{"id":2952,"date":"2020-05-31T08:33:18","date_gmt":"2020-05-31T12:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=2952"},"modified":"2020-05-31T08:33:24","modified_gmt":"2020-05-31T12:33:24","slug":"godspeed-dude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2020\/05\/31\/godspeed-dude\/","title":{"rendered":"Godspeed &#8211; Dude!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> <em>This weekend American cities were wracked with riots.  Legitimate protests over the death of George Floyd spilled into confrontations with authority and vandalism.  While the fires raged in Minneapolis and other towns, other Americans achieved a new first &#8211; private industry sent Americans into space.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Americans in Space<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The American manned space program didn\u2019t start off well.\u00a0\u00a0The Russian program launched their first satellite, <em>Sputnik<\/em>, in 1957.\u00a0\u00a0The United States tried to catch up, launching <em>Explorer I<\/em> three months later.\u00a0\u00a0Russia moved ahead following up with the first man in space and in orbit, Yuri Gagarin in April of 1961.\u00a0\u00a0Meanwhile the American rocket, <em>Vanguard<\/em>, had lots of problems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan Shepard was selected to be the first American Astronaut in space.\u00a0\u00a0After the <em>Vanguard <\/em>rocket failed, he rode a tested but smaller military rocket, the <em>Redstone<\/em>, on a sub-orbital flight lasting a little over fifteen minutes in May of 1961.\u00a0\u00a0The second American, Gus Grissom, launched in July, but still was using the <em>Redstone\u2019s<\/em> sub-orbital power.\u00a0\u00a0Both Shepard and Grissom\u2019s flights were successful, though Grissom\u2019s capsule unfortunately flooded and sunk after he was rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile the Russians launched a second man into orbit, Ghreman Titov.\u00a0\u00a0He did seventeen orbits of the earth before returning safely.\u00a0\u00a0It wasn\u2019t until the following February, on a different, more powerful <em>Atlas <\/em>rocket, that the United States launched John Glenn into space, and orbit.\u00a0\u00a0While his flight had difficulties and was cut short, he did manage to orbit the earth three times before returning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only the insiders at NASA knew the risks that Glenn faced with the untested Atlas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Scott Carpenter, Glenn\u2019s astronaut backup, was \u201ccap-com\u201d; capsule communicator for Glenn\u2019s mission.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was the voice that Glenn, and America, heard communicating throughout the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Glenn\u2019s rocket left the Launchpad at Cape Canaveral, Carpenter intoned the phrase:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cGodspeed John Glenn\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0It became the watchword for the original <em>Mercury<\/em> Astronauts and NASA, as well as for John Glenn himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moon and Shuttle&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The race with Russia went on, and several Astronauts on both sides were sacrificed.\u00a0\u00a0But seven years later, in the turmoil filled year of 1968, it was three Americans who first orbited the Moon in<em> Apollo 8<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0On Christmas Eve Astronauts Borman, Lovell and Anders read the first Book of Genesis to the people of earth, as we watched the Earth itself rise above the lunar landscape.\u00a0\u00a0Seven months later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed <em>Apollo 11<\/em> on the surface, the first of six successful moon explorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After<em> Apollo<\/em>, the US space program turned its focus to a more mundane but important project:\u00a0\u00a0building a reusable vehicle to work in space.\u00a0\u00a0The Space <em>Shuttle<\/em> program began in 1981 with five shuttle vehicles, and continued for over thirty years.\u00a0\u00a0Shuttles were launched and returned 133 times.\u00a0\u00a0There were two catastrophic failures, with the loss of the <em>Challenger<\/em> and <em>Columbia<\/em> vehicles and their crews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last <em>Shuttle<\/em> launch was in July of 2011.\u00a0\u00a0Since then, almost nine years, the United States has been shut out of space, hitching rides to the <em>International Space Station<\/em> on Russian rockets and capsules.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free Enterprise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2011, the United States Government contracted out the space program.\u00a0\u00a0NASA still oversees civilian space flight, but instead of purchasing the rockets, capsules and equipment and using them, they now contract with companies to carry NASA personnel and equipment into space.\u00a0\u00a0Two companies, Elon Musk\u2019s (Tesla) <em>SpaceX<\/em> and traditional aeronautics giant <em>Boeing<\/em>, built competing products.\u00a0\u00a0NASA awards contracts to each, allowing them access to the Kennedy Space Center testing, assembly and launch facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>SpaceX<\/em> won the first race, to get a human payload-ready space vehicle in place.\u00a0\u00a0Like Musk\u2019s Tesla cars, the SpaceX rocket, is designed to look sleek and modern.\u00a0\u00a0Even the names are cool:\u00a0\u00a0the <em>Falcon Rocket<\/em>, and the <em>Dragon<\/em> space vehicle.\u00a0\u00a0The <em>Falcon<\/em> even returns to earth, landing gently just offshore of the Cape on a drone piloted barge named \u201c<em>Of Course I Still Love You<\/em>\u201d for re-use for future missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Space &#8211; Dude<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Spacesuits have changed since the silver metallic of the <em>Mercury <\/em>days and the bright white Michelin suits of <em>Apollo<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Even the orange \u201ctest flight\u201d suits of the <em>Shuttle <\/em>days are gone.\u00a0\u00a0The two astronauts launched by the <em>SpaceX<\/em> team are wearing something closer to Star Wars Storm Trooper with a cooler helmet.\u00a0\u00a0Except for the boots, which look like a cross between Doc Marten and Wellington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the grizzled Astronauts and engineers who spoke for NASA are now young \u201cmillennial something\u2019s \u201c in casual <em>SpaceX<\/em> sportswear.\u00a0\u00a0The launch was cool, and so are the folks talking about it.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the California laidback style, \u201c\u2026of course it all works, Dude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after nine years, two Americans are back in space in their own \u201cride\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0They are headed to the<em> International Space Station<\/em>, but they\u2019ll get a \u201cnap\u201d along the way: it\u2019s a nineteen hour pursuit to meet the station in low earth orbit, so there\u2019s an eight hour sleep cycle scheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as the <em>Falcon Rocket<\/em> cleared Launch Complex 39-A, home of the <em>Apollo<\/em> and <em>Shuttle<\/em> Launches, the <em>SpaceX<\/em> announcer gave the NASA invocation with an informal twist: \u201cGodspeed, Doug and Ben!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome back America!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend American cities were wracked with riots.
