Retired<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Life can get surprisingly busy when you\u2019re retired.  What sounds like an almost unlimited amount of time, soon narrows to a few short hours. In those few hours, Jenn and I need to \u201cmake a new plan, Stan\u201d \u2013 we need to figure out when we are going to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I haven\u2019t missed an election in my life, since I first became eligible for the November election of 1974.\u00a0\u00a0This is my life, a political junkie.\u00a0\u00a0I drove from Granville to vote in Cincinnati when I was an undergraduate, and from Cincinnati to vote in Pataskala when I was in law school.\u00a0\u00a0When I was working, I was one of the first ten in line as the polls opened at the old Pataskala Fire Station, hanging out with a cup of coffee and the \u201c6:15-am bunch\u201d in the cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More recently I\u2019ve dodged the wait and Jenn and I vote around 10:30 am with our fellow retirees.\u00a0\u00a0And we have voted absentee a couple of times.\u00a0\u00a0But this year feels different; we need to vote \u201cin person\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0And I just can\u2019t let it all come down to a single Election Day chance.\u00a0\u00a0What if the car breaks down, or one of us gets COVID, or there\u2019s a \u201cdog emergency\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0We need to get this done, in person, and soon.\u00a0\u00a0We need to make a new plan \u2013 Stan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gone to the Dogs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We have a recent addition to our canine family.\u00a0\u00a0There was already the \u201cbig two rescues\u201d:\u00a0\u00a0Buddy, our eight year-old shepherd\/border collie mix, and Atticus, the wild man three year-old Yellow Lab.\u00a0\u00a0And then we decided to foster Keelie, a skinny one year-old female, at forty-five pounds a mix of Rottweiler and something else.\u00a0\u00a0The foster “failed:”\u00a0\u00a0she was too good and fit in too well.\u00a0\u00a0She became the \u201csister\u201d Buddy and Atticus never had and the third dog I didn\u2019t think I wanted.\u00a0\u00a0I was wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that\u2019s not the new addition.\u00a0\u00a0Now we are rehabbing two year-old Louisiana, better known as Lou.\u00a0\u00a0He’s a shepherd\/Dane mix and was a rescue from the parking lot of the Louisiana State University Vet Clinic that Jenn and a couple of her Lost Pet Recovery (LPR) mates drove through the night to recover. They knew he had two broken legs, but only later discovered a broken hip as well.\u00a0\u00a0Thanks to LPR he\u2019s now surgically repaired, and hanging out in Jenn\u2019s office on the mend.\u00a0\u00a0We haven\u2019t allowed him to meet the other three yet (they can be overwhelming) but he knows they are there, and everyone desperately wants a sniff and to say \u201chello\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lou requires a lot of attention.  There are drugs for pain, and separation anxiety from abandonment.  He\u2019s a sweet guy (\u201cSweet Louisiana\u201d \u2013 has a ring to it).  He wants to play and snuggle, but he\u2019s still fragile from all of the damage and the surgeries.  Jenn can\u2019t go too far, and when she does I\u2019m only a slightly above average substitute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Plan <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jenn and I want to vote together.\u00a0\u00a0This is the most important vote of our lives, something we want to share \u2013 just as we shared the shock of November 2016, and will sweat out the 2020 returns in a couple of weeks.\u00a0\u00a0So balancing Lou, the rest of the crew, my growing addiction to pounding out 1000 words each morning, workouts, cross country meets and all the rest of life has somehow gotten complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, Stan (whoever Stan was) here\u2019s our new plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lou\u2019s got a vet appointment in Dublin, Ohio at 8:30 am today.\u00a0\u00a0Travelling with him, it\u2019s best to have both of us, one to drive, one to snuggle with Lou.\u00a0\u00a0The rest of the gang will be happy to go back to sleep when we leave at 7:30 am.\u00a0\u00a0So it\u2019s over to Dublin and hang out while they check out Lou\u2019s progress \u2013 then head to Newark and vote in person at the Board of Elections downtown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Duty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We get it done:  no worry about the mail, or disaster on Election Day.  And the vote is actually \u201ccast\u201d \u2013 so no worries about when it gets counted.  Our two votes matter, and timing matters too in our time when we don\u2019t know what \u201cshenanigans\u201d the Trump campaign or others may pull.  Police are worrying about armed Trump supporters in the parking lots of polling places.  Everyone should be worried about attempts to hack into our electoral process.  Russia did it in 2016, there\u2019s no reason to believe they won\u2019t try again in 2020. There is so much that can happen to disrupt the system.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I\u2019ll hang out in the truck with Lou while Jenn goes and casts her ballot, then she\u2019ll do the same for me.\u00a0\u00a0And then, no matter what else happens in the next two weeks, we have fulfilled that most important duty for Americans.\u00a0\u00a0We voiced our decision.\u00a0\u00a0We took a stand. And we chose our future.\u00a0\u00a0We voted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the new plan, Stan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Post Script<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
