Vice Presidential Debate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I listened intently to the Vice Presidential Debates last night.\u00a0\u00a0Unlike the week before, it was a \u201ctraditional\u201d American political debate.\u00a0\u00a0The candidates tried to make their points, pointedly ignored the questions they didn\u2019t want to answer, and interacted only occasionally.\u00a0\u00a0Vice President Pence, as the only man on the dais, was likely to be accused of\u00a0\u00a0\u201cmansplaining\u201d no matter what.\u00a0\u00a0But he consistently ignored moderator Susan Page\u2019s cues that his time was up. And he was quietly condescending to his opponent the Senator from California. That proved the point anyway.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cfly\u201d may have been the highlight of the night.  The fact that an insect could land on the Vice President\u2019s head, and stay there for minutes, showed how unanimated the debate really was.  But for those parents who were horrified when their children watched the Presidential debates last week (it was only last week), this was one where the kids could at least hear a coherent difference of opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My summary analysis is that the Vice Presidential debate probably didn\u2019t change many minds.\u00a0\u00a0Mike Pence did his \u201cjob\u201d defending the President, and managed to get his \u201chit\u201d lines out about the \u201cGreen New Deal\u201d and Senator Harris\u2019s \u201cliberal\u201d voting record.\u00a0\u00a0And Kamala Harris did her job as well, explaining the Biden\/Harris plan clearly, and showing the \u201cgravitas\u201d that the running mate of the seventy-seven year old Biden needs to have.\u00a0\u00a0Just as Pence is a Vice President from \u201ccentral casting\u201d, so Harris definitely showed she could be the first woman to be next in line for the Presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super-Spreader<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere buried in the Vice President\u2019s syrupy responses was one regarding the COVID \u201csuper-spreader\u201d event at the White House, when President Trump announced the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett for the Supreme Court.  In the very \u201ctraditional\u201d Rose Garden ceremony, chairs were set close together and most attendees eschewed wearing facemasks.  Thirty-four COVID cases have been traced to the White House, with many of them sitting in that close packed crowd in the Rose Garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vice President said that the ceremony was \u201coutdoors\u201d as government scientists recommended.\u00a0\u00a0He never really responded to the lack of masks, the shoulder-to-shoulder seating, or the casual handshakes, hugs, and head to head conversations that took place.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Pence did emphasize that the Administration believes in \u201cfreedom\u201d. \u201cWe are about freedom and the freedom of the American people<\/em>,\u201d he said. His point was that Americans have the \u201cfreedom to decide\u201d what they want to do about the pandemic, and the \u201cgovernment\u201d shouldn\u2019t regulate their behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a Word<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This fits completely with the Trump COVID strategy.\u00a0\u00a0The President has spent the last six months undermining America\u2019s faith in scientific findings.\u00a0\u00a0He has forced the doctors \u201cin charge\u201d of the COVID crisis to change their public opinions. He even made them claim they made errors in judgment, in order to fit his theme.\u00a0\u00a0Donald Trump has set a national example of ignoring precautions, including his latest theatrical display of ripping his mask off.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gave Governors the \u201cfreedom\u201d to decide how to respond to the COVID crisis. But almost immediately began to criticize those Governors that took action to try to stem the spread.\u00a0\u00a0He politicized their efforts, making COVID regulations into \u201cDemocrat\u201d and \u201cRepublican\u201d responses.\u00a0\u00a0Even today, mask wearing and your choice for President are closely correlated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now Mike Pence argues that they are doing all of that for \u201cfreedom\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Americans should be \u201cfree\u201d to decide how they individually respond to COVID.\u00a0\u00a0And when the White House held an event that violated all of the \u201crules”, it was the participants \u201cfree\u201d choice to be there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom Ends at My Face<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The problem is that COVID is not a \u201cfree speech\u201d issue.  It isn\u2019t a \u201cchoice\u201d.  The virus will do what the virus does:  spread, infect, sicken and in some cases kill.  The President is exercising his \u201cfreedom\u201d to ignore quarantine rules, wandering the White House without a mask.  Workers there aren\u2019t \u201cfree\u201d to avoid the viral spread and do their jobs. The President is essentially forcing the virus on them.  Someone is going to die, and it\u2019s dying for the \u201cfreedom\u201d of Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that summarizes what the Trump Administration wants America to do.\u00a0\u00a0They want us to \u201cbe free\u201d to go to restaurants, crowd into bars, buy the cheap cruise ship tickets. We should “be free”to essentially act as if the COVID pandemic isn\u2019t here.\u00a0\u00a0Like the non-existent Trump Health Care Plan, the President wants us to depend on a still non-existent \u201ccure\u201d and a non-existent vaccine.\u00a0If we are \u201cfree\u201d from the basic rules of pandemic, over a century old, then that will make the short-term economy better. And since short-term gains are the only thing left to get Trump re-elected, he demands that we be \u201cfree\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFreedom\u2019s just another word for nothing left to lose\u201d.  <\/em>And that\u2019s what the President and Vice President face today:  nothing left to lose in leading America to continuing pandemic disaster.  By using \u201cfreedom\u201d as their guidon, their banner, they are leading us to more infection and death.  At least Americans are free to make that choice in November. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
