{"id":1902,"date":"2019-06-23T09:10:43","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T13:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=1902"},"modified":"2019-06-23T09:10:50","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T13:10:50","slug":"failing-the-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2019\/06\/23\/failing-the-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Failing the Test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Failing the Test<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Education &#8211; Part 3 &#8211; In every political campaign (at least the good ones) there is a \u201cbook,\u201d outlining the issues the candidate will face, and the arguments and positions the candidate takes.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is so everyone on the campaign is literally on \u201cthe same page\u201d when it comes to that issue.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m not running for office, but over the next several weeks, I will be presenting a series of issues for my \u201cbriefing book.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failing the test<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I was the Dean of Students at our local high school, one of the worst parts of my job was attending parent\/teacher meetings where staff talked about the behavior problems of kids.&nbsp;&nbsp;It wasn\u2019t because of the kids actions; the hard part was listening to my colleagues use \u201ceducationese\u201d to the parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;They talked about \u201cbehavioral norms\u201d and \u201clearning objectives\u201d and \u201cpeer interactions.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Many parents didn\u2019t get it:&nbsp;&nbsp;I considered it my job to translate those terms into \u201cregular English\u201d for them, and their kids. The \u201ceducators,\u201d intentionally or not, were talking over their heads, and parents and kids rightfully resented it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standardized testing \u2013 giving students multiple commercially produced tests \u2013 creates an entire world of \u201ceducationese\u201d for parents and students.&nbsp;&nbsp;It sounds complicated, important, and seems to be of enormous value.&nbsp;Kids, parents, and teachers are threatened by the impact of results, and are left mystified about what they really mean.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American educational leaders and politicians have made standardized testing more important than grades,&nbsp;&nbsp;individual teacher evaluation, and student potential and progress.&nbsp;&nbsp;We have turned over those decisions to commercial test creators, with a vested interest in making \u201ctheir tests\u201d important.&nbsp;&nbsp;With all of that power, the tests better be meaningful.&nbsp;The problem:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;they aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">the Cost<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2012, the estimated cost for standardized testing in US public schools was $1.7 Billion (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2012\/11\/29\/13testcosts.h32.html\">Education Week<\/a>.) Seven years later that cost is likely to have grown, but, frankly, it is still a very small percentage of the overall costs in public education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More significantly, standardized tests cost time.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many school districts spend twelve days or more on tests a year, that\u2019s over two weeks of time in a thirty-six week school year.&nbsp;&nbsp;When the costs of teachers administrating the tests and building operational costs are added in, the price goes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not about the money.&nbsp;&nbsp;The question is:&nbsp;&nbsp;does the \u201ctheory\u201d of standardized testing actually work?&nbsp;&nbsp;It goes like this:&nbsp; take a vast number of students, and give them identical tests to try to develop a \u201cscientific metric\u201d (meaning numbers) evaluating what they know, where they rate among their peers, and their ranking against \u201chistoric\u201d scores from the past.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s a statistician\u2019s dream:&nbsp;&nbsp;percentiles, rankings, base numbers, fractional growth coefficients, and the \u201cdreaded\u201d annual yearly progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">figures lie<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is nothing more convincing than numbers on paper.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cThe Results\u201d carry a weight of truth that\u2019s difficult to argue.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s right here in the scores,\u201d an administrator can say, \u201cyou don\u2019t have any \u2018facts\u2019 to argue against them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My first principal, a powerful old-school educator from Alabama, had a favorite phrase:&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cfigures lie, and liars figure.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good friend of mine, a successful businessman, responding to one of my essays on education by saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe problem was never a need for quantitatively more education. It was misguided education.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>He added: \u201c<em>They (students) need to learn how to work as part of a team. They need to learn how to solve complex problems involving customers. Today\u2019s curriculums teach too much unneeded stuff. \u2018Facts\u2019 that can be conjured up on Google need not be taught.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of these men are right, and have put their finger directly on the problem of basing \u201csuccess or failure\u201d in education on standardized tests.&nbsp;Standardized tests require \u201cobjectifying\u201d all problems into multiple-choice answers.&nbsp;&nbsp;What my business friend demands is that students learn how to work together on complex problems, involving interactions with others.&nbsp;That\u2019s not a problem that can be broken down into an \u201cobjectified\u201d single answer, an \u201cA,B, C or D\u201d choice.&nbsp;&nbsp;It demonstrates how this kind of testing misses the target.&nbsp;&nbsp;Instead of learning skills for real world outcomes, students are tested for objective and usually rote, knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">the gospel of numbers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once those results are \u201ccertified,\u201d they become gospel.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are used to promote students, evaluate teachers, and determine how funding for schools is apportioned.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition, they can even determine the physical control of the school district.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Ohio, a District that fails to meet the \u201cstandards\u201d on a long-term basis can have their leadership removed, their governance taken from the community and given to the the state, and their teacher contracts voided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cfigures aren\u2019t lying.\u201d It\u2019s worse than that.\u00a0\u00a0The figures tell us information that isn\u2019t relevant to what schools should be doing.\u00a0\u00a0Look, I was a track coach for forty years.\u00a0\u00a0If I had a runner who practiced really hard, but was unable to improve on their competitive performance, I failed.\u00a0\u00a0It didn\u2019t matter if the practices were \u201csuccessful;\u201d in track it\u2019s about the race.\u00a0\u00a0I needed to change the workout plan; to find a way for that athlete to succeed in the one place that mattered, competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools are working incredibly hard at testing; they are producing great test takers, and encouraging great teachers of tests.&nbsp;&nbsp;What they are failing to do is produce the workers my business friend needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are \u201csuccessful\u201d in practice, but losing the race.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">changing the focus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s time to end the focus on standardized test, and give students the learning and cooperative skills they need in the \u201creal world.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;It doesn\u2019t mean the end of tests (though ending most standardized testing would be great), but it should mean ending US education\u2019s focus on this irrelevant outcome.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Do that, and let great teachers do what they do best: leading, encouraging, problem solving, and finding ways for kids to succeed.&nbsp;&nbsp;We should stop worrying about the \u201cnumbers\u201d and look at the broader success of student achievement.&nbsp;&nbsp;We need to give them what they really need to win their race.&nbsp;&nbsp;Success on a test isn\u2019t it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Failing the Test Education &#8211;
