{"id":2273,"date":"2019-09-05T09:36:53","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T13:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=2273"},"modified":"2019-09-05T09:36:59","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T13:36:59","slug":"pants-on-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2019\/09\/05\/pants-on-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Pants on Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was just beginning to write essays for\u00a0<em>Trump World\u00a0<\/em>in February of 2017. In those early days, I was trying to explain Trump to my Progressive friends, still reeling from the 2016 election results.\u00a0\u00a0One of those early essays, called<a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2017\/02\/10\/liar-liar-liar\/\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2017\/02\/10\/liar-liar-liar\/\">Liar Liar Liar<\/a>,<\/em> tried to analyze the Trump organization\u2019s relationship to the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative Facts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we are, two and a half years later, and that relationship hasn\u2019t changed.\u00a0\u00a0The President built his political foundation on the phrase \u201cfake news.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0If no one can tell what the truth is, then people will only believe what the leader \u201cthey\u201d support tells them. The President has flat out stated:\u00a0<em>\u201cJust remember: What you\u2019re seeing and what you\u2019re reading is not what\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Combined with the confirmation of a major \u201cnews\u201d organization, Fox \u201cNews,\u201d and a whole other universe of \u201calternative facts\u201d gets created. (Thanks Kelly-Ann, for that contribution to the American political phraseology.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shooter was a Democrat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week is a great example.&nbsp;&nbsp;It started with the shootings in Odessa, Texas, when seven people were killed and dozens wounded by a random shooter.&nbsp;&nbsp;Within hours of the deaths, Twitter was alive with \u201cfacts.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The shooter had a \u201cBeto for Senate\u201d bumper sticker on his truck.\u00a0<\/li><li>He was a registered Democrat and a Democratic Socialist.<\/li><li>He was a member of Antifa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was all fabricated.\u00a0 The Trump Administration didn\u2019t create these falsehoods. But, Anthony Shaffer, a former DIA officer and a member of the Trump 2020 Campaign Advisory Board, lent them credence by re-tweeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was caught up in those same lies from one of my Facebook \u201cfriends\u201d posts.\u00a0\u00a0When a \u201cSnopes\u201d fact check didn\u2019t reveal an immediate response (it was too soon,) I worried that somehow they were true, and would be used to turn back efforts for gun controls.\u00a0\u00a0I didn\u2019t respond on Facebook, the reality that there are crazed folks with all kinds of political views, including ones similar to mine, was too real to mention.\u00a0\u00a0It shouldn\u2019t be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the lies did exactly what they were supposed to do.\u00a0\u00a0They helped smother the debate. Here was  a man, acknowledged by his neighbors to be \u201cscary and angry.\u201d He could not legally pass a weapons background check, and sat on his rooftop at night and shot at animals. Yet, he was allowed to have a weapon of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China Invades Ohio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second example isn\u2019t even related to Trump, but it is a great example of how absolute falsehood has become our modern political tool.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here in Ohio, the Republican legislature and Governor have just passed \u201cenergy\u201d legislation, rolling back conservation incentives, and pouring money into the failing company running Ohio\u2019s nuclear power plants.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opponents of the legislation, a strange amalgam of environmentalists and the natural gas industry, are trying to gain enough signatures to put the legislation up for vote on a statewide ballot.\u00a0\u00a0The nuclear power folks, who won in the state legislature, are paying for an advertising blitz on statewide television.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0The commercials claim that those passing the petitions are working for China, they show videos of marching Chinese soldiers, President Xi, and Red Flags; and claim that China will interfere in Ohio\u2019s politics and energy production.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t sign the petition\u201d they demand, as if the Chinese secret police will be pounding on your door with paper and pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does China really have to do with any of this?\u00a0\u00a0Some of the natural gas industry plants in the state have financing that includes Chinese banks.\u00a0\u00a0So, by the way, is some of the financing for Direct Energy, the nuclear power company.\u00a0And, of course, so are trillions of dollars of the US debt, sold to China by the\u00a0\u00a0US Treasury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the \u201cRed Scare\u201d tactic, creating a complete fictional story about \u201cChinese hands\u201d on Ohio\u2019s power switches.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Magic Marker Hurricanes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some may say this is just \u201cpolitics as usual.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;But even the most outlandish campaigns usually have some casual relationship to the truth, some tenuous connection to reality.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, in this \u201cgrand example\u201d of the President\u2019s \u201cfake news,\u201d the nuclear industry is following the classic propaganda technique:&nbsp;&nbsp;if you\u2019re going to lie, tell a big one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our third example is directly from the President\u2019s hand.\u00a0\u00a0As Hurricane Dorian was grinding away the northern Bahamas, stalled precariously off of the US coast, the President warned folks, including in the state of Alabama, about the dangers.\u00a0\u00a0The problem was, there was no danger to Alabama; projected tracks for the storm did not include them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a mistake, while extremely early tracks from a week before included a possible move across Florida, all of the more recent projections showed Dorian headed up the Atlantic coast.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was a mistake the President could have explained, corrected, and moved past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is the era of Trump.\u00a0\u00a0In yesterday\u2019s \u201cnews opportunity\u201d with the President, he presented an older map, complete with a Magic Marker addition to Dorian\u2019s projected course.\u00a0It couldn\u2019t have been more obvious, the President added his \u201cprojection\u201d so that he could claim to be right.\u00a0Asked about this, Trump followed his own \u201crules.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0He doubled down on his mistake, claiming that the Weather Service would put out a more detailed map showing him right.\u00a0\u00a0The Weather Service chose not to answer questions about the mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Believe Your Lying Eyes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a lie, an obvious one, and a foolish one.\u00a0\u00a0But, to a substantial portion of the American electorate, it is believed.\u00a0\u00a0They are conditioned:\u00a0\u00a0listen to the President, ignore the \u201cfake news\u201d that calls him to task.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s tough to argue with his success.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham Lincoln said:&nbsp;\u201c\u2026you can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can\u2019t fool all of the people, all of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s hope Lincoln&#8217;s right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was just beginning to write essays for\u00a0Trump World\u00a0in February of 2017.
