Good Morning<\/p>\n

I spent forty years as a high school track coach.\u00a0 I loved the competition, the intense effort my kids would make to support their team.\u00a0Improvement was good, winning was even better, and the camaraderie of our team was everything.<\/p>\n

One of my favorite times as a coach, was early in the morning at a meet before the competition began.\u00a0The track was calm, the kids slowly waking up and warming up.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t the intensity yet, just the ritual of getting ready.\u00a0 We were relaxed, prepared, and confident in what we could do.\u00a0It was the \u201ccalm\u201d time, before the cheering and the clapping, when everything was possible.<\/p>\n

Everything was possible.\u00a0The highs and lows of seventeen events, from shot put to pole vault to two mile, to the final 4×400 relay; were yet to occur.\u00a0 All of the work and planning; the \u201cblood, sweat and tears\u201d of Churchillian fame, was done.\u00a0 It was the cusp of change:\u00a0 everything would be different when it was over.<\/p>\n

It was the same in my \u201cprevious life\u201d as a political campaigner on the dawn of Election Day.\u00a0Whatever the polling and the \u201ctalking heads\u201d on television had said; it was the day of decision.\u00a0 Everything was still possible.\u00a0 Ronald Reagan\u2019s 1984 campaign did a great commercial:\u00a0 \u201cIt’s Morning Again in America<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 It captured the essential concept of morning, and Reagan, as a new beginning (it also was turned into a great Folger\u2019s Coffee commercial theme.)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Election Day morning in America again, and everything is possible.<\/p>\n

Folks are lining up at their polling places: \u00a0they are making up their minds.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know what the collective mind of America will decide this day, but they definitely have three choices.\u00a0 America can choose the minority view that gained control two years ago, where, that day, our entire world was \u201cturned upside down.\u201d\u00a0 Or, America might show its confusion, and send mixed messages to itself and the world.\u00a0 The split that exists in America might be further exposed, raw and bleeding, waiting for salve, but instead scoured even more.<\/p>\n

Or Americans might do what they have been doing in almost every special election since 2016:\u00a0reject the polarization and crassness of the Trump Presidency, and choose a different path.\u00a0 It happened in Alabama, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, and almost in Georgia and Ohio.\u00a0 It may happen today, and we will wake up tomorrow to a different \u201cMorning in America.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I sit in our camper in Florida, the hotbed of the \u201csplit\u201d in American life.\u00a0 Like the beginning of that track meet, everything is possible. \u00a0However it all turns out tonight (and onto tomorrow, as counting may take more than just a few hours) today is one of the times I am proudest to be American.\u00a0 We will all decide today, with more and more Americans taking part in determining their future.\u00a0 It is the essence of what our country, a Constitutional Republic, founded in the compromises of the eighteenth century and forged in the blood and labor of history, is about.<\/p>\n
