Meta-Data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Don’t be surprised if you haven\u2019t heard of “meta-data analytics\u201d or a company that does it, Palantir.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a highly financed, high-tech computer company in Silicon Valley, California.\u00a0But you might recognize the \u201cmoney man\u201d behind it, Peter Thiel, who made his first fortune with\u00a0PayPal, and was the first outside investor in\u00a0Facebook.\u00a0 \u00a0He still holds a seat on\u00a0Facebook\u2019s board of directors and is known for pursuing his conservative\/libertarian agenda. And he sure has the money to do it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thiel combined with financier Joe Lonsdale to develop\u00a0Palantir.\u00a0\u00a0They found a \u201cniche:” using meta-data analytics to aid the US Government.\u00a0\u00a0The military, intelligence and police agencies use Palantir to sift through mountains of data.\u00a0\u00a0They gather the information: searching for criminals, spies, and individuals inside and outside the United States. One big success: \u00a0Palantir\u2019s programs helped the US military track down\u00a0bin Laden<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patriots or Traitors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing inherently wrong with a company helping the United States government achieve its mission.\u00a0There are lots of companies doing it:\u00a0Boeing,\u00a0KBR, and\u00a0General Dynamics to name just a few.\u00a0\u00a0And while we can argue about how much they profit they take, it\u2019s clear they serve a critical role in helping the Government do its job.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many of these private contractors,\u00a0Palantir’s role is controversial.\u00a0The company has contracted with ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.\u00a0\u00a0Their mission is\u00a0to identify and locate undocumented aliens in the United States.\u00a0\u00a0When ICE plans \u201craids\u201d to roundup illegals, it\u2019s\u00a0Palantir that’s providing the data.\u00a0\u00a0 And they not only find the information, they developed programs to help ICE Agents easily track illegals.\u00a0 Now\u00a0there\u2019s an \u201capp\u201d for that: ICE has it installed on their agent\u2019s phones (WNYC Report<\/a>.) It’s required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Company founders Thiel and Lonsdale are proud of their government work. And now they have tried to \u201cturn the tables\u201d on the competition.\u00a0\u00a0Thiel claims that competitor Google is \u201cunpatriotic\u201d by refusing to do AI (artificial intelligence) work for the US government.\u00a0\u00a0Thiel goes even farther, claiming that since\u00a0Google is doing AI research in China they are actually helping China against the US. In Thiel\u2019s words,\u00a0Google is \u201c\u2026engaged in a seemingly treasonous decision to work with the Chinese military.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Wide Web<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It is the dilemma of a worldwide Internet economy.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies like\u00a0Google and\u00a0Facebook have worldwide impact.\u00a0\u00a0Facebook, with 2.38 billion users, reaches almost one third of the entire world.\u00a0\u00a0Google\u00a0is close behind with 2 billion.\u00a0\u00a0The difficulty is\u00a0in working across borders with different legal and ethical standards.\u00a0\u00a0For example ,\u00a0Google\u2019s flagship product,\u00a0Google Search, is not allowed in China.\u00a0\u00a0For\u00a0Google\u00a0to market in China, it has to censor search results to satisfy the Chinese government.\u00a0\u00a0 Google suspended the \u201cDragonfly Project<\/a>,\u201d a search engine designed to meet those Chinese demands, but the temptation and profit motive remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working across national boundaries isn\u2019t new.\u00a0\u00a0General Motors,\u00a0Nike, and\u00a0Apple have learned to deal with differing regulations and governments.\u00a0\u00a0But cars, shoes and even computer parts don\u2019t have the same intelligence impact as data.\u00a0\u00a0With the worldwide availability of meta-data, there is no guarantee that governments won\u2019t use access to further their national goals.\u00a0\u00a0And private companies are influencing nations as well:\u00a0\u00a0Cambridge Analytica’s critical impact on the Brexit vote and the Presidential election in 2016 is just one company’s example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Rules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Protestors have targeted many US companies for cooperating with ICE.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Some, like Marriott and\u00a0Choice Hotels, chose to prevent ICE from using their hotels.\u00a0\u00a0Several airlines refuse to fly separated children.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Palantir\u00a0is facing public pressure with\u00a0protests<\/a> outside their Palo Alto offices.\u00a0In addition, \u00a0Amazon employees are pressuring their management to cut ties with\u00a0Palantir, demanding an end to Cloud and Web services.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power of \u201cdata\u201d has infiltrated our lives.\u00a0\u00a0Google, Facebook, Amazon and dozens of other companies we don’t know; track our likes and dislikes, from products, to food, to politics.\u00a0\u00a0There is no one \u201cfile\u201d on us, but there are millions of bits of data that can all be sorted, correlated, and analyzed to reach conclusions. What we do and where we are; what we need, want, and believe are all available and up for sale.\u00a0Palantir\u00a0sells their information to the US Government.\u00a0\u00a0Facebook\u00a0<\/em>sold their’s to\u00a0Cambridge Analytica.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just because something can be done, doesn’t mean we should do it.  As a nation, we need to determine how much we should regulate the use of our information.  Today, the technology has far outdistanced the rules, norms and ethics.  Nothing seems to govern this multi-national information bonanza.  No one has decided what is patriotic or treasonous, right or wrong.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
