Katy Tur cuts off questioners, Andrea Mitchell hints at inside knowledge she can\u2019t reveal, Craig Melvin jovially asks the tough questions, and Joe Scarborough&#8217;s harangues are reminiscent of \u201cI\u2019m as mad as Hell and I\u2019m not going to take it anymore,\u201d from the movie\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZwMVMbmQBug\"><em>Network<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I know folks will say that listening to&nbsp;<em>MSNBC&nbsp;<\/em>will \u201crot your brain\u201d or \u201cgrow hair on your hands\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;They\u2019ll argue that it is&nbsp;<em>Fox News&nbsp;<\/em>inverted. Folks claim we only hear one side of an argument, just more confirmation bias for views we already have.&nbsp;&nbsp;And there is some truth to that, except for the hair part.&nbsp;&nbsp;But in the background there is <em>NBC News.<\/em>  <em>&nbsp;<\/em>They bring the latest breaking news and send their best to find out what\u2019s going on.&nbsp;&nbsp;For proof of that, check out Jacob Soboroff\u2019s work on child separation on the border, or Julia Ainsley\u2019s insights into national intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we balance it with a large dose of print journalism.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sure we read the&nbsp;<em>New York Times&nbsp;<\/em>and the&nbsp;<em>Washington Post,&nbsp;<\/em>but there\u2019s also the&nbsp;<em>Wall Street Journal&nbsp;<\/em>and the daily&nbsp;<em>Associated Press&nbsp;<\/em>feed.&nbsp;&nbsp;And there\u2019s local television news too, delivered with a joke, a smile, and a right-wing bias from Fox and the ubiquitous Sinclair Broadcasting Corporation.&nbsp;&nbsp;If that doesn\u2019t tilt the scales to balance, nothing will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">News was News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I grew up with NBC\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Huntley\/Brinkley News<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It wasn\u2019t even a question in our house.&nbsp;Dad ran a television station that was an&nbsp;<em>NBC&nbsp;<\/em>affiliate<em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Chet Huntley or David Brinkley told us the story of our times, from the Kennedy assassinations, to Vietnam, to the moon landing.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were our bridge to the bigger world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that era led us to believe that the news we received was straight, an unbiased report of what was going on.&nbsp;&nbsp;When&nbsp;<em>CBS&nbsp;<\/em>legend Walter Cronkite came out against the Vietnam War, it was so powerful because it was so unusual:&nbsp;&nbsp;the anchor took  a political stand.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we also knew television \u201cpersonalities\u201d that put their own views on the air.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dad started the&nbsp;<em>Phil Donahue Show&nbsp;<\/em>at WLW-D in Dayton.  Phil\u2019s first show featured renowned atheist Madelyn Murray O\u2019Hare, one of the named complainants in the Supreme Court case against prayer in school.&nbsp;&nbsp;Phil was an unabashed liberal, and his show examined topics that weren\u2019t part of the \u201cpolite\u201d conversation of the time.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dad wasn\u2019t anywhere near Phil politically, a \u201cRockefeller Republican\u201d himself, but knew good business when he saw it.&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;<em>Donahue Show&nbsp;<\/em>grew to two hundred and twenty-five markets across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It shouldn\u2019t have been a surprise that when&nbsp;<em>NBC&nbsp;<\/em>decided to try to establish a cable channel to compete against&nbsp;<em>Fox,&nbsp;<\/em>they went for a \u201cprogressive\u201d bias.&nbsp;&nbsp;And Donahue, retired from his own show after twenty-six years, was one of the early <em>MSNBC&nbsp;<\/em>hosts.&nbsp;&nbsp;He only lasted six months:&nbsp;&nbsp;even&nbsp;<em>MSNBC&nbsp;<\/em>wouldn\u2019t permit a host who was against the Iraq War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Astride the Middle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are the \u201ccrossover\u201d hosts, the&nbsp;<em>NBC News&nbsp;<\/em>figures who came over to&nbsp;<em>MSNBC.