Resistance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I received a message from a former student yesterday.\u00a0\u00a0He is on the opposite side of the political spectrum from me: a Trump supporter and a pro-life advocate. He’s a man who sees protestors as property destroyers.\u00a0\u00a0He believes that folks like me never gave Donald Trump a \u201cchance\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0We were the \u201cResistance\u201d from the beginning, from Muslims bans to Russia, Charlottesville to Ukraine, and finally to COVID.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My student carefully (and respectfully, I think) pointed out the hypocrisy he sees in Joe Biden asking for unity.\u00a0\u00a0And he quietly mocked Sunday\u2019s essay about \u201ctaking back\u201d the flag,\u00a0 Our Flag<\/a><\/em>. We don’t agree, but I\u2019m glad that after four years he\u2019s still reading some of my essays.\u00a0\u00a0I hope he reads this one.\u00a0\u00a0And, he\u2019s not wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did \u201cResist\u201d from the beginning.\u00a0\u00a0My\u00a0first essay<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cTrump World<\/em>\u201d was published on February 10th<\/sup>, 2017, less than a month after the inauguration. We questioned the legitimacy of the 2016 election.\u00a0\u00a0And we rejected the actions of the President from the very, very beginning.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve got over nine hundred essays to prove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legitimacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This wasn\u2019t the first time I saw a Presidency as illegitimate.  In the last couple of weeks there\u2019s been a lot of talk about the election of 2000.  It was between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore (with just enough of a smattering of the Green Party\u2019s Ralph Nader to alter the outcome).  The results were so close, that it came down to an incredibly thin slice of voters in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any mass of numbers, there is always some statistical \u201cmargin of error\u201d. The Electoral College vote came down to Florida\u2019s twenty-five.  Out of almost six million votes cast there, the difference between Bush and Gore was less than six hundred.  It was such a small margin, that it almost fell in that \u201cmargin of error\u201d.  If you re-counted the votes, over and over again, you might get a different outcome each time:  a flip of a coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Republican \u201criot\u201d stopped the re-count in heavily Democratic Miami-Dade County.  The Governor of Florida, George Bush\u2019s brother Jeb, refused to recuse himself from the process.  The entire Florida system seemed rigged for the Republicans, and when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of stopping the count at the moment when it was in Bush\u2019s favor, that sealed the feeling. The Court voted five to four, the five Republican appointees against the four Democratic appointees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earning the Presidency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So many didn\u2019t see George Bush\u2019s Presidency as legitimate.  Folks have \u201cspotty\u201d memories:  few remember the \u201cresistance\u201d to Bush that lasted from January 20th<\/sup> 2001, until September 11th<\/sup>.   But we all remember what happened then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Bush earned his legitimacy as President in the days and weeks after 9-11.  He rose to the challenge from his first speech from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. In those first dark hours after the attack Bush made it clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFreedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended.  The full resources of the federal government are working to assist local authorities, to save lives, and to help the victims of these attacks. Make no mistake: The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0He went on to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, the headquarters of the Strategic Air Command where he met with the National Security Council and then determined to return to the White House against their advice.\u00a0\u00a0We literally watched as Air Force One and the fighter escorts flew home.\u00a0\u00a0They were the only planes in the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the next weeks he spoke at Ground Zero:  \u201cI can hear you! I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you! And the people — and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!\u201d <\/em> But he also spoke at a mosque, making it clear that the United States was waging war against Al Qaeda, not all Muslims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legitimacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After 9-11, America accepted George W. Bush as the legitimate President.  And while many continued to oppose his policies, particularly the CIA\u2019s secret torture campaign and the war in Iraq, Bush won a second term in office.  He earned his Presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump never won the opposition over, not even to the point of being a \u201cloyal opposition\u201d.  Even in a crisis more extreme than 9-11, the COVID crisis, the President never \u201crose to the moment\u201d as George Bush did.  Instead, we now know, he whispered to a reporter that he knew \u201chow bad\u201d COVID was, but wouldn\u2019t tell the American people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So my old student is right.  Donald Trump was resisted from the very beginning, and until the \u201cbitter\u201d end.  But Donald Trump also never \u201crose to the moment\u201d when he could win over the resistance, and bring the American people together.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s up to Joe Biden now.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s clear he\u2019s made it his priority to \u201creunite\u201d America.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s a daunting task:\u00a0\u00a0there\u2019s pressure from the left to move their agenda.\u00a0\u00a0They claim credit for winning Georgia and the \u201cBlue Wall\u201d states.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s pressure from the \u201cright\u201d, the Never-Trump Lincoln Republicans, who claim the same credit, seeing the Biden suburban support in part as their contribution.\u00a0\u00a0And there\u2019s pressure from the \u201cResistance\u201d, who want nothing more than to see the Trump family in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t expect my friend to \u201cfall in line\u201d beneath the flag. And I certainly don\u2019t expect all Americans to support all of Biden\u2019s agenda.\u00a0\u00a0But it\u2019s not about giving Biden \u201ca chance\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It’s up to Biden to prove his legitimacy and win a \u201cloyal opposition\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
