{"id":3651,"date":"2020-12-07T09:22:27","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T14:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=3651"},"modified":"2020-12-07T09:22:38","modified_gmt":"2020-12-07T14:22:38","slug":"wwe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2020\/12\/07\/wwe\/","title":{"rendered":"WWE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wrestling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I coached high school track and field for forty years.\u00a0\u00a0And while track and Cross Country were my \u201cprimary sports\u201d, for many of those years I coached wrestling as well.\u00a0\u00a0I started the middle school wrestling program at Watkins Middle School, forty kids on a tiny, hard old mat in the middle of an elementary gym.\u00a0\u00a0We had to take shifts wrestling, with kids doing pushups and sit-ups on the gym floor waiting for a chance to practice on a corner of the  mat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I couldn\u2019t teach throws, when a wrestler would pick up their opponent and (carefully) put them down on the mat.&nbsp;&nbsp;The \u201cpostage stamp\u201d we were wrestling on was too hard.&nbsp;&nbsp;In today\u2019s world of lawsuits we never would wrestled on that mat, but back in the mid 1980\u2019s it\u2019s what we had.&nbsp;&nbsp;And we had a lot of fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In those years there wasn\u2019t a \u201clittle kids\u201d wrestling program.&nbsp;&nbsp;The eighth graders who stepped on our \u201cpostage stamp\u201d were almost all wrestling for the first time.&nbsp;&nbsp;And for many of them, their only exposure to \u201cwrestling\u201d was \u201cprofessional wrestling\u201d they saw on television.&nbsp;&nbsp;They came to their first wrestling practice looking for the ropes and the turnbuckles, what they saw on TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Big Time Wrestling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professional wrestling has been around for a very long time.&nbsp;&nbsp;When my Dad went to work in Dayton at WLW-D television station (now WDTN) in 1962, there was still the big \u201cwarehouse\u201d area in the back of the station with a full sized ring.&nbsp;&nbsp;The travelling \u201cBig Time Wrestling\u201d show would come through town and broadcast \u201clive from the studio\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was the travelling carnival of television.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There isn\u2019t much in common between \u201cprofessional\u201d wrestling and the kind of wrestling we did in middle school.\u00a0\u00a0Professional wrestling is a carefully scripted performance, with the wrestler\/actors knowing their opponent\u2019s next move and how they should react for the greatest spectator excitement.\u00a0\u00a0It has to be.\u00a0\u00a0Jumping from five or six feet up in the air and landing on someone, even on a springy mat, would break ribs, crush organs, and make for a very short career.\u00a0\u00a0Hitting someone with a folding chair in the real world is just short of assault with a deadly weapon.\u00a0\u00a0When you know things \u201cwent wrong\u201d is when someone actually gets hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On Steroids<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today the spectacle of professional wrestling is taken to the extreme.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s called&nbsp;<em>World Wrestling Entertainment<\/em>&nbsp;(WWE), and it\u2019s not just the wrestling-performance. It&#8217;s an entire drama \u2013 from entering the arena, music blaring and special effects going off, to \u201cnon-ring\u201d fights between managers, girlfriends, and even the guest celebrities.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2007, Pre-Presidential Donald Trump got to be \u201cin the ring'&#8221; right after he body slammed WWE President Vince McMahon on the sidelines&nbsp;&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jkghtyxZ6rc\">WWE<\/a>). It\u2019s the \u201cgood guys\u201d versus the \u201cbad guys\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;The good guys are victimized all season by the cheating bad guys \u2013 but usually come back to win at the end of the season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the audience it is a time of suspended disbelief.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sure, if someone did that \u201ceye-gouge\u201d or \u201cflying pancake\u201d in the real world, ambulances and policemen would arrive on the scene.&nbsp;&nbsp;Everyone knows there\u2019s a script, but no one knows what the preordained outcome is.&nbsp;&nbsp;So it\u2019s a show, a performance.&nbsp;&nbsp;We can cheer on the \u201cgood guys\u201d and lustily boo the \u201cbad ones\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donald Trump learned a lot from his friend, WWE President Vince McMahon.&nbsp;&nbsp;He got so much from him, that he appointed Vince\u2019s wife Linda as Administrator of the Small Business Administration.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Trump learned the art of spectacle and suspended disbelief.&nbsp;&nbsp;He understood the clear \u201cblack and white, good versus bad\u201d that attracts WWE\u2019s audience.&nbsp;&nbsp;And critical to understanding his actions today, Donald Trump learned that the \u201cgood guys\u201d are always victims, waiting to \u201cwin\u201d at the end of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may come with some surprise, but Saturday night I watched the entire Trump Rally in Valdosta, Georgia.&nbsp;&nbsp;The President was there to support the Republican candidates for Senate in the January (not June) 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;runoff.&nbsp;&nbsp;But the rally really wasn\u2019t about that.&nbsp;&nbsp;For over one hundred minutes, so long that even&nbsp;<em>Fox News&nbsp;<\/em>cut him off for&nbsp;<em>Judge Jeanine;&nbsp;<\/em>Donald Trump performed exactly as he learned from WWE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump entered to his \u201ctheme song\u201d \u2013\u00a0<em>God Bless the USA!\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>He was the \u201cgood guy\u201d, the victim cheated in the biggest \u201cring\u201d of all.\u00a0\u00a0He complained about the \u201crefs\u201d, the Republican leadership of Georgia who refused to overturn the election.\u00a0The President decried his cheating opponent, the Democrats, with their \u201csuitcases\u201d full of ballots and signatures from the dead. And he didn\u2019t forget to talk about the \u201cother\u201d bad guys outside the ring, the media.\u00a0\u00a0There was the \u201ctraditional boo and flip off\u201d the press section moment. And in the end, he promised that \u201cnext season\u201d he will come back to avenge his loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next Season<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats are constantly amazed that the President can stand in front of an adoring crowd (\u201cWE LOVE YOU\u201d was one on the chants) and tell outright lies for hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s easy to \u201cassume\u201d that the folks there are stupid, or at least deluded.
