Here\u2019s the next in the \u201cOutside My Window\u201d series, chronicling life during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joni Mitchell \u2013 The River<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking in the Dark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0My routine has changed a bit.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m usually an early riser, a habit of decades of teaching, but my recent mornings were coffee, dishes (from the night before) and then onto the keyboard.\u00a0\u00a0But with our \u201crehab\u201d dog addition, there\u2019s now a thirty-minute or so walk added in.\u00a0\u00a0It brings back memories of \u201cdawn-thirty\u201d workouts over the years, but I can\u2019t get moving that fast anymore.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ll work out later, when my sixty-four year old muscles get a little warmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So \u201cLouisiana\u201d and I wander the quiet streets of Pataskala.  We start by starlight, but things brighten as we get through our journey, and it\u2019s almost dawn when we return home.  \u201cLou\u201d feels the early morning stiffness too. As he gets stronger we\u2019re letting him do more.  He\u2019s playing with Atticus and Keelie, two of our other dogs, and Lou\u2019s sore and stiff in the mornings like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we warm along the way.  Lou\u2019s getting the hang of things, no matter which direction I take him, he recognizes when we\u2019re back on our street.  He stops sniffing around, and the pace quickens to a light jog.  Lou knows the way home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decorations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The fall leaves are gone and there\u2019s frost on the grass now.  Tomorrow we\u2019re supposed to get our first snow.  I look forward to Lou encountering that; after all, he\u2019s a Louisiana dog.  All the dogs get excited with the first real snowfall, but for him, it\u2019ll be a whole new experience.  And the political season has changed as well:  it took Christmas decorations going up to get some of the Trump signs down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot more Christmas decorations up than usual in our little neighborhood.  It used to be just a couple of us decorated, but this year, most of the houses have lights or inflatable figures.  This was already a \u201cshort\u201d Christmas season. Thanksgiving was late this year; it\u2019s less than a month before Christmas Day.  And it\u2019s the Christmas of COVID, the end of the Trump Administration:  there are lots of reasons to get decorations up.  We can\u2019t \u201cGather Together\u201d like the old Thanksgiving song, but we can demonstrate our togetherness by decorating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I am still working on the motivation to break out Christmas lights.  Usually I am a traditionalist:  Friday after Thanksgiving, rain or shine, I\u2019ve got the boxes down from the rafters, plugging in to find out which strings of lights somehow were \u201chealed\u201d over the past eleven months.  It\u2019s such a clockwork thing, that the next-door neighbor checked up on me yesterday, wondering where the lights were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re still in the boxes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We won\u2019t pull the \u201cbig tree\u201d out of the rafters either this year.  It doesn\u2019t feel like a \u201cbig tree\u201d year, and with more dogs there\u2019s more dog \u201ccrates\u201d \u2013 not much room for a \u201cbig tree\u201d.  So for this year we purchased a smaller one.  The \u201ctraditional\u201d schedule says that will go up sometime after next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sad Christmas Songs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s easy to get in the \u201csad Christmas song\u201d mood.  After last week, when it seemed like our world \u201cforgot\u201d about COVID, I anticipate that our Thanksgiving \u201cdessert\u201d will be even greater spikes in the disease.  And I watch as Donald Trump seems to be doing everything he can to sabotage the Biden administration.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel assassinated Iran\u2019s premier nuclear scientist yesterday.  It\u2019s not something they would do without clearance from the United States, and it certainly won\u2019t help when Biden tries to reinstitute the Iranian Nuclear Accord.  Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu going to get everything he can before his friend Trump leaves.  And as for Trump:  he can check one more box for future Evangelical Christian support, and mess with Biden in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small Christmas, walking in the pre-dawn darkness \u2013 you\u2019d think Donald Trump is the NEXT President of the United States.  He\u2019s not \u2013 and Joe Biden will be the man to lead us through what may be our darkest hours \u2013 but just before the dawn  (yep \u2013 CSNY reference<\/em>).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I\u2019m going to finish this essay \u2013 and get the ladder out.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a short Christmas season \u2013 and it\u2019s going to snow tomorrow \u2013 so the lights have to go up today!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
