{"id":1914,"date":"2019-06-24T08:31:32","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T12:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=1914"},"modified":"2019-06-24T08:31:37","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T12:31:37","slug":"madman-across-the-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2019\/06\/24\/madman-across-the-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Madman Across the Water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Here\u2019s Sir Elton himself from 1971 \u2013&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B8_xkuGbPhY\"><em>Madman Across the Water<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Madman across the water<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost two years ago, President Trump invoked Elton John songs by calling North Korea\u2019s leader Kim \u201c<em>Rocket Man<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0At the time, I wrote an essay on <em>Trump World <\/em> about the events around the North Korean crisis, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2017\/09\/19\/goodbye-yellow-brick-road\/\"><em>Goodbye Yellow Brick Road<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0To give Mr. Trump some credit, North Korea hasn\u2019t tested nuclear weapons since his \u201cfire and fury\u201d threat.\u00a0\u00a0However, after two summits there isn\u2019t a hint of an agreement, and threats to the contrary, the United States is maintaining the policy of Clinton, Bush, and Obama.\u00a0The US continues actions to keep North Korea in check by using China\u2019s influence and US led economic sanctions, and pushes off any solution to the next Presidency.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s worked so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">captain fantastic or the brown dirt cowboy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To expand our Elton John analogy, President Trump is governing with the&nbsp;<em>Madman Across the Water&nbsp;<\/em>theory.&nbsp;&nbsp;In just the past few weeks, he threatened to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Launch an attack on Iran, bombs almost on the way, then stopped it;<\/li><li>Roundup millions of undocumented aliens in the US and deport them, postponed the raids;<\/li><li>Levy a tariff on Mexico unless they stopped migrants, then dropped it;<\/li><li>accept campaign aid from foreign nations, including Russia, and then said he might call the FBI if it happened.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Trump threatens, blusters, and scares Americans and the rest of&nbsp;&nbsp;the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;Foreign leaders don\u2019t know what to think, even after the State Department quietly tells them to ignore the noise.&nbsp;&nbsp;Americans hear the same advice from Republican politicians, \u201cdon\u2019t worry about what the President says; watch what he does.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Kingdom and other allies are afraid to share intelligence information with the US because they don\u2019t trust Trump. Seemingly, neither do the American intelligence agencies. They\u2019ve prepared attacks on Russian network infrastructure without briefing the President, afraid that he would cancel the preparations, or tell the Russians.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States did respond to Iran\u2019s attack on a drone.&nbsp;&nbsp;While there are few details available, US Cyber Command launched a serious attack on the Iranian network infrastructure, certainly a more proportional response than a bombing raid on the Iranian mainland.&nbsp;&nbsp;Attack US unmanned aircraft, and the response is to disrupt your computer networks; an \u201ceye for an eye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Trump backs off, John Bolton, the President\u2019s National Security Advisor, continues as the \u201c<em>Madman\u201d<\/em>proxy. Bolton continues to rattle his \u201csaber,\u201d threatening military action.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s a madman battle to the maddest.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I&#8217;m still standing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Threaten bombing and killing, then disrupt computer networks.\u00a0\u00a0Allies worry about Presidential security, then a US operation against Russia is leaked in the\u00a0<em>New York Times.\u00a0<\/em>Threaten Mexican and American citizens with a debilitating tariff, then claim victory for a deal already made before the threats.\u00a0\u00a0Keep everyone, friend and foe, off-balance and worried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are serious problems with\u00a0<em>Madman\u00a0<\/em>diplomacy, ones that the United States is just now experiencing.\u00a0\u00a0If Trump is going to be the\u00a0<em>Madman,\u00a0<\/em>sooner of later someone is going to call the bluff:\u00a0\u00a0is he really mad, or just a noisy and arrogant bully, something that  fits Donald Trump&#8217;s entire life?\u00a0\u00a0And the question for all Americans is:\u00a0\u00a0if all of the bluff and bluster turns out to be hot air, what forces will be necessary to achieve American goals?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">funeral for a friend<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the past ninety years of American Presidents, Mr. Trump shows no interest in developing coalitions.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Allies of World War II; Truman\u2019s grand plan of treaties with NATO, CENTO, and SEATO;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bush 41\u2019s coalition to fight the Persian Gulf War; Bush 43\u2019s coalition in Afghanistan; Obama\u2019s signatories for the Iran Nuclear Deal:&nbsp;&nbsp;every President has determined that we need friends in the world to achieve our goals.&nbsp;&nbsp;Every President that is, except Donald Trump.&nbsp;&nbsp;His decision is that we are better in \u201cone on one\u201d situations, when our military and economic power \u201cwins\u201d every time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the Trump Doctrine; multi-lateral treaties and actions are out, bi-lateral interactions are in.\u00a0The problem is, when the bluff is called, it will it be only American soldiers sent to fight, and only Americans bearing the burdens.\u00a0\u00a0In the current confrontation with Iran, our transactional partners, Israel and Saudi Arabia, are happy that the United States is  rebalancing the Middle East in their favor.\u00a0\u00a0While they will likely allow their bases to be used as staging grounds, and the Saudis will kick-in a few billion petro dollars, it will be Americans who fight and die in an armed conflict with Iran.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I guess that&#8217;s why they call it the blues<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States President has insulted our allies and complimented our enemies.\u00a0\u00a0We have bullied Mexico and Canada, and taken sides in the internal actions of the European Union.\u00a0\u00a0Under the current administration, to be a friend of the United States is to be threatened and harassed, under the guise, as Mr. Trump would say, of being\u00a0\u201chonest with our friends.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh, but to be an enemy.\u00a0North Korea\u2019s Kim, treated with the upmost respect despite being a murderous dictator.\u00a0\u00a0Vladimir Putin is believed over our own intelligence agencies.\u00a0President Xi of China is wined and dined; no word spoken of the anniversary of Tiananmen Square.\u00a0\u00a0The only \u201cbad guys:\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and of course, Angela Merckel and John McCain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<em>Madman Theory\u00a0<\/em>is a short-term, transactional kind of solution.\u00a0It doesn\u2019t build an architecture of world interaction, it instead responds to each crisis as \u201cstand alone.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Just because a nation is \u201cour friend\u201d today, doesn\u2019t mean anything for tomorrow.\u00a0\u00a0We all know those kinds of folks, at work or in society.\u00a0\u00a0We know there is no loyalty, no trust to be found;
