indiana border, that are \u201cpure Republican\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0They have been since the Civil War, and nothing will change their voting characteristics.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s a reason that Congressman Jim Jordan isn\u2019t worried about much of anything when it comes to his burgeoning scandal:\u00a0\u00a0he knows that he will have his District\u2019s support, no matter what.\u00a0\u00a0Besides, it will all be \u201cfake news\u201d\u00a0\u00a0and \u201cLib\u201d George Clooney\u2019s movie to them anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Appalachia Ohio, the full quarter of the state south of I-70 and east of SR-23, is politically adrift.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many voters, who used to be \u201cVern Rife Blue Dog Democrats\u201d, have become Trump supporters.&nbsp;&nbsp;And, much like their relatives in West Virginia, they are struggling to see what the Democratic Party has to offer them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that sounds racial, in part it is.&nbsp;&nbsp;But it\u2019s more than just that.&nbsp;&nbsp;Appalachia not only lost its coal mining industry, but was devastated by the opioid epidemic as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;And the government answer, Democratic or Republican, was to shut down the \u201cpill mills\u201d, the pain clinics throughout the Southeastern part of the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;While that stopped the \u201clegal\u201d pill distribution, it did little to deal with the addiction that was created.&nbsp;&nbsp;So those addicts became prey to other forms of illegal drugs, including heroin and fentanyl and homemade crystal meth.&nbsp;&nbsp;Democrats didn\u2019t help, and neither did Republicans, which left those folks to make their political determinations based on the \u201cwedge\u201d issues:&nbsp;&nbsp;abortion, race, guns, and religion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Other than a \u201cliberal bastion\u201d in Athens, home of&nbsp;&nbsp;<s>the<\/s>&nbsp;Ohio University, they choose the GOP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marginally Blue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So if rural Ohio is Republican, and so is Appalachia, that what\u2019s left for Democrats to win?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The votes are in the cities:&nbsp;&nbsp;Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Columbus, Toledo, Dayton, Cincinnati.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s where elections are won and lost in Ohio.&nbsp;&nbsp;And for Democrats they is some semblance of good news.&nbsp;&nbsp;The suburbs surrounding the cities, areas like Delaware County north of Columbus and Warren County north of Cincinnati, are no longer as \u201cred\u201d as they once were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If \u2013 and that\u2019s a HUGE if \u2013 a Democrat could win the cities big, and then break near even in the suburbs \u2013 then the Red West and the marginal Southeast just won\u2019t matter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a recipe for a Democratic win.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s an ongoing problem with Ohio though, and that is the candidates of the Democratic Party have failed to inspire an election turnout among their own voters.\u00a0\u00a0In short, Democrats, even Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, won the cities, but they didn\u2019t bring out the massive numbers of votes required to overcome the rest of the Red state.\u00a0\u00a0Those votes exist \u2013 the registrations prove it.\u00a0\u00a0But they aren\u2019t coming out to vote \u201cBlue\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at Georgia.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even with the voter suppression laws enacted by the State Legislature in the last few months, the Republican Party is still in trouble.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the 2022 election, Georgia is likely to have Senator Raphael Warnock and Stacey Abrams on the ballot \u2013 both dynamic Black candidates that excite Democratic voters.
