class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Billionaire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Musical Selection \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MPoN-FNB2V8\">Millionaire<\/a> by Chris Stapleton<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an arrogance that comes with being a \u201cbillionaire.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0There has to be; they\u2019ve been successful at the game that everyone has to play,\u00a0the game of making a living.\u00a0\u00a0They are clearly the winners:\u00a0\u00a0political folks like Mike Bloomberg and Howard Schultz, but also the gentle Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.\u00a0\u00a0Some like Gates, Zuckerberg and Musk, found a way to \u201cbuild a better mousetrap;\u201d they used their genius to ride their creations to wealth.\u00a0\u00a0Others, like Buffet and Bloomberg; were better than others at manipulating the financial system, building their own wealth as reward for creating wealth for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s an arrogance that comes from not having to worry about any kind of basic needs.\u00a0\u00a0To just go through a million dollars a month, it requires spending $33,000 a day.\u00a0\u00a0And that\u2019s only twelve million a year, only a 1.2% of a billion.\u00a0\u00a0To say that someone with that kind of financial capacity is \u201cin touch\u201d with the cost of health care, mortgages, retirement or the price of bread at Krogers, is hard to imagine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Howard Schultz made his money in Starbucks.&nbsp;&nbsp;He has a great \u201crags to riches\u201d story, and says \u201che understands\u201d the American people.&nbsp;But of course, he understands not what the American people need, but what he sees from the high altitude of his billions in wealth.&nbsp;&nbsp;He claims to see \u201cthe big picture\u201d that \u201caverage\u201d Americans can\u2019t possibly understand.&nbsp;He thinks we need \u201cserious people\u201d to sit around the table to solve American problems.&nbsp;&nbsp;That doesn\u2019t seem to include average Americans, because he does not feel the reality of living in an America where the disparity of wealth is so great, that one percent of the population controls forty percent of the wealth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also arrogance grown from the immensity of their financial success.\u00a0\u00a0From their achievement comes the attitude that they can do anything, including running the country.\u00a0\u00a0President Trump is simply the most unvarnished example of this, whether he is a real billionaire or not.\u00a0\u00a0And there is, among almost all of them, a dedication to the system that providing them with success, a no-holds-bar belief in unbridled capitalism.\u00a0\u00a0It worked for them, so it should work for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not a socialist, or a communist; but I do believe that our nation has an obligation to those whose labor creates our wealth, as well as to those who own it.\u00a0\u00a0And more than that, I do not believe that there is a quid-pro-quo; an economic bargain saying you labor and maybe you will get what you need.\u00a0We as a nation should be better than that:\u00a0\u00a0food, shelter, education, healthcare; all should be inherent entitlements of being in America, and not gained as a reward for labors performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of the excesses of the past two years, the United States still has the potential for being the greatest example of a nation in world history.\u00a0\u00a0We have the greatest amount of wealth available to benefit our people, and we already have near the highest standard of living.\u00a0\u00a0What the United States needs to do is recognize the obligation we have to ALL of the people in our country.\u00a0\u00a0This is not a matter of scarcity of wealth, it is a matter of wealth distribution.\u00a0\u00a0And as soon as that term comes out, redistributing wealth, the hue and cry against socialism (or communism) rises, particular from those with the biggest megaphone:\u00a0\u00a0the most wealthy.\u00a0\u00a0Well of course they don\u2019t want their income redistributed, they have the most to lose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t say it can\u2019t be done, or that it would make us a<em> SOCIALIST COUNTRY<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Two years ago, when the Trump era began, I wrote an essay about some Americans longing for the simplicity of the 1950\u2019s, the era of the television show \u201c<em>Leave it to Beaver\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2017\/02\/28\/trump-world-and-the-beaver\/\">Trump World and the Beaver<\/a>.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>In that \u201cblack and white\u201d time the tax rates on the most wealthy was over 90%\u00a0<em>(the tax charged on income OVER $200,000, the first $200,000 was taxed at lower rates.)\u00a0<\/em>Today the equivalent income is over $2 million, and the tax rate is 37%.\u00a0\u00a0We were doing it in the era of Elvis and Eisenhower; why not now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Billionaires don\u2019t represent the interests or experiences of most Americans.\u00a0\u00a0And success in creating wealth doesn\u2019t equate to success in running government (we should know that now more than ever.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What billionaires do have is access to our communication system:\u00a0\u00a0they can buy the biggest megaphones to deliver their message.\u00a0\u00a0It doesn\u2019t make them qualified to govern, nor does their experience help them understand the concerns of most Americans.\u00a0\u00a0They are good at making money, so, as the saying goes;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cDo what you know best; if you\u2019re a runner, run, if you\u2019re a bell, ring.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ignaz Bernstein
