It\u2019s been a little while \u2013 but this is the next in the \u201cOutside My Window\u201d series -about life during COVID.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Mission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sunday was the third day of spring.  Jenn and I spent the day working in the back yard; pulling all of the old plants, cutting down the ornamental grasses, cleaning up leftover leaves.  It got hot, for the first time since October, shorts and t-shirts and that first cast of sun burn and tan.  We cleared off our \u201csun deck\u201d, got the furniture arranged and all of the \u201cstuff\u201d that got stored there over the winter put away.  And of course, when we were done, it was a couple of cold ones on the \u201csun deck\u201d in celebration of this first intimation of summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have a new mission.   One day a week we spend driving all over the state delivering and picking up \u201clost dog\u201d equipment:  cameras and live-traps, and also things to help animal rescues.  We took five dog houses to Waverly last week to help improve the conditions for some \u201coutdoor\u201d dogs.  You know it\u2019s spring:  somehow the pickup truck veers towards every high school track as we pass through the small towns of Ohio.  The driver, me, just \u201cwants to see\u201d a track practice \u2013 just for a moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filling in the Hole <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll see plenty of high school track soon enough \u2013 with a white shirt, a flag, and a starting pistol.   April will be full of officiating meets, from middle school dual meets to big invitationals.  Memory is a strange thing \u2013 it seems like I did that last year too.  Of course, I didn\u2019t.  There wasn\u2019t a high school track season last year.  All of \u201clast year\u2019s\u201d memories are really from 2019.  The \u201chole\u201d of 2020 just gets filled in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is my fourth year out of coaching.\u00a0\u00a0There aren\u2019t any kids I coached still on the high school tracks.\u00a0\u00a0Even the young coaches don\u2019t know me other than as an old official.\u00a0\u00a0But I\u2019ve still got a \u201chand in\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve \u201cCovid Coached\u201d a few kids \u2013 using text messages and IPhone videos.\u00a0\u00a0I think we\u2019ve done some good, and it\u2019s been good for me to analyze, discuss and defend my technical positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It was a year ago this week that I took an \u201conline\u201d substitute teaching job, scrambling along with the regular teachers to figure out how to keep \u201cschool\u201d going in the shutdown.  I don\u2019t know that we found a lot of great answers for keeping kids involved in school.  But it wasn\u2019t for lack of effort:  every teacher I know went far and beyond the \u201ccall of duty\u201d to reach out and keep kids involved.  When the world turns upside down, a Zoom class might be the only echo of normalcy in that child\u2019s life.  Looking back, how strange to have your teacher literally \u201cin your bedroom\u201d every day.  No wonder so many kids set Zoom to audio only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll be happy to never Zoom again.  And now, with vaccines and lessening infections, we are all looking to get back to normal.  Normal doesn\u2019t just mean going to a restaurant (last week I sat down in one for the first time in a year), it also means not being \u201caddicted\u201d to 24\/7 television \u201cnews\u201d.  Washington doesn\u2019t demand the need for our attention every day, though there\u2019s still plenty going on.  For the first time in several years, we can look away for a moment and focus on our more local life.  That\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change at the End<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But there are things unalterably changed by our shared year in pandemic hiding.   Jenn and I picked up a third and a fourth dog.  When the yen to go camping hit, we realized that four dogs in our \u201cefficiency camper\u201d wasn\u2019t going to work.  Want to buy a 2017 Rockwood Mini-Lite? There\u2019s one for sale in the driveway.  It was a lot of fun \u2013 spent a winter in Florida and plenty of time in the fall leaves of Ohio.  But now it\u2019s got to go.  After it\u2019s sold, we\u2019ll look for a Class A, a bus, where there\u2019s actual rooms and a place for the dogs to get comfortable while we drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here\u2019s a most unusual essay from me.  It\u2019s about spring, about track, about camping, and about hope.  It\u2019s about the light at the end of the tunnel.  If you\u2019ve never experienced that phrase in real life \u2013 you need to head over to Blackhand Gorge<\/a> just east of Newark, Ohio.  On the North side of the river, there\u2019s a path through on old railroad tunnel \u2013 a relic of the \u201cInterurban\u201d.  That was a train that used to take you from Columbus to Pataskala, Hebron, Buckeye Lake, Newark, and Zanesville.  The tracks are gone, but the carved tunnel through the stone hill remains.  Take a walk \u2013 and there in the center, you will fully understand what \u201ca light at the end of the tunnel\u201d means.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t really see what\u2019s beyond \u201cthe light\u201d \u2013 you don\u2019t know what the next step you take will reveal.  All you can see is the brightness.  But there\u2019s one thing for sure. Out of the damp darkness of a century old tunnel, you know that there\u2019s something better at the end.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