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>While it might seem \u201cnatural\u201d for Chuck Todd, the host of&nbsp;<em>Meet the Press&nbsp;<\/em>to have a daily show on&nbsp;<em>MSNBC,&nbsp;<\/em>it\u2019s not an easy fit.&nbsp;&nbsp;Todd is from the tradition of&nbsp;<em>Meet the Press,&nbsp;<\/em>the longest running television show in history at seventy-three years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<em>MTP&nbsp;<\/em>has always been about tough questions by tough reporters, but without the more open \u201cbias\u201d that other&nbsp;<em>MSNBC<\/em> hosts show.&nbsp;&nbsp;Chuck Todd stands in place of the legendary Tim Russert.  Russert dominated political reporting in the early 2000\u2019s from the&nbsp;<em>NBC&nbsp;<\/em>Washington news bureau, dying of a heart attack at his desk.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tim was biased for only two things, the Buffalo Bills football team, and his father.&nbsp;&nbsp;Todd has taken a similar approach, though his loyalty is to the Miami Florida teams and the Washington Nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Todd is not popular with the \u201cprogressive\u201d set.&nbsp;&nbsp;They say he \u201csoftballs\u201d the Republicans, and hits hard against the Democrats.&nbsp;&nbsp;I disagree.&nbsp;&nbsp;My evaluation is that he asks the \u201ctough\u201d questions of each side, allows everyone to have their say, and follows-up with insightful responses.&nbsp;&nbsp;What he does do, is let folks from either side of the political spectrum tell their story.&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s what the \u201cprogressive\u201d side has a problem with.&nbsp;&nbsp;They don\u2019t want to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Room at the Center<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Todd\u2019s weekday show,\u00a0<em>Meet the Press Daily,\u00a0<\/em>has been moved from a prime slot at 5:00 pm, to one in the  early afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0<em>MSNBC\u00a0<\/em>says it\u2019s about\u00a0<em>MTP Daily&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>falling ratings.  They gave former Bush operative Nicolle Wallace two hours from 4 to 6 leading into the evening lineup.\u00a0\u00a0And I\u2019m sure that\u2019s true.\u00a0\u00a0I love Nicolle, and her brand of never-Trumpism.\u00a0\u00a0But there\u2019s no veil of objectivity there, she has made it clear that she is a \u201cLincoln Project\u201d former Republican at the very least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Todd remains the host of Sunday\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Meet the Press,&nbsp;<\/em>going across the entire&nbsp;<em>NBC<\/em>&nbsp;network. But there\u2019s a more important political phenomena going on, and it\u2019s not just on&nbsp;<em>MSNBC.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Chuck Todd represents the center, a newsman trying to allow both sides to have a say.&nbsp;&nbsp;But the market for that kind of news, particularly on&nbsp;<em>MSNBC, &nbsp;<\/em>is shrinking<em>&nbsp;<\/em>(or on&nbsp;<em>Fox,&nbsp;<\/em>ask Shepard Smith or embattled Chris Wallace).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s because the \u201cmiddle\u201d of the political spectrum is shrinking nationwide.\u00a0\u00a0As our country gets closer to the seminal election of 2020, the battle lines are drawn.\u00a0\u00a0Polarization;\u00a0\u00a0forcing everyone to choose, is quickly squeezing folks out of the middle.\u00a0\u00a0We see it at\u00a0<em>MSNBC\u00a0<\/em>with Chuck Todd, but we also see it in our daily lives.\u00a0\u00a0The friends we have that were \u201csoft\u201d on President Trump, perhaps supporting him but willing to see his flaws, are now hardened.\u00a0\u00a0They no longer question his actions:\u00a0\u00a0Trump 2020 is now all about  loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Elections are \u201cbinary choices\u201d (excepting  Jo Jorgenson and Kanye West).&nbsp;&nbsp;Of course once folks make their choice, they become aggressive in defending it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But our current polarized world seems so much more than that.&nbsp;&nbsp;Whether it\u2019s the news channel you watch, wearing a mask at the store, or conversations you can have at dinner, everyone\u2019s side has hardened.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many of our friends disagree with us politically.  But while we used to be able to discuss it, now, the best we can do is stay silent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s  world doesn\u2019t favor those in the middle.
