Five Days<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The next five days are critical for Senator Bernie Sanders.\u00a0\u00a0Tomorrow\u2019s South Carolina primary will determine whether Sanders\u2019 current major competitor, Joe Biden, remains a viable candidate for President.\u00a0\u00a0If Biden has a big win in South Carolina, he can move on.\u00a0\u00a0Less than that, Biden\u2019s funds will dry up, and his candidacy will end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then on Tuesday, Sanders faces the power of the \u201calmighty dollar\u201d in Mike Bloomberg.  How Sanders, Biden and Bloomberg fair in the seventeen state election will give everyone a more accurate view into the Democratic race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know, I haven\u2019t mentioned Warren, or Klobuchar, or Buttigieg.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t see a way for them to proceed, unless Tuesday\u2019s results are so fractured that no one is advanced.\u00a0\u00a0If that is the case, then Democrats are in for a wild ride, and a divided convention.\u00a0\u00a0Folks talk about Sander\u2019s candidacy resembling George McGovern in 1972. But that fragmented result might be more like the riot-filled convention in Chicago in 1968.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super Stupid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/em>published an article this week about Democratic Party Officials using \u201csuper delegates\u201d to stop Sanders at the convention, if he can\u2019t win on the first ballot (NYT<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a stupid thing for them to be talking about.\u00a0\u00a0The election is now, and the \u201cnarrative\u201d hasn\u2019t been written yet.\u00a0\u00a0If there is one thing that will motivate Sanders\u2019 voters, it\u2019s the shadow of the \u201cDNC\u201d trying to put its thumb on the convention scale.\u00a0\u00a0Many Sanders\u2019 supporters are convinced that happened in 2016.\u00a0\u00a0Even if the Democratic leaders are doing exactly that, they need to shut-up about it now before they create a self-fulfilling prophecy of Sanders\u2019 success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s what should happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Revolution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bernie Sanders has based had candidacy on creating a \u201crevolution\u201d that will carry him to the Presidency.\u00a0\u00a0Sanders has been very clear:\u00a0\u00a0for his programs to move forward, he will need the House and the Senate to join in.\u00a0\u00a0As Angelica Schuyler sings in the musical\u00a0Hamilton: \u201c<\/em>\u2026you want a revolution?\u00a0\u00a0I want a revelation!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The revelation that Sanders need to demonstrate to the Democratic Party:\u00a0\u00a0his \u201crevolution\u201d really exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A revolution requires an army of followers.  Senator Sanders has promised that he will bring a whole new cadre of voters to the polls, voters that haven\u2019t been part of the electorate in the past.  He promises the young, the Millennials, and the disaffected.  That\u2019s how revolutions work, and it\u2019s what Bernie has preached for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now is his chance.  Prove the \u201cRevolution.\u201d  Bring this whole new constituency to the polls, and win.  If the Senator can do this, there won\u2019t be a question about wining the nomination on the first ballot.  He will have an overwhelming majority in the convention, and the super delegates won\u2019t have the chance to influence the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there won\u2019t be the fear that Sanders is the \u201cnext\u201d George McGovern, a man who won only one state in the landslide Presidential defeat of 1972.  If there is a \u201crevolution\u201d then the revolutionaries will show up in November, and the loss of \u201cNever-Trump\u201d votes on the \u201cright\u201d won\u2019t cripple Democratic candidates.  There will be a \u201cblue tsunami\u201d of millennial voters, new to the fight, lifting Democrats to the Presidency, and control of the Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Place Your Bet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Senator Sanders is asking Democrats to go \u201call-in.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0He wants the Party to support his brand of Democratic-Socialism, going farther \u201cleft\u201d then ever before.\u00a0\u00a0And he\u2019s doing it at a time of the greatest risk to American democracy:\u00a0\u00a0Donald Trump.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senator Sanders only earns the right to place that bet, if he can bring new voters to the table.\u00a0\u00a0There is no \u201ccredit\u201d available in this game, he\u2019s got to prove the \u201cgoods\u201d.\u00a0The proof is simple:\u00a0\u00a0he either has the votes and the delegates to win on the first ballot, or he doesn\u2019t.\u00a0\u00a0If he can\u2019t win on the first ballot, than he has failed to prove the \u201crevolution\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0That failure would show Democrats that his gamble won\u2019t pay off.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
