His Legitimacy, the President-Elect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My Democratic friends tell me to just hang on.\u00a0\u00a0On January 20th<\/sup>, Joe Biden will be inaugurated President of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0Once he\u2019s taken the oath of office, Donald Trump will be out, and everything will be better.\u00a0\u00a0They\u2019re certainly right in one way:\u00a0\u00a0things will be better.\u00a0\u00a0Joe Biden had already demonstrated that his governing goal is something we haven\u2019t seen for the past four years:\u00a0\u00a0competence.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Biden cabinet members (so far) aren’t the \u201cradical socialists\u201d that Republicans threatened.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, if you are on the \u201cleft\u201d of the Democratic Party, so far you haven\u2019t gotten much.\u00a0\u00a0Even Neera Tanden, Biden\u2019s most controversial nominee for the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, is a \u201cmainstream\u201d progressive.\u00a0\u00a0There was plenty of corporate and even foreign money behind her liberal \u201cCenter for American Progress\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the one thing the Biden cabinet \u201cexudes\u201d is the ability to take office and go to work.\u00a0\u00a0They are all experienced and ready to hit the ground running \u2013 and all that means they are eminently qualified and competent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Loser Baby<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump has done everything he can to delegitimize the Biden election.\u00a0\u00a0He has gone to court over fifty times claiming that there was election fraud, and lost almost every case.\u00a0\u00a0And if it was just Donald Trump by himself, we could write it off as \u201csour grapes\u201d and being a \u201csore loser\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s what would have happened in the past, when the \u201cnorms\u201d pushed the losing Presidential candidate to concede the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traditional thinking was: \u00a0\u00a0once a candidate was declared the \u201closer\u201d, they had to move as quickly as possible to end the contest.\u00a0\u00a0If they didn\u2019t then the nation would look at them as that \u201csore loser\u201d, and end any future political career. Think about what happened to Al Gore.\u00a0\u00a0By (legitimately) fighting for the 2000 election in Florida, he knowingly risked his future political life.\u00a0\u00a0If he won he was President.\u00a0\u00a0But when he didn\u2019t, he never got the chance to run again. It wasn\u2019t just a matter of \u201cAmerican tradition\u201d to concede quickly, it was a matter of political survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But like many other areas of American political life, Donald Trump has thrown all of those \u201cnorms\u201d out the window.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

True Believers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are two key factors that make the actions of Donald Trump so different.  The first is that he convinced a significant minority of Americans that the election was stolen.  \u201cStop the Steal\u201d is the new \u201cLock Her Up\u201d chant of the \u201cTrumper\u201d crowd.  And they aren\u2019t being stupid.  All of the information, all of their media reports, everything they see is telling them that \u201ctheir\u201d America is being stolen from them.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can certainly argue that they are getting all of their information from one \u201csilo\u201d.  But that argument isn\u2019t going to fly with them.  Twenty years of high-pressure sales has them convinced that \u201ctheir\u201d sources are correct, and everyone else is watching \u201cfake news\u201d.  And while that\u2019s a battle for some future tomorrow, it\u2019s not a winnable one today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the second factor is there are so few other Republican leaders who are saying, \u201cBiden won\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0In a\u00a0Washington Post<\/a><\/em> questionnaire last week, only twelve of fifty-two Republican Senators acknowledged the Biden victory \u2013 that\u2019s twenty-three percent.\u00a0\u00a0The rest evade or obfuscate or outright deny the will of the American voter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leading from the Rear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So when the Trump crowd chants, \u201cStop the Steal\u201d, where are the leadership figures telling them the truth?   We know better than to expect that anyone in the direct Trump orbit will do so, but what about McConnell or Portman or Cruz or Scott (South Carolina or Florida)?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is they are nowhere to be found.  They all have excuses:  we need Trump voters in Georgia, or, Trump will \u201cTweet\u201d and destroy my political career, or, we can wait until the Electoral Votes are counted, or it won\u2019t matter, everything will be OK on January 20th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It won\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large minority of Americans believes they have been robbed.\u00a0\u00a0They are Americans with the same traditions as the rest of us.\u00a0\u00a0I simply ask my Democratic friends: if they shoe was on the other foot, and we believed with certainty (not like 2016) that the Presidency was stolen and the vote of America ignored, what would we do?\u00a0\u00a0To what lengths would we go to preserve our Democracy?\u00a0\u00a0Would we march in the streets\u00a0\u00a0or refuse to obey government orders?\u00a0\u00a0Would revolution be in the air?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for those who say, just wait until:  the Electoral votes are counted, or Georgia, or the inauguration; I ask, \u201cwho\u2019s gonna tell \u2018em\u201d?  And why, after months of believing, should they listen?  Does anyone see Mitch McConnell standing in front of the riot, like the man before the tanks in Tiananmen Square, saying go home, it\u2019s all OK?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
