The cast of Hamilton sings for voters to show up on Tuesday<\/a><\/em><\/p>\nPolitical campaigning is a process of getting a candidate\u2019s message across.\u00a0 Events often control how that message is delivered, and campaigns often \u201cgo negative\u201d to try to knock down their opponent.\u00a0 Outside groups are particularly willing to do that, and may do it up to the day of the election.<\/p>\n
But for the actual campaign in the last two weeks, there comes a time to make their closing argument; the last concept they want the voters to take into the polling booth with them.\u00a0 Here in Florida, Rick Scott, Republican for Senate, has found his phrase \u2013 \u201clet\u2019s get to work,\u201d to capsulize his candidacy.\u00a0 It works.\u00a0His Democratic opponent, Bill Nelson, has a \u201cmuddier\u201d closer, something like \u201c…I\u2019ll work for Florida, not for Trump.\u201d\u00a0 We will see how that turns out.<\/p>\n
So what should be the \u201cclosing argument\u201d for the national Democratic Party in 2018?<\/p>\n
President Franklin Roosevelt has the answer, from his inaugural address in 1933.\u00a0 It was the depths of the Great Depression, unemployment was over 20%, and many Americans felt there were no answers in our Democracy.<\/p>\n
So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself\u2014nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days<\/em>.<\/p>\n\u201c\u2026Fear\u2026unreasoning, unjustified terror\u2026\u201d<\/em>has been used to pursue the Republican political agenda.\u00a0 Fear: of brown people massing at the border, of the shooter in the school and the church, of gays and minorities and all those who are \u201cdifferent.\u201d\u00a0 A \u201cTrumpian\u201d friend described it as trying to stay \u201csmall,\u201d not become a target.\u00a0 Stay in your home, don\u2019t go \u201cdowntown\u201d where \u201cthings are different.\u201d Keep your door locked, and your gun loaded.<\/p>\nThe Republican closing argument, made by the President with OUR aircraft, Air Force One in the background, is Fear. \u00a0Democrats represent \u201cmob rule\u201d by \u201cAntifa\u201d anarchists, 6000 MS-13 gangsters are headed here in the caravan; we need to send the Army to the border, we need to load our AR-15\u2019s.\u00a0 And if the media calls him on \u201ctruth,\u201d it\u2019s \u201cfake news.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t believe what you see or hear in the media, believe what I tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barack Obama is trying to counter the argument with \u201chope.\u201d\u00a0 Hope is working together to find solutions to problems rather than quivering behind closed doors.\u00a0 And while neither Trump nor Obama is on the ballot tomorrow, Democrats throughout the country are closing with by saying Democrats can solve problems.<\/p>\n
Democrats don’t need to be afraid, they can \u201cget the job done.\u201d They can protect health care, protect the environment, protect social security and Medicare.\u00a0 And they can do it without the \u201cfear mongering\u201d and hatred that the \u201cTrump Circus\u201d requires.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the Democrats\u2019 closer: \u00a0don’t fear, work together to get the job done.<\/p>\n
In his inaugural, Roosevelt called on the historical belief that in crisis, Americans would give their leaders the \u201c\u2026understanding and support\u2026which is essential to victory<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Democrats don\u2019t need fear to gain support:\u00a0 they need sleeves rolled up, sweat on the brow, get to work Americans to turn from fear and solve problems.<\/p>\nIn the election tomorrow the choice is stark:\u00a0 fear or future.\u00a0 Democrats cannot be \u201cparalyzed be fear\u201d and trepidation of what the results might show.\u00a0Unlike 2016, they need to boldly go out and vote: and if they do \u2013 they will \u201cget the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n
