The Experiment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday our nation will make a choice.\u00a0\u00a0There are many reasons to vote FOR Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.\u00a0\u00a0But the essence of the 2020 Presidential election is that we are holding a referendum on the four-year experiment called Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like it or not, America embarked on this experiment in government with his election four years ago as President.\u00a0\u00a0It was a near thing:\u00a0\u00a0Trump lost the popular vote but won the Electoral vote.\u00a0 In the Electoral College, less\u00a0 than 1% of the popular vote in three states determined the outcome. Three states sealed his victory, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.\u00a0 There was no popular \u201cmandate\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Nevertheless, he became the President of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His election was based on the idea that he could run America \u201clike a business\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He projected an image of a dynamic entrepreneur, a billionaire maverick that led us to expect that he might do things differently. We hoped he would \u201ccut to the chase\u201d and get the job done.\u00a0\u00a0We knew he would speak his mind, both publicly and in social media.\u00a0\u00a0And we thought he would change the way \u201cpolitics\u201d was done here in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, after four years of the experiment, lets talk about the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competent Businessman<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The single \u201cpositive\u201d factor in the election of Donald Trump was his competency.\u00a0\u00a0Surely a billionaire must be competent.\u00a0\u00a0But we now know, that competency wasn\u2019t a prerequisite for gaining what he says are his billions.\u00a0\u00a0What has he done?\u00a0\u00a0He wasn\u2019t even able to fulfill his primary campaign promise and get rid of the Affordable Care Act.\u00a0\u00a0He never offered an alternative, only the negative.\u00a0There is no Trump Health Care Plan, just a constant rain of criticism for President Obama\u2019s plan.\u00a0\u00a0It was a key part of his candidacy \u2013 but four years later, he is still unable to get it done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes there is more border wall between Mexico and the United States.\u00a0\u00a0Three hundred miles of wall were built, though two hundred and ninety-five miles of that replaced already existing structures.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s five miles of new wall.\u00a0\u00a0And, as we now know, Mexico didn\u2019t pay for it.\u00a0\u00a0In fact Congress didn\u2019t pay for all of it either.\u00a0\u00a0Much of the money was taken from other sources, including Federal Emergency Management money earmarked for national disasters, $155 million that was made unavailable for relief. (Politifact<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the President definitely did create a tax cut, one that saved a little tax money for many, and a fortune for the very wealthy.\u00a0\u00a0He left the government with an additional trillion dollars of debt, which was magnified by the needs of a nation now in pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0The deficit has grown six trillion dollars under Trump\u2019s \u201ccompetent\u201d leadership (Statista<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimate Crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But the real test of any President is in crisis.\u00a0\u00a0George W. Bush proved his strength after almost three thousand died in the attacks on 9-11, and while we might not agree with his decisions, they were made confidently and moved the nation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Barack Obama had no choice but to demonstrate competence from the beginning of his Presidency, faced with the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.\u00a0\u00a0We are still enjoying the benefits of the Obama economic recovery today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when Donald Trump was faced with the pandemic, his first thoughts were not about the nation, but about getting re-elected.\u00a0\u00a0The pandemic didn\u2019t fit into his campaign strategy of running on a growing economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So instead of \u201chandling\u201d the crisis, he first ignored it, then made sure that someone else (the Governors mostly) were \u201cresponsible\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He took \u201call the credit\u201d and \u201cnone of the blame\u201d for what happened.\u00a0\u00a0His own White House put out recommendations on what the states needed to do to reopen.\u00a0\u00a0But when that science didn\u2019t fit Trump\u2019s need to get re-elected and the states couldn’t reach the recommendations, he undercut both the Governors\u2019 messages and their authority.\u00a0\u00a0Regardless of the virus, opening \u201cthe economy\u201d was so much more important, especially to re-electing Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the virus wasn\u2019t controlled, opening the economy just made things worse.  Just today, 80,000 Americans were diagnosed with COVID.  It\u2019s not just about testing: hospitals all over the nation, from Fargo, North Dakota to El Paso, Texas, are full. And more sickness will ultimately result in more deaths.  About 1000 Americans are dying every day \u2013 a \u201c9-11 level loss\u201d every three days.  It\u2019s been going on since April.  Over 233,000 Americans are dead, and their deaths are on Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Failure of Character<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Incompetence has left us vulnerable to COVID.\u00a0\u00a0But Donald Trump\u2019s lack of character has set American against American. He has defended white supremacists, and ignored the legitimate concerns of minority Americans.\u00a0\u00a0He claims to be the best \u201cPresident for Blacks\u201d since Abraham Lincoln.\u00a0\u00a0But his economy, even before the pandemic, left minorities as vulnerable as they were before.\u00a0\u00a0And since COVID, they are at greater threat from disease, and forced to risk their lives to work.\u00a0\u00a0Being an \u201cessential worker\u201d has become for far too many a euphemism for being forced to risk infection.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Trump accepted the immoral border plan, separating children from their parents.\u00a0\u00a0And he takes no responsibility for the outcome of his plan: 545 children that cannot be reunited with their own mothers and fathers.\u00a0\u00a0He led the United States to commit this atrocity. If any other nation acted that way, we would demand justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump is lacking in character.\u00a0\u00a0He is incompetent.\u00a0\u00a0And COVID has magnified all of these flaws, placing them in full view for the American people.\u00a0\u00a0He has failed the test, and the American people need to show him the door.\u00a0\u00a0Sometime soon, when the vote count concludes, I believe they will.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
