{"id":1454,"date":"2019-01-07T07:40:35","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T12:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/?p=1454"},"modified":"2019-01-07T07:40:42","modified_gmt":"2019-01-07T12:40:42","slug":"speaking-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dahlman.online\/index.php\/2019\/01\/07\/speaking-english\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaking English"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/video\/l\/beto-orourke-slams-trumps-border-wall-in-tweeted-video\/vp-BBRxKa6\">Beta O&#8217;Rourke&#8217;s Video on the Border Wall<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WySzEXKUSZw\">In&nbsp;the&nbsp;Room&nbsp;Where&nbsp;It&nbsp;Happens&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;Hamilton<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking English<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing essays for \u201cTrump World\u201d has given me the opportunity to get in lots of conversations about our times.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some have been face to face, some have been through comments directly to the \u201cTrump World\u201d site, and some have been on social media.  Last week I was in an extended discussion with a pro-Trump friend about \u201cWALL.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I came into the discussion with a pre-conceived of what a \u201cwall\u201d was.\u00a0\u00a0To fall back on my Mom&#8217;s British upbringing; the Oxford dictionary definition of a wall is, \u201c<em>A continuous vertical brick or stone structure that encloses or divides an area of land.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0That seemed pretty \u201ccut and dried,\u201d a wall is \u2013 a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our current polarized world it is difficult to have discussions.&nbsp;We often don\u2019t share the same facts, or communicate using the same terms.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s hard to discuss when you don\u2019t understand each other; that incomprehension contributes to the divisions in our society.&nbsp;&nbsp;The feeling often is, \u201cI don\u2019t understand you \u2013 so you must be stupid,\u201d or words to that effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, arguing about the definition of \u201ca wall\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0Is that what our political discussion has come to?\u00a0  Maybe the problem isn\u2019t in defining a \u201cwall,\u201d but in reading and listening more closely.\u00a0\u00a0Maybe \u201cWALL\u201d is different than a \u201cwall,\u201d at least as my Trumpian friends define it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know, this all sounds like nonsense, but this may be the basis for a win-win deal to re-open the government.&nbsp;&nbsp;Regardless of what many Trump supporters say, Democrats are in favor of trying to solve the problems on our Southern border.&nbsp;&nbsp;Democrats believe in a more humane and comprehensive solution, dealing with both migrants that are at the border now, and the conditions in Central America that are causing the migrations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Democrats are not \u201cin favor\u201d of illegal immigration and are willing to strengthen our position on the Southern border.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Democrats are NOT willing to see the \u201cGreat Wall of Trump\u201d built from the Gulf to the Pacific.\u00a0\u00a0It not only represents a huge waste of money in a low-tech, outdated mode of border control, completely deferrable by ladder or tunnel; but it also embodies a racist view of Hispanics, who must be &#8220;walled out.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I listen to the Republicans, they are beginning to change their definition of a wall to \u201cWALL.\u201d\u00a0Already the President has left his construction world of concrete and re-bar, and moved to a steel-slat barrier, something that I define as a fence.\u00a0\u00a0His statement is that the \u201cWALL fence&#8221; would serve the same purpose as a true wall, and would allow the Border Patrol to see through to what\u2019s happening on the other side.\u00a0\u00a0And today, the President\u2019s new Chief of Staff, Mick Mulvaney, acknowledged that \u201cWALL\u201d would be used where appropriate, not as a continuous barrier from Gulf to Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jared Kushner and Senator Lindsey Graham have both suggested that a deal could include solving the DACA situation, with a permanent law replacing the current Obama executive order that\u2019s being challenged in court.&nbsp;&nbsp;Over a year ago, Democrats were willing to take an \u201cactual wall\u201d for $25 Billion to get  comprehensive immigration reform, maybe there\u2019s room for less on each side now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So is all of this about semantics, about the definition of \u201cWALL?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;If the President was willing to accept $2.6 Billion for \u201cimprovements\u201d including steel-slat fence, electronic surveillance and detection on the border, in exchange for a limited DACA deal and changes on how migrants are handled, is that enough \u201cWALL\u201d to re-open the government?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President has to have \u201cWALL.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;As Lindsey Graham said, it\u2019s what Trump has staked his Presidency on.&nbsp;&nbsp;Democrats cannot allow a \u201cwall,\u201d they staked their election victory of 2018 on stopping it.&nbsp;&nbsp;The entire left wing of the Democratic Party would be betrayed by a \u201cwall.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we will each have our own version of the deal.&nbsp;&nbsp;To Democrats, there will be border security enhancements, legalization of DACA, and improved treatments of migrants at the border.&nbsp;&nbsp;To Republicans, there will be \u201cWALL\u201d, even though it\u2019s a steel fence, only going in certain places.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both sides will get something, neither side will get everything:&nbsp;&nbsp;it\u2019s \u201c\u2026how the sausage is made;\u201d a compromise to open the government.&nbsp;&nbsp;And we will all be speaking our own version of English.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beta O&#8217;Rourke&#8217;s Video on the Border Wall In&nbsp;the&nbsp;Room&nbsp;Where&nbsp;It&nbsp;Happens&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;Hamilton Speaking English Writing essays for \u201cTrump World\u201d has given me the opportunity to get in lots of conversations about our times.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some have been face to face, some have been through comments directly to the \u201cTrump World\u201d site, and some have been on social media.
